Beautiful Losers
Beautiful Losers | Leonard Cohen
One of the best-known experimental novels of the 1960s, Beautiful Losers is Cohen s most defiant and uninhibited work. The novel centres upon the hapless members of a love triangle united by their sexual obsessions and by their fascination with Catherine Tekakwitha, the 17th-century Mohawk saint. By turns vulgar, rhapsodic, and viciously witty, Beautiful Losers explores each characters attainment of a state of self-abandonment, in which the sensualist cannot be distinguished from the saint.

Bailedbailed

I promised not to bail. I‘m an ugly loser. Couldn‘t make head nor tail of the first 10% of this, and couldn‘t be bothered to continue.

saresmoore Never promise not to bail, Shawn! 😆 5y
TrishB Absolutely! 5y
Dolly Took me a minute to comprehend “ I‘m an ugly loser” but I found it humorous even when I thought it was plucked out of midair. Wouldn‘t be funny if true. 🤓 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Now why would you make such a promise? 😁 5y

Lots of you fellow Littens knew I was writing and entered a contest. I didn‘t win although I also didn‘t think I would because what the hell do I know about writing a book. I‘m ok with it but have been bitten by the writing bug after having it take a backseat so many years. So I‘m going to fix the weak spots and go from there. Also I started the next 2 in the series so what choice do I have? 😂😂 thanks for all the encouragement Littens!

Tamra Good for you!!! 👍🏾👍🏾 6y

Went to Barnes and Noble with a gift card. Spent more than I planned. Not pictured: the issue of New Republic that the nice clerk who helped me find the Solnit was so exited to recommend that I had to buy too.

Nat_Reads Murakami 😍😍😍😍 7y
Chris @Nat_Reads I'm pretty sure that's one that I saw people here talking about like a year ago and I've been meaning to read since. 7y

Mehso-so

I picked up this book in Autumn from a yard sale, as well as a few others. Started reading it a few days after his death. I also found myself in a hotel bed reading this while a documentary was playing. A Tower of Leonard.

This is the combined 1st person narrative of 2 unlikable guys as they each degenerate into complete madness, featuring indigenous Canadian history, ramblings and a lot of sex between all.

danx This is the combined 1st person narrative of 2 unlikable guys as they each degenerate into complete madness, featuring native Canadian history, a fictional historic character (I think), a trio of lovers, lots of sex between all. I really love his way with words, I liked to say of this book while I was reading it 'he has great paragraphs' which is also not giving it enough credit. 7y
danx

Its a book which drags a fair bit, if I was to do it again I would stop halfway through. It did get me interested in reading some of the native Canadian history mentioned in the book, which at first I wasn't sure would be very historically accurate, some fascinating and brutal history!
7y
danx Wow the character limit sucks! 7y

gentlepet I love Canadian history, do you think I'd like it? What kind of Canadian history? 7y
gentlepet When you say native do you mean it like indigenous cos I am all aboard that train. 7y
danx Ah yes, indigenous. Poor choice of wording. Throughout the book he uses the term 'Indian'. I think you'd enjoy parts of it but I suspect you'd come to a similar point re dragging. Its quite experimental I think. The indigenous history aspects are due to one of the characters being a historian, he mentions certain healing and violent acts which I read up on during the read. Likely many other better reads which deal with these. 7y

So sad this morning to hear about Leonard Cohen passing away. I love his music and his fiction is wonderfully weird... When will this shitty year end!

I cannot handle any more bad news. Losing Leonard Cohen is devastating . I have one of his lyrics tattooed on my arm and the rest deeply embedded in my soul.

I know people are excited about Dylan, but he wouldn't have been my choice. (Especially after reading that profile of Leonard Cohen last night---he's not in good health.) Anyway, here are a few of my picks for the #Nobel.

@Liberty I considered Margaret Atwood, but after a few seconds more thought, it was clear that my favorite Canadian author is the great poet Leonard Cohen.

KVanRead So good! Love this photo. Do you have a favorite Cohen poem? 8y
LatteSue I second this! 8y
MrCoachU Leonard Cohen is the best! 8y

Yossarian @KVanRead "I heard there was a secret chord/ That David played, and it pleased the Lord/ You never really cared for music/ Do you?" 8y
KVanRead @Yossarian ❤️! For me a 3way tie: "As the mist leaves no scar/On the dark green hill," "New York is cold but I like where I'm living/There's music on Clinton St all through the evening," and "There's a crack in everything/It's how the light gets in." 8y
Nibletdad "You go your way/And I'll go your way, too." My favorite thing he's ever written beyond all of the music. :) 8y
Susannah @KVanRead I love "Famous Blue Raincoat." "Evocative" is often used pretentiously, but few lyrics evoke a scene for me like the one you mentioned. 8y
KVanRead @Nibletdad So lovely. 8y
KVanRead @Susannah Completely agree. I read Station 11 last year and she had a character write "Toronto is cold but I like where I'm living"! Loved it. 8y
BibliophileArtichoke By far my very favorite poet. Agreed. 8y
ultrabookgeek I purchased book of longing last year for some reason- now's a good time to dive in. 8y
