An informative and often amusing imagining of the lives of mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss and scientist Alexander von Humboldt.

With this 4th and final book for the #AwesomeAugust readathon, I met all my stated goals! Thanks to @Andrew65 for hosting!

Metaliterary moment #2 when Humboldt remonstrated with his biographer —and author of the book he currently stars in— about not dedicating enough time to his year in Mexico in her previous book about him. #Metaliterature

Metaliterary moment #1 when narrator Alexander Van Humboldt refers to the illustrator of the book that he stars in #Metaliterature

BookBabe Ha, neat! 😄 5y
pdever Breaking the fourth wall... I always like when it happens. There's a great example from cartoons in the Chuck Jones classic Duck Amuck. 5y
Lindy I love it when this happens too. 5y

So a little bit of chilling time in between sight seeing! My friend recommended this one a while ago, saw it in the bookshop yesterday and figured since the author has lived here it would be fitting to get it now. Shame I am way slower at reading in German though!

Mehso-so

This book started off well, but as the book progressed it began to feel a bit disjointed and a sequence of separate incidents within each chapter rather than a sequential progressive storyline. In fact it started to feel a bit like a non-fiction book in a fiction format. Not sorry I read it as there were some interesting points in it but feel it could have been so much better. Interesting that it is on the 1001 books to read before you die list.

LeahBergen Hmm... thanks for the update. 👍🏻 6y
Cathythoughts 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻thanks for the tag. Interesting review. 6y

Fancied something a bit different so listening to this book which centres around tow famous Germans, the naturalist and explorer Alexander van Rumboldt and the genius mathematician and Physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss. Enjoying it so far.

TrishB Interesting I will await your review 👍🏻 I‘ve a book about a Himalayan climb today so we were obviously looking for something different. Enjoy your weekend now it‘s here 😁 (edited) 6y
Cathythoughts Thankyou for the tag , I will investigate 👍🏻 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 I read that book. It‘s on the 1001 book list. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I saw your review on Goodreads But didn‘t know it was on the 1001 books list. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I liked it. Hope u enjoy it! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m enjoying it so far. Gauss was quite remarkable! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I was impressed by the scientists. I think one is a mathematician. (edited) 6y
LeahBergen Oh, this sounds good! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes Gauss was a famous mathematician. 6y
Andrew65 @LeahBergen Enjoyable so far. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m up early to watch the wedding! Are you watching it today? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB No not really interested in the wedding, not even sure what time it is. Aim to hit the seaside on a nice Sunny day. Hopefully be quiet with a number of people watching the wedding or the big Football (Soccer) FA Cup Final. They certainly couldn‘t have got better weather for the wedding. The Royal Family and the Government annoyed a lot of British people as haven‘t even given a day‘s Bank Holiday and scheduling it the same day as FA Cup. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Oh my! Probably more Americans are watching then today! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I think a large number of people will still watch but can foresee family arguments where not to be sexist, but many men want to watch the football and many women want to watch the wedding. Can see pubs showing the football being busy! Think last Royal Wedding I watched was Princess Anne in 1974. Don‘t think I remember watching Charles and Diana. Very interested in Royal Family in past but not much interest in today‘s Royal Family. 6y
Andrew65 That said think William and Kate are the saving grace of the Royal Family, along with Prince Harry following the damage done by the relationship of Charles and Diana. Not sure Charles is that popular as a result. @EadieB Even I admire the ‘lovely Kate‘ and the way she relates to everyone. Now she is extremely popular. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I like that Harry‘s wedding is so small and personal without politicians and important people. Kate and Will‘s children will probably steal the show. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB This is another example of how both William and Harry are resurrecting the Royal Family following the dark days and the ‘annus horribilis‘ following incidents around Charles and Diana. They both do a good job of speaking to the everyday people in the country. If this hadn‘t changed I felt the %Royal Family‘s Days were numbered. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 i think the turning point was when the Queen finally gave her speech acknowledging the loss of Diana. They were horrible and embarrassing years! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I don‘t buy it but still conspiracy theories out there about Diana‘s death. I must admit the Royal Family lost me at that point. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I believe she was gotten rid of too. Prince Philip really did not like her too much and I would say he might have been behind her death. The American reporters were asking some of the Brits “how old is Big Ben” which is a question on the citizenship test and nobody knew the answer just like the Americans who didn‘t know American history when questioned. So funny! (edited) 6y

I- not being particularly good in Maths or in love with Science- enjoyed this book about the two geniuses Humboldt and Gauß very much. Both attempted to measure and explore the world in their very own, distinctive ways and left a tremendous mark on scientific standard and progress nowadays. If you want to loose yourself in a simply- but also beautifully told story, go and check out this book, which made Kehlmann famous in 2005.
