Elizabeth and Her German Garden | Elizabeth Von Arnim

Pickpick

Well, that was completely delightful. Originally #publishedanonymously (to avoid embarrassing her husband it seems!) This is a quiet novella of daily life… of a beautiful garden, bantering with her husband, her children, and an annoying house guest. Charming, gentle and a lovely escape…. A little gem. #pop21 Just 2 to go!!!

Cinfhen Cover looks delightful 😁book sounds lovely 3y

Out of Africa | Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen)
post image
Pickpick

This is Dinesen‘s memoir about about life on her coffee plantation in #Kenya, the atmosphere of Africa, about the people she meets and about the indigenous Kikuyos, who work and live with her on the grounds. It's barely possible to make a living off the coffee, but despite hard times, her deep love and respect for the land and the people becomes very clear.

Jane Eyre | Charlotte Bront

Pickpick

This is another light pick for me. Not a bad classic, but a bit long and rather slow chain of events.

I appreciate that Jane remains headstrong despite a rather suffocating upbringing and that she remains true to herself throughout.

Rochester was boring & when his truth is revealed, even though it should be disturbing, I couldn't help but laugh! Finally, Eddie, you are interesting!

This is not a romance. This felt like two people, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Who experienced enough of life, meet up and decide life together forever couldn't be worse than their lot up until now, so why the hell not get together?!

The writing didn't feel too stodgy but I was glad I listened to the audio to reply help get the meanings & emotions of some phrases. At least I'm one book close to be being "well read".

ravenlee I‘ve never gotten the obsession with this book. It‘s fine. My MIL and SIL think Rochester is the quintessential romantic hero, and I‘m just here like 🤨. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I've never been able to get through this one... although I'll admit I haven't tried very hard 😂 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TheAromaofBooks That was me with A Tale of Two Cities. First chapter: Great! You have my attention, let's do this. By chapter 5, my attention kept waning. I think I realized all was lost around chapter 13 the first time and 11 the second time. It just wasn't the right time to try it. 4y
Bookzombie I think the first time I read Jane Eyre I was a very young teen and I thought like @ravenlee ‘s MIL and SIL. This was also emphasized by the Timothy Dalton movie I saw at about the same time. I still love the story, but I don‘t see it in the same way now. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @ravenlee Maybe they were dreaming of a carefree life in an attic? 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Bookzombie I admit, a hot actor might persuade me to be Team Rochester because I'm very visual, especially when I was younger, but I didn't pick up on anything romantic. I think I need more actions than words. Stolen glances and inviting another woman to your estate and spending all your time with her only declare your feelings for me later just hits different. 4y
