The Children on the Hill | Jennifer McMahon

Pickpick

Vermont 1978: Dr. Helen Hildreth, psychiatrist, is acclaimed for her work with mentally ill at her renowned treatment center. At home, she is just Gran when taking care of Vi & Eric, her grandchildren. One day Gran brings home a child to stay with the family but Iris does not behave like a normal girl. Vi & Eric invite Iris to join their Monster Club. They catalogue all kinds of monsters & makeup ways to defeat them. Iris comes out of her shell.

EadieB 2019: Lizzy Shelley is the host of the popular podcast, Monsters Among Us. A young girl has been abducted. A monster has been sighted in the town. Lizzy is determined to hunt the monster down. Lizzy knows better than anyone that monsters are real because one of them is her very own sister. 2y
EadieB This is a story about monsters. I enjoyed the references to Mary Shelly's Frankenstein novel. The characters were unique and the plot has a very surprising twist in the end. The story is told in two timelines (1978 Vi and 2019 Lizzie). I have read all of Jennifer McMahon's books and have enjoyed each one. I look forward to reading her next book as I do enjoy her writing. 2y
EadieB If you like monster stories then you will enjoy this one. I would like to thank Gallery/Scott Press and NetGalley for a ebook for an honest review. (edited) 2y

I have read all of Jennifer's books & have enjoyed them all. This one is a chilling story about a woman who returns to the old family home after her sister mysteriously drowns in its swimming pool. Lexie, Jax‘s sister, has been out of touch with reality. Jax arrives at her grandmother's house & learns that Lexie was researching the history of their family & the property. Jax discovers that the land holds a far darker past than she imagined.

EadieB In 1929, a natural spring is showcased by the newest and most modern hotel in the Northeast which eventually becomes the pool on the grandmother's property. The story switches back and forth from 1929 to the present. It is a modern-day ghost story that illuminates how the past certainly has an influence on the present day. I found the characters to be unique and quite interesting. 3y
EadieB The story did not disappoint and I do look forward to Jennifer's next book. I would recommend this book to those who love ghost stories. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Simon and Shuster for a free copy for an honest review. To be published April 6, 2021 3y

Andrew65 This looks great! Yet to read any of her books. Have to correct that in 2021! 😊 3y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think her writing gets better with each book. They are comparing her to Shirley Jackson. 3y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks, I need to start thinking about books I want to read next year. 3y
EadieB @Andrew65 Me too! I have lots of books and series that I need to catch up on. I need to stop getting distracted. 3y
Andrew65 @EadieB NetGalley has led to me adding loads of new series I want to read. Want to get to some of those but prioritise some of the older series too. Need to get back on track with reading, past four months have impacted on it with school being fully open. Also want to get back on track for group reads with the books I can get hold of. Not been to a library in over 9 months. You‘ve had a tricky year with changes to family situation. 3y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes! I can't wait until things settle down and my house gets back to normal too. Sorry to hear that the past 4 months have been so bad for you. This has been the worse year and has really taken a toll on us! 3y

⭐⭐⭐⭐
A great story with tales of Witches and their ghosts! A very easy and fun read, especially for October.

It's spooky but not scary. I feel it would be great as a movie too!

Definitely a thumbs up from me!

Helen and Nate decide to build a home of their dreams. Land was owned by Hattie Breckenridge who was hung as witch in 1900. Slow but picks up in the 2nd half. Surprise conclusion. Well written, atmospheric and chilling, not creepily overdone. The past and present come together in the end. The themes are witches, ghosts, spirits, curses and treasure. I would recommend to those who love paranormal ghost stories. Thanks Doubleday and NetGalley.

Mdargusch Sounds perfect for an October read! 5y

Promise Not to Tell | Jennifer McMahon

#Promises - #TuneIntoNovember - “Kate returns home to care for her sick mother when a young girl is murdered. This crime eerily resembles another from her childhood...More than just a #murder #mystery, this extraordinary #debutnovel written by #JenniferMcMahon, Promise Not to Tell, is a story of #friendship and #family, #devotion and #betrayal—tautly written, deeply insightful, beautifully evocative, and utterly unforgettable.” #TBR

Cinfhen Sounds promising 😉 6y

Jess7 I thought so too. @Cinfhen . @RebelReader I‘ve never read any of her books, but The One You Left Behind has been on my radar for awhile and The Winter People. What book by her is your favorite and which is your least? 6y
