pickI appreciated so much about The Belles. Clayton's purpose--which she outlines in her author's note--is crystal clear. She develops her appreciation for all types of beauty and her resistance of societal objectification of women. Her world building is excellent, and Camellia is a great, strong protagonist. I loved the fast-moving plot, the brilliant women at its center, and the fabulous back stories that create rich secondary characters.
