Behold the Dreamers | Imbolo Mbue
post image

Jente and Neni are a young Cameroonian couple with kids living illegally in NYC. Jente works as a driver for the very wealthy Mr Edwards, a hotshot at Lehman Brothers. We all know how that ended. It is a sad and loving book about different cultures getting to know eachother but the gap is too big. And year there is a happy ending - sort of. A very enjoyable book, thanks for sharing this one Cindy 💕
And it is so cool to own #BOTM books🤩

I would have loved this novella more if I hadn‘t read it during a sleepless night. Now that I finished it I still feel numb and is does deserve all the feelings! It‘s a very carefully created love story, the words well chosen, the Tuscan scenery vividly described and wonderful dialogues between two people who should be together.
I am glad I read it, like @KarenUK thanks to the mention of it in Writers & Lovers.

Een tragedie in New York | Maurice Seleky

This book is written by a co-worker and I was a bit skeptical (why the NYC setting and the election of Trump?) but beside these two things it is just a good book about millennials with all their chances, their FOMO and Gen Z about to take over - forcing them to finally grow up and take responsibility.

squirrelbrain Phew, that‘s a relief! I always worry about reading books by people I know, in case I don‘t like them. 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I did worry! But it really was a good book. 😅 2y
dylanisreading I am offended on behalf of all millennials. 😂 2y
BarbaraBB @Bianca Oh I‘m sorry I was not trying to be offensive, it is the plot line 😀 2y
Cuilin #outdoorart 👍 sounds like an interesting read. 2y

Set in NYC in the late 19th century this is a fast-paced thriller. A serial killer is on the loose and Chief of Police Theodore Roosevelt (yes, that Roosevelt) assembles a special unit led by an alienist to be able to make a profile of the killer. With psychology, science and traditional police skills for the first time working together, they are getting closer to their killer - step by step.

squirrelbrain I‘m glad you liked it! You really need to concentrate though don‘t you? It‘s very twisty-turny. 2y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I am happy I finally read it, thanks to you! And indeed I needed to really concentrate most of the time! 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m glad you liked it! I read it maybe 15 years ago and loved it, but I don‘t remember any details. 2y

What is it that makes Japanese books so good? Their stillness? The lack of exaggeration? The respect for the plot and its characters? Their weirdness? This one is the fabulous portrait of a world where things disappear and with them, people‘s memories of them. Their hearts grow empty and there seems no way out. Disturbing yet wonderful novel about a world in decay.

Velvetfur I love that beautiful blue of the water in this pic 💙 And yes I agree about the way Japanese novels are written! 3y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Great way to speak about Japanese books. I like to express it by “books that bring me “SOMEWHERE” else” 😉 Thanks for the highlight, I had not come across that one. 📚add for me, because it does read like I will be “transported” 🙏🏻 3y
Hooked_on_books Oh definitely! 🏖 3y
squirrelbrain Great review! I‘ve seen lots of good reviews for this one - stacked. Looks lovely there too! 3y
Chelsea.Poole great photo! 3y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I am now starting one of your recommendations: 3y
MayJasper Yes stillness and weirdness. I know what you mean. 3y
vivastory You really nailed it with this review. All of those elements make Japanese lit feel very distinct I think. I'm so happy that this one worked so well for you. What a spectacular view! 3y

What a gorgeous book! I loved Chasey, the narrator, and all she stands for. Her grief and ambitions, her doubts and her love for books. “It is not nothing” what she‘s going through - as someone says to her in the end. It‘s a raw feel good book if that makes sense.
