pickMasterful horror stories. Enriquez‘s writing is assured and lively as she veers into the supernatural (ghosts, morphing faces) whilst staying believable & grounded in modern day Buenos Aires. Her characters are strong & singular as they battle real-world problems in relationships, work & society‘s expectations. The horror lies just beneath the surface & ordinary people can be the monsters. I love the energy & wry humour of the prose.

Starts with a shooting then turns into something that reminds me of a twisted version of The Breakfast Club. Great writing. Strange twist.

pickThis is a haunted house novella translated from Spanish. This house has been inhabited by 4 generations of women some of who are witches. A granddaughter returns home after spending time in jail after being accused of kidnapping the boy she nannies. This is intergenerational trauma, domestic violence, class warfare. I kept thinking of that Mean Girl‘s quote-I don‘t hate you cause you‘re fat, you‘re fat because I hate you. But instead it‘s- 👇🏼

These stories focuses on the horrific in the everyday, in relationships and how generational trauma effects us. I think that is what makes these stories so scary. Like in the first story where a young boy dies in a troubled neighborhood because no one dares open their door and he comes back to hunt them.
