The Grammarians: A Novel | Cathleen Schine

Pickpick

I have no idea why this sat on my shelf unread for 5 years, but once I picked it up it was a really fast read. It‘s a novel about identical twin sisters, both of whom are really into grammar/linguistics from a young age, and the family that surrounds them. I liked it. I kept thinking it was a true story, probably because the last book I read WAS a true story about identical twin sisters. But whether fiction or memoir, it was a solid story.

I read this after seeing the recent review by @Brooke_H and it was a fast and interesting read about identical twins who were adopted by different families and only learned of each other as adults. The writing is chronological and told in alternating diary entries (ish) of both women. I found it fascinating.

I recently found a treasure trove of free books online (will add link in comments) and I have spent the last few days downloading every Sweet Valley book they had. I decided to read through the SV Kids series along with my SVT read-through and SV Senior Year. Yes, I am a nerd but I‘ve never read this series and I love the feeling of nostalgia I get when I read any Sweet Valley book. 🤓 I fully credit Sweet Valley books for my love of reading. ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Thank you, Francine Pascal! Anyhoo, book one of SV Kids finds Jess and Liz in 2nd grade preparing for their 7th birthday party. Lots of familiar faces here with their later personalities on display even here in elementary school. I‘m looking forward to this read-through. 4⭐️ #SweetValley #SweetValleyKids #SVK #twins #nostalgia 👯‍♀️ 2w

Unique MG novel about twins Lark and Iris set in Minneapolis. It involves love, separation, self empowerment, some fantasy, and the unfathomable closeness of identical twins.

The long-lost identical twin is a ridiculous unbelievable trope, but it was Elyse and Paula's reality. Separated when just infants and adopted out to different families, the two sisters found each other when one of them wrote to the adoption agency asking for information on her birth mother. The two eventually discovered that they were part of a sketchy psychological nature/nurture study by a doctor at their adoption agency. A fascinating memoir.

ManyWordsLater There‘s a movie called “three identical strangers” that might be part of the same study. 2w
Brooke_H @ManyWordsLater Yes, it is! I would‘ve mentioned that if Litsy had given me more character space to type. 😉 2w

It‘s the 5th #SweetValleyHalloween & the elementary school is having a costume contest and parade for the grand re-opening of the Stardust Theatre. The Magnificent Magico, a puppeteer, is in town along with his daughter, Sam. She wants to be more involved in her dad‘s life, but he seems to want to leave her behind with Mrs. Creely, Lila‘s neighbor! Fun costumes in this one like the twins‘ two-headed sea monster, Lila as Dorothy, & Winston a joker!

It‘s the first Sweet Valley soap box car race! Ricky Capaldo‘s younger brother is born, prompting Elizabeth to learn that she‘s four minutes older than her twin. She turns into a bossy monster and Jessica‘s fed up! Meanwhile, Ken Matthews is determined to win to follow in his dad‘s winning footsteps. But it‘s not until the twins team back up that they even get a chance at winning! A cute and fun one for sure!

Mehso-so

Scraping into the So-So category, there is quite a lot I don't like about this. The structure, for example, is annoying & the writing is also, well, annoying e.g a page of right aligned, very short sentences means it's a Profound Bit. Plus, large stretches of it are quite dull. The alternate storyline only serves to increase the predictability of the thing & the cheesy/highly unlikely moments defused any emotional resonance.

Overwhelmingly meh.

A Pam and Penny story from the 1950s; I still adore these. 😀

Eggs My mom would have adored this - she always hoped her identical twin daughters would have a double wedding with identical twin grooms 4mo
dabbe @Eggs Are you an identical twin? 🤩 These books are such a part of my childhood. There are four Pam and Penny books, and I still read them over and over again. I love all of the 50s nostalgia, too! 💙🩵💙 4mo
Eggs @dabbe I am not a twin; I was the much later baby. My twin sisters had already left for college when I was born. Any idea where to find this book? BTW, the twins led totally opposite lives; 1 married w 7 kids and the other a nun 4mo
dabbe @Eggs Wow! That's quite an age gap! How interesting that they led such different lives, too! The book is on Amazon for $17-18 in paperback, but they're published by Image Cascade and are cheaper there. Here's the link:
