A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

This one was tough to get into. I got to about 150 pages and felt that it was all a grumpy older man with not much explanation as to why. I almost gave up on it but I'm glad I didn't. The writing is truly lovely and as soon as other characters came in and there was more given about Ove and why he was the way he was, there was humor and the story was endearing.

Crime , serial killer , set in Sweden. Good writing and a steady pace all the way through. I guessed the ending , which is most unusual for me 🤣. There‘s a fair bit of philosophising too and nature, which I enjoyed. I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Thanks @batsy for recommending this writer. I‘m off to start another by him now .. Under The Storm. 👍🏻❤️

batsy Very intriguing review, Cathy! Glad you enjoyed it ❤️ 14h

Tonight‘s #Naturalitsy #HyggeHour features Pippi for #ChildrensClassicRead2024 & finishing up A Little Bit of Astrology for #travelingstars2024 so I can get it sent out this week.

Drinking green tea & enjoying some KitKats a coworker brought back from Japan & a mini lemon bar from Friday‘s meeting. Mood is a bit blue that Monday came so quick.😔Last week was hard & busy & I think this week will be the same, but it‘s nice to have this quiet time.

slategreyskies I find the Kit Kat flavors available in Japan to be fascinating. Did you know that, in the past few decades, there have been hundreds of different flavors of Kit Kats released in Japan? I couldn‘t even think of hundreds of flavors if I wanted to, and the creativity with the flavors released is just amazing! Everything from roasted tea to wasabi to chestnut to sweet potato flavored ones. So incredibly cool! 🍫 5d
DebinHawaii @slategreyskies Yes! They are so creative with the flavors & I love that! The ones here weren‘t too different/fancy-white chocolate strawberry & strawberry cheesecake but they were good & fun to try! 5d

This zany red head was a childhood favorite and she stands the test of time of time. Still a fun read. Now I have a hankering to watch the movies. Pippi on the run is my favorite.

When I started this book,I immediately wanted to bail.Nahid, the narrator has just been diagnosed with cancer. She came across to me as a despicable person-angry,nasty, to her daughter & those around her.But something pulled me back into her story & I am so thankful I responded to that pull.As her life story slowly emerged,as she struggled to understand her journey herself & cope with her diagnosis,I began to feel empathy.A refugee of the Iranian🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 Revolution, she threw herself into her role with idealism & little understanding. She was marked as traitor to the Iranian regime for life.So she& her husband immigrated to Sweden. The trauma of herself as a refugee,& her compounded losses:family, culture, roots, country, never left her.She cannot get over all these losses- she states starkly:”You are condemned and your children are too. Everything remains, and everything is passed down.”🔽 (edited) 1w
kspenmoll 🔼 Her statement reminds me of The Postcard & the idea that the Holocaust & its resulting trauma stays in survivors‘ body cells for generations. (edited) 1w
