Malice: A Mystery | Keigo Higashino
"This smart and original mystery is a true page-turner... will baffle, surprise, and draw out suspicion until the final few pages. With each book, Higashino continues to elevate the modern mystery as an intense and inventive literary form." Library Journal (starred review) "Fiendishly clever... Higashino offers one twist after another... Readers will marvel at the artful way the plot builds to the solution." Publishers Weekly (starred review)***Acclaimed bestselling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka is found brutally murdered in his home on the night before he's planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. His body is found in his office, a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. Or so it seems. At the crime scene, Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga recognizes Hidaka's best friend, Osamu Nonoguchi. Years ago when they were both teachers, they were colleagues at the same public school. Kaga went on to join the police force while Nonoguchi eventually left to become a full-time writer, though with not nearly the success of his friend Hidaka. As Kaga investigates, he eventually uncovers evidence that indicates that the two writers' relationship was very different that they claimed, that they were anything but best friends. But the question before Kaga isn't necessarily who, or how, but why. In a brilliantly realized tale of cat and mouse, the detective and the killer battle over the truth of the past and how events that led to the murder really unfolded. And if Kaga isn't able to uncover and prove why the murder was committed, then the truth may never come out. Malice is one of the bestsellingthe most acclaimednovel in Keigo Higashino's series featuring police detective Kyochiro Kaga, one of the most popular creations of the bestselling novelist in Asia.

This ended up in a place I really wasn‘t expecting., but all the clues are there. I‘ll definitely read more in this series. The narration was a little odd, but once I got used to it, I realized it made sense for these characters and this story. #audiowalk

The characters in here were all friends when they were younger, but they‘ve all gone in different directions. Two are authors and one is a police detective. Now one has been murdered, the other may or may not be the murderer, and our detective feels a little hampered by their old friendship. The narrator is a bit odd, but I‘m liking it so far. #audiowalk

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This. Was. Awesome. Intriguing from the get-go, a dual POV story which is less about the who & more about the why, this mystery is full of complexity, subtlety, & the stubborn doggedness of a detective who refuses to believe what he sees & what he hears as he hunts for the truth. About midway through this one kicks into overdrive & is impossible to put down. It‘s the first Higashino book I‘ve read but it won‘t be the last. Loved it.

jlhammar This was my first Higashino too! So good. I then read The Devotion of Suspect X which was fantastic. Also enjoyed Salvation of a Saint. Planning to read Silent Parade sometime soon. 10mo

Wow, what incredibly precise & pointed writing. The construction of this was absolutely fascinating. The murderer is arrested before page 100? Love it! Unravelling the motive slowly for the rest of the book? Love it!

I'm just so disappointed that only 4 books of the series have been translated so far. It's easy to see why Higashino is such a success in Japan!

“Everyone has secrets. And everyone has the right to keep them. Even if they‘re dead.”

Malice is a literary triumph that transcends the boundaries of conventional mystery. Characters are chess pieces in a high-stakes game, their relationships a web of alliances & betrayals. The novel challenges readers intellectually, urging them to unravel motives. The pacing is like a heartbeat and builds tension masterfully. Must read for mystery lovers!

Osamu Nonoguchi visits his friend, bestselling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka, the day before Hidaka is due to emigrate to Canada with his new wife. Later that evening, Nonoguchi receives a telephone call from Hidaka asking him to return to his home as he needs to see him again urgently. When Nonoguchi reaches the house, all the lights are off & Hidaka doesn't answer the door, so he raises the alarm & Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga is given the case.

OutsmartYourShelf The police find Hidaka dead on the floor of his office, with both the door to the office & the front door to the house locked from the inside. Both Nonoguchi & Hidaka's wife have alibis for the time of death. Who killed the author & why?

The reader is kept at arms length from the investigation & the characters really as the murder & circumstances are told from written confessions, notes, or interview transcriptions.
12mo
OutsmartYourShelf It is a writing style that takes a little getting used to. The story starts slowly but as the twists & turns of the case started to reveal themselves, I found myself needing to know what happened next. There's no gore & most of the TWs below are not graphic. 3.5🌟

TWs: murder, infidelity, sexual assault, animal cruelty/death, bullying.

Many thanks to @BarbaraBB for putting a new Japanese fiction writer on my list! This quiet, intelligent murder mystery was so much fun to read. Not my usual genre, but it‘s done in the quiet, detailed style that makes me love Japanese fiction and I‘m here for it. I already got the two others in this series from the library.

As part of my journey into reading authors who are from Japan or books set in Japan I downloaded this one and WOW! This author blew me away with the pacing, creepy tension and storyline. It's part of a series and I found it to be a strong standalone. I will definitely be adding this author to my suspense/thriller reading list.

Such an interesting book — no action at all, but a story told ABOUT what happened and somehow works as an intense mystery. Just layer after layer of secrets and lies, so well disguised. Also, a masterclass in the unreliable narrator. Highly recommend, especially for fans of the locked room mystery.

Malice is an incredibly compelling mystery. Higashino‘s style is clear, sparse, and direct, but the substance of this novel is many layered. Malice is a true cat-and-mouse murder mystery. At every moment when you feel like you‘ve worked it out, Higashino takes you in a different direction. Immensely compelling, but easy to read. I look forward to reading more of Higashino‘s work.

I really enjoyed this murder mystery. Seldom are they written with the plot being the thought process of the detective. As someone who likes puzzles and logic problems that appealed to me. I didn't expect the different style twist it had. I wish this author was easier to find. I'd read more. Read for #booked2018 #Japanesethriller Hope to finish one more before the year ends.

Read for #japanesethriller #booked2018. A famous author is murdered and a writer friend recounts the investigation but quickly becomes a part of it himself when detective kaga digs in. Told from the friend‘s writings and Kaga‘s it quickly drew me in. The murderer was revealed fairly early but twists continued to the end. Will be reading more from this author.

Malice is everything I love in a crime thriller. It has a controlled pace that never feels rushed. It has style without the gimmick and it has a story that goes far beyond whodunit.
I would not call Malice as Higashino's best work, that honour belongs to The Devotion of Suspect X but it is up there amongst his best.

What do you think happens when a detective finds a murder without a motive. A murder of an author done brutally in his own locked room. And the suspects have rock-solid alibis. Except something doesn't add up...

'Malice' by Keigo Higashino is a perfect read for those readers who want the right twist in a crime thriller. Interesting, deceptive, and thrilling this book won't let you down.
