The Dead Zone | Stephen King

Pickpick

This is our February selection for the Constant Reader book club. I‘ve watched the original 1983 movie adaptation multiple times and first read the book in 2015 as an audiobook. This time, I decided to read my physical copy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it again and liked it better the second time.

Soscha Is Constant Readers a local or online club? Just curious, behind one indeed! 5d
LoverOfLearning Finally read my first ever Steven King bookm Started with Misery was pretty good! Any recommendations for my next read by him? 5d
NatalieR @Soscha It‘s a local, in person book club. Here, you may want to check out #losersclub #constantreader 4d

NatalieR @LoverOfLearning Misery was my first King book too! 😃 Glad you liked it. The Shining is one of my favorites. 4d
Soscha An online King Constant Reader group is doing the second Dark Tower book. I‘ve not read the first yet though. 😓 4d
sarahbarnes I liked this one too when I read it. He has some really good ones. 3d
LoverOfLearning @NatalieR that's funny! 💯 love that. That's a long book huh! Maybe I'll read it ! 3d
NatalieR @Soscha The Dark Tower series is quite a commitment. The first book was tough for me to get through. The rest were really good though. 3d
NatalieR @LoverOfLearning It‘s not too long. It‘s engaging and suspenseful. 🤓 3d
Soscha I read the Dead Zone some time ago. It‘s logged on my Goodreads but I didn‘t leave a written review. Is this the one with an insane POTUS candidate? Damn good but way too close to reality at this point in history, if I may say. 3d
NatalieR @Soscha 😅 Yep, that‘s it! While reading it, I kept thinking how It‘s VERY close to our reality. 3d

Five stories -enjoyed all of them, some more than others (The Man Who Loved Flowers predictable, Night Surf like Rage seemed to predict future events) of these the one I enjoyed the most was The Last Rung on the Ladder, shows King is very good storyteller, not just horror, any stories. A brother and sister and their relationship is explored focusing on one incident from childhood. Overall a good read (audiobook).
Make a great day everyone 🙂

bthegood This was not the all of the Night Shift stories that #LosersClub is reading, it was how I joined in this month - thanks for hosting @BarkingMadRead 🙂 (edited) 2w

King famously disliked the film adaptation of The Shining. Having seen the movie several times, I guess I can see his dissatisfaction, but I think Kubrick did a good job. The book is different enough that I got well caught up in the suspense. Very good #constantreader #losersclub

BarkingMadRead The movie is really good, the miniseries is closer to the book, but not nearly as good! I‘ve also noticed that whenever King is involved, the movies tend to be a little campy. When he‘s not, they are way creepier, and way better IMO 3w

I love this book. It's one of my favorite King books. It's the classic haunted hotel story. Family, who already has issues, moves inside a hotel to take care of it during It's off season and all hell brakes lose.
I would love a prequel with Grady and what happened with his family 🖤

One of my favourite Stephen King books. This was a reread for me. I watched the movie for the first time recently and it was great too but the book had much more interesting character development.

BarkingMadRead I totally agree. The miniseries is way closer to the book, but not as good as the movie 3w
AnishaInkspill I really enjoyed reading this one too. 2w

bthegood I will be jumping in this month and I'll be listening to “Stories for Night Shift“ so I'll be “reading“ about 5 of the stories - it is the perfect audiobook this month. Thanks for hosting. (edited) 2w

Bookwormjillk One of his best I think. I love a haunted hotel. One of these days I'm going to read this and Dr. Sleep back to back. 3w

TieDyeDude I'm late to the party, but I really enjoyed this. Usually, King really flushes out the community that the book is taking place in, but this has such a narrow scope that the few characters and the hotel itself get much more attention. 3w
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude yes! He usually has soooooo many characters, this was nice to really get to focus on the few involved 3w

My #BookSpin list for February is full of books from my TBR, with the exception of Night Shift by Stephen King, which is the #LosersClub book of the month. I will be getting it from the library since I don't already own it. All of the other books will qualify for my #ShelfLove reading challenge and many of them will qualify for the #2025OffMyShelf prompts as well. I picked mostly shorter books since February is usually not a good month for me.
