The Farm
The Farm | Tom Rob Smith
From the author of Child 44, soon to be a major film starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman, comes an intricately-knitted thriller in the vein of John Le Carre's A Perfect Spy. Daniel believed that his parents were enjoying a peaceful retirement on a remote farm in Sweden, the country of his mother's birth. But with a single phone call, everything changes. Your mother... she's not well, his father tells him. She's been imagining things - terrible, terrible things. In fact, she has been committed to a mental hospital. Before Daniel can board a plane to Sweden, his mother calls: Everything that man has told you is a lie. I'm not mad... I need the police... Meet me at Heathrow. Presented with a horrific crime, a conspiracy that implicates his own father, Daniel must examine the evidence and decide: who is telling the truth, his mother or his father? And he has secrets of his own that for too long he has kept hidden...

A bit clunky and clumsy, and far fetched. Page turner though.

I‘m nominating The Farm by Tom Rob Smith. His latest book was such a disappointment I had to talk about how much I liked this one. The descriptions of the snow and the cold made me feel it right in my lungs. Here‘s what I wrote in 2020:

This book was spooky and menacing. A London couple who should be retiring instead have to take their meager savings and try to make a living on a rural farm in Sweden. Things don‘t go well.

Nicos I have this on my shelf. Will it put me in a festive mood or make me bah humbug ?! What was up with his latest ? (edited) 12mo
Bookwormjillk @Nicos it‘s not festive at all, but great if you want to read about cold weather. A great book to be snowed in with. His latest was…different. 12mo

It‘s (unintentional) ancient ARC month here at Chez Megan, and The Farm finally made its way off the shelf. I enjoyed this mystery of a mother caught in a conspiracy…or is she? Son, Daniel, has the uneasy duty of determining whether his mother has fallen suddenly and dramatically ill or whether she is, indeed, caught up in a web of wrong-doing. The storytelling has an urgent, breathless quality to it that is perfectly pitched. Recommended.

A very strange story about a woman either losing her mind or pursuing a dangerous conspiracy. You really won‘t have any answers until the end. It was compelling and, yet, I don‘t really like it. You‘ll have to read it to decide for yourself.

Marsha Skrypuch Even strange books by Tom Rob Smith are good. I'll read anything by him! 3y

Bk3 of my #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon2020 #Pageathon #Thrilloween #Sbooktober #Gothtober #RockyHorrorathon & #CYOReadathon is done! It covers the prompts of #HorrorOrThrillerByNewToYouAuthor #DevilsFoodCake #ForeignCountry & #FrankNFurter It definitely wasn‘t what I was expecting, but it was a very good read. Has you questioning what the truth is the whole time & the ending was a huge surprise. Highly recommend. 896pts for #TeamSlaughter🥳

At the end of day2 of my #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon2020 #CYOReadathon #Gothtober #Thrilloween #RockyHorrorathon #Pageathon etc(😱) I‘m halfway through Bk3 and just over 19hrs of reading done. So far, this thriller is everything it should be, unsettling, strange & full of hidden motives. Which means I‘m enjoying it immensely. How‘s your ‘thons going? How many are you doing, if any? 1pt. #TeamSlaughter

Clwojick Way to go! You‘re doing fantastic! I don‘t even know how many I‘m doing right now 😆 I‘m so jealous that I work again tonight! I‘ll be reading some tomorrow, and then it‘s back to work for me on Sunday. This won‘t be a very productive Readathon for me, but I‘m sure I‘ll make up for it later in the month 😆 4y
Lizpixie @Clwojick I‘m trying to bujo everything so I can keep track but it‘s still making my head hurt! I‘m lucky that I have more reading time this month coz I‘m having work done on the house so the gardens are at a standstill. Plus the hubs is working almost 7days a week so no distractions too. You‘ll be caught up real soon I have no doubt lovely! 4y
Clwojick Yeah, we definitely didn‘t expect there would be SO MANY options for readathons this month when we added in the stackable points. It‘s going to take some serious math for those #ChallengeJunkies like us 🤣 4y
Hooked_on_books I really liked this book! It kept me on edge in the best way. 4y

I managed to get this read in about 48hrs - just in time to discuss in book club. It is a quick book because you don't want to put it down. It puts a unique spin on the unreliable narrator that had become popular in psychological thrillers. There are some twists that I didn't see coming. Also, I read that the author created this story based on his real life experience with his mom, who suffered from mental illness. Just made me love it more. 4/5

Just started this book for a book club that meets tomorrow. Why do I always wait until the last minute?!!! Hope no one sees me reading at my desk today (or cares).

Cinfhen This sounds good!!! I‘ll be awaiting your review 7y
Morr_Books @Cinfhen I'm 60 pages in and hooked. I read a fair share of psychological thrillers, and lately they all seem too similar. This has a different feel already. 7y
Cinfhen Yay!! Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏼 🤞🏼 hope it ends strong 7y
Morr_Books @Cinfhen It was good! End was surprising to me (maybe not for others). Maybe the end went a bit too quickly after a lengthy build up, but I liked it. 7y

I finished the audible version of this book today. The narrators were spot on. The story had a nice twist I didn't see coming. I'd have a hard time imagining reading it rather than listening. I think it could get boring. But the man and woman narrating it were terrific. This Swedish book felt very Scandinavian too in multiple ways my having a Scandinavian family and watching/reading this genre. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 of 5. Thanks @SoniaC for recommending it!

SoniaC I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. I agree the narrators really were so very right for it. This was a story definitely meant for audio. 8y
