A Sunny Place for Shady People
A Sunny Place for Shady People | Mariana Enríquez, Megan McDowell (translator)
14 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
A diabolical collection of stories featuring achingly human characters whose lives intertwine with ghosts, goblins, and the macabre, by “one of Latin America’s most exciting authors” (Silvia Moreno-Garcia)
On the shores of this river, all the birds that fly, drink, perch on branches, and disturb siestas with the demonic squawking of the possessed—all those birds were once women.
Welcome to Argentina and the fascinating, frightening, fantastical imagination of Mariana Enriquez. In twelve spellbinding new stories, Enriquez writes about ordinary people, especially women, whose lives turn inside out when they encounter terror, the surreal, and the supernatural. A neighborhood nuisanced by ghosts, a family whose faces melt away, a faded hotel haunted by a girl who dissolved in the water tank on the roof, a riverbank populated by birds that used to be women—these and other tales illuminate the shadows of contemporary life, where the line between good and evil no longer exists.
Lyrical and hypnotic, heart-stopping and deeply moving, Enriquez’s stories never fail to enthrall, entertain, and leave us shaken. Translated by the award-winning Megan McDowell, A Sunny Place for Shady People showcases Enriquez’s unique blend of the literary and the horrific, and underscores why Kazuo Ishiguro, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, calls her “the most exciting discovery I’ve made in fiction for some time.”

Masterful horror stories. Enriquez‘s writing is assured and lively as she veers into the supernatural (ghosts, morphing faces) whilst staying believable & grounded in modern day Buenos Aires. Her characters are strong & singular as they battle real-world problems in relationships, work & society‘s expectations. The horror lies just beneath the surface & ordinary people can be the monsters. I love the energy & wry humour of the prose.

ChaoticMissAdventures Love the title!! 2mo
BarbaraBB Love the cover too. 2mo
Abailliekaras @BarbaraBB such a great cover! 😍 2mo
Reggie The story about how the mom was sexually assaulted and she has that face disfiguring disease and how her daughter gets it and how none of them knew about the mother‘s attacks. How trauma still affects your family and their future. She really is a brilliant writer. 1mo
Abailliekaras @Reggie she makes it feel so real, strong writing and captivating even when it‘s grim. 1mo

Another short story collection winner from Enriquez.

These stories focuses on the horrific in the everyday, in relationships and how generational trauma effects us. I think that is what makes these stories so scary. Like in the first story where a young boy dies in a troubled neighborhood because no one dares open their door and he comes back to hunt them.

CSeydel What a cover! 10mo

For those that loved Our Share of Night this is a lovely little collection of short stories whilst we wait in anticipation for the next chunkster.
I‘m not a big short story fan but I loved these like I love Kings- imaginative and creepy and slightly melancholy.
Turning into a favourite author, write quicker please.

Today is my birthday. What better way to spend it than visiting a bookstore?

In Norway stores are generally closed on Sundays, but there‘s some exceptions & one is a newly opened bookstore downtown, Prismatic Pages. They sell books in English, new & old

The stack on the left are the books I bought there

I view all the books I buy in September as birthday presents to myself, so the stack on the right & the comics are bought earlier this month

Amiable Happy birthday! 🎂🎁🎈 13mo

My last Durham book stop was a lovely indie, Collected Books, which specialises in women writers, & serves coffee and cake, too!
• Learning more about autism to better help my ND clients, and as ongoing personal development. ♾️
• Learning more about trans issues to better help my trans clients, and support loved ones 🏳️‍⚧️
• More Latin American horror, this time from Argentina 🇦🇷
• More essays, this time from a writer I know nothing about, so🤞

Super creepy horror short stories? Yes! This author? Double yes! This is an auto read author for me. I love the setting (Argentina) and I love how each story is unique. She has the creep factor mastered. I love them all.
