Disappointed in this one. It‘s bound so beautifully and smells great, but for something that‘s labeled as an atlas and says it celebrates great artwork inspired by Tolkien without too much explanation in the preface, there‘s not a lot of artwork and a lot of words. Also a lot of dense family tree type charts and timelines. Would much rather recommend reading illustrated editions of the Silmarillion, Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings.

Here's a photo I took of the huge map of Middle-Earth done in tapestry that's hanging in the Cité internationale de la tapisserie in Aubusson (France).

On 18 July 2017, tens of us started an adventure, but only 5 kept going: @Daisey @wordslinger42 @BookwormAHN @Riveted_Reader_Melissa and myself.
Together, we crossed the gates of Morning and entered the Undying Lands to learn about the Valar. We cheered Beren and Luthien as they fought Morgoth, fled Numenor with Elendil and finally came to Middle-earth and its Rings.

I'll forever remember that journey,ladies!
On this anniversary, I hank you 😘

BookwormAHN It's been fantastic 🐉 1y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa What great memories! Both the stories and reading with you ladies. Who would have guessed that a fun adventure would lead us through all 12 Histories of Middle Earth. Bilbo was right, you do need to be careful stepping out your door, who knows where the road might take you. 😉 1y
BookwormAHN @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well said 👏🏻 1y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂 adventures are twisty mysterious fickle things. 1y

1. I can‘t stand editing/proofreading mistakes that pull me out of the story. (Example: a character uses a nickname the whole book and suddenly is called by his full name for no reason.)
2. Full set of HOME plus Letters plus Unfinished/Lost Tales…

The Nature of Middle-Earth | J. R. R. Tolkien

Pickpick

Definitely only for Tolkienistas, as it delves into the minutiae of the Professor's creative process which will, I think, be of zero interest to the causal reader. Divided into three parts, the first of which is the driest, having lengthy lists, tables and calculations of Elvish population growth and lifespans. The other two parts I found juicier and more expansive of the legendarium. 👇🏼

Bookwomble ... It's much in the style of Unfinished Tales and The History of Middle-earth, so if you enjoyed those books, this will be right up your street
4⭐, one deducted for list-fever (which I nevertheless recognise as academically important).

hannah-leeloo I love this cover! 3y
Bookwomble @hannah-leeloo It's a lovely illustration, isn't it? It's by Ted Nasmith, and I think it's of Taniquetil in Valinor 🙂 3y

Feeling both amused and somewhat gladdened that when typing the title of the chapter I'm up to, "Galadriel and Celeborn", my phone's autocomplete already knew their names! ??‍♀️??‍♂️?
