Beautiful Losers | Leonard Cohen

Mehso-so

This book was a challenge! It's filthy, disjointed, confusing & offensive to women. AND occasionally transcendent. It's mostly a pan but by the end I was somewhat won over. Like a tiny tiny bit. I would never tell anyone to read it. BUT it was an experience. 🤷 I won't pretend I understood it. 😂
Thank God he switched to songwriting!!

Graywacke Whoa! What did he do?! 3w
Graywacke Wait… this is a novel, not a memoir? Ok. My question doesn‘t make sense once I realized this. Anyway, still, whoa! (edited) 3w
merelybookish @Graywacke No sex act goes undescribed. 😑 It's rooted in his sacred/profane schtick with a lot a lot a lot of emphasis on the profane. While written on amphetamines. 3w

sarahbarnes Way to go for finishing it. 😆😑 3w

LeahBergen 😆😆 And you haven‘t convinced me to finally read it. 2w
merelybookish @sarahbarnes Yes, I deserve a gold star! Only one in book club who did. 2w
merelybookish @AmyG @dabbe Yesh, it's not great. 2w
merelybookish @LeahBergen Yeah no, listen to one of his albums instead! I would never tell anyone to read this book. 2w
Suet624 I saw a documentary about him and he seemed very cocky and unaware of how he impacted women. It definitely tainted his reputation for me. Yes, a brilliant songwriter, but ... 1w
merelybookish @Suet624 Yeah. I saw him in concert and he was close to 80 and he still oozed sex appeal so can't imagine what he was like in his prime! 1w
kwmg40 I had the same reaction when I'd read this years ago! I still love his music, though, and I too had seen him in concert, and even at an advanced age, he gave a spectacular performance. 1w

Wowowowow WOW. I started this YESTERDAY and wasn‘t able to put it down until today. A gripping tale of Leonard Cohen. His time in Israel, the accepting of his role in life. The song “Lover, Lover, Lover”. All of it just so incredible and compelling. 8/10.

My score is 73/100. As with the previous surveys, some songs are very familiar, and others I‘ve never even heard of the artist. Here‘s the link if you want to take the survey https://bit.ly/46wY0GA

I think I‘m contractually obligated to select as number one a song that has my name as the title so …
1. Suzanne

And also…
2. The Edge of Seventeen
3. Suite Judy Blue Eyes

The view from Crescent Street in Montreal.

Becker That‘s fantastic! 11mo
LiseWorks I took an photo of this once from way up near a church. 11mo
willaful I photographed it from the top of.. I've forgotten the name. Huge hill you can climb up and there's a big vista on top. 11mo

kwmg40 @Becker Thanks! 11mo
kwmg40 @LiseWorks I once viewed this from a tall building too. It's become a landmark in Montreal! 11mo
kwmg40 @willaful Do you mean the top of Mount Royal? I'm a little surprised that it can be seen from there, but then again, it is a VERY large wonderful image of Leonard Cohen! 11mo
LiseWorks I'm pretty sure it was from there. It was far away but I still was able to take a photo of it. @kwmg40 11mo

willaful @kwmg40 That looks like the place. What a hike it was! We were there in Summer 2019. Oh the humidity!

One of my bookish friends (Miss Bates Reads Romance, if anyone knows her blog) took me on the Leonard Cohen tour while I was there, so I saw it more close up as well. But it's pretty cool, albeit small, from the mountain.
11mo
kwmg40 @Octoberwoman Me too! I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. He was gracious and generous to his fans. 11mo
kwmg40 @willaful Yes, Montreal can be very uncomfortable in the summer! I was there last summer when it was covered in smog from the wildfires. But it‘s still a great city to visit anytime. I grew up there and much of my family is still there. 11mo
kwmg40 @willaful I hadn‘t known about the Leonard Cohen tour. Sounds like it would definitely be a worthwhile activity for a Cohen fan! 11mo
willaful @kwmg40 It's just her own personal tour, of places he lived and wrote about. 😁 Very cool for a fan. I saw him in concert once, when I was maybe 9? My mom and aunt were big fans so I grew up loving his music.

Weirdly, I actually kind of enjoyed the humidity. I lived in Manhattan when I was young and I felt at home. My poor daughter was so miserable though! She's never lived anywhere but a mild climate.

11mo
kwmg40 @willaful Nice that your friend shared this tour with you! I'm with your daughter -- I hate the humidity. I now live in Southwestern Ontario, where it's also hot and humid in the summer months. 11mo

#tower #poetrymatters @TheSpineView

Well, my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day in the Tower of Song

I said to Hank Williams, how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
Oh, a hundred floors above me in the Tower of Song

I was born like this, I had no choice

IndoorDame I was born with the gift of a golden voice And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here in the Tower of Song

So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all
I'm standing by the window where the light is strong
Ah, they don't let a woman kill you, not in the Tower of Song
1y
IndoorDame Now, you can say that l've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgment coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these funny voices in the Tower of Song

I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
1y
IndoorDame But I feel so close to everything that we lost We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again

Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back They're moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly from a window in the Tower of Song

I‘m really not vibing with the art style here, and for someone who had such a interesting life both in his life choices and in his inner life, I‘m finding this account of him desperately dry. I actually got way more out of the Netflix documentary I saw on Hallelujah last year. Maybe I‘ll stumble onto a biography I do vibe with at some point, I know there are more out there…

Suet624 That‘s too bad. I liked the doc a lot. 1y
