“She wouldn‘t trade for any other shade” This beautifully written book, Skin Like Mine, written by LaTisha M. Perry and illustrated by Bea Jackson, is a RF that truly celebrates diversity. This book illustrates wonderfully how you should love the skin you‘re in; my favorite line in the book was “because, we know it‘s what‘s inside that matters the most”. This is a great book for a class RA and a must have for your library. #ucflae3414

Emmaturtle3 ESOL strategy #22 can be used when asking questions about the text to students during RA. UDL 9.2 is a great guideline that can be used to process any personal struggles students have regarding the color of their skin, a tough yet super important conversation. 4y

It has information on how to tackle your own biases, to creating lessons to help students think critically and learn about social justice. I will for sure be using this resource in the future!! 4y

“My father can read big words too. Like....Constantinople and Timbuktu!!” Hop on Pop is a fun P book by Theodore Geisel, a.k.a. the great Dr. Seuss! This book excites children to the max with it‘s fun illustrations, vocabulary, and most importantly the rhyming! I think this book would be great for an AS due to the fact that there are so many great Dr. Seuss books and lots of resources to find information! #ucflae3414

ESOL strategy #16 is used when students are integrating the reading and writing activity of an author study to this book. Mazzole18 Hop on Pop is a great story when building fluency and teaching student to learn to read. The rhyme and repetition make it fun and easy for students. It is also good for struggling readers to build confidence. Thanks for the resources to help incorporate the wonderful stories of Dr. Seuss in the classroom. 4y

Among the Hidden is a great SF series written by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I guarantee you will be hooked on this series once you begin! What would you do in a world where you were limited to two children, but end up with three?? Follow Luke, the third child‘s story, who struggles to stay hidden, while craving the world! #ucflae3414

DrSpalding This is a fantastic series of books! What a fabulous resource. I have read the first five or so. I do not have all of the universal design nor English learner strategies committed to memory so without the verbiage I do not know if you are aligning them appropriately. 4y

SkippyJon Jones By Judy Schachner is a great F book to do a RA with the class. This Siamese cat not an ordinary cat, he has a large head, big ears, and a small tail. Since he looks different, he believes that he is a Chihuahua. After going into his closet, he is transported to another world where he goes by “El Skippito” a great sword fighter and his journey begins. You‘re going to have to read it to find out what happens next. #ucflae3414

DrSpalding Correction noted. This is modern fantasy at its best. The Spanish terms provide the opportunity for you to truly teach two languages. I really like the idea of having a bilingual word wall. Think about creating QR codes for Spanish words that you place right next to the English word on your word wall. 4y

This adorable RA F picture-book is a must have in your future classroom especially if you want to encourage your students to read more. Written and illustrated by Tad Hills, the story is about how Rocket the dog learns how to read from a little yellow bird. This book has won the Parents Choice Silver honor and has been on the New York Times Best seller list.

carolinem ESOL strategy is ESOL strategy 11 which placing language into meaningful context since this book is full of great vocabulary words. UDL principle 8.1 which is heighten salience of goals and objectives which is crucial for this book since the vocabulary is higher. 5y

“Grandfather‘s Journey” written and illustrated by Allen Say is a wonderful HF RA picture book. This picture book is about a mans love for two countries, the USA and Japan and his constant desire to go back and forth over the course of his life. UDL principle 2.4 which is promote understanding across language which can be portrayed with this book.

This RF book by R.J, Palacio is about Augie Pullman transition into middle school. He was born with a craniofacial abnormality and his parents try to transfer him from home school to a private middle school. It follows him making friends, being bullied, and finding his way in middle school, being accepted for who he is. It won the Young Reader in 2015. #ucflae3414

maciforster This book would be great for IR since it is a chapter book. The students would be able to discuss and read it at their own pace to be able to fully comprehend the book. You could use UDL strategy 3.2 to help develop the relationships throughout the book. Also with EL strategy #2 when doing a discussion to help those struggling along the way 5y

One of the most underrated holiday stories comes to life in this F book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. A young boy takes a magical train to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. He finds out that one of the children will be selected to receive the first gift of Christmas from Santa. Who will be picked? What will they get? Most importantly, do you still believe? This book won a Caldecott Medal for its fantastic illustrations.

Jgolub13 This book provides a great opportunity to use the culture of many students who celebrate Christmas. This is why I believe that ESOL strategy #24 Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum is perfect. I also believe that UDL principle Activate or supply background knowledge (3.1) fits as well. This should activate background knowledge in many of the students. 5y
Jgolub13 I love this lesson from scholastic. It assesses comprehension by having students “record a podcast“ to tell the story of The Polar Express to the generations after the students. This NF this a fun picture book to share with the class in a RA. The fun facts about animals and how big or small they are will build the interest of young readers. This would be great following up learning about animals after a science lesson on animals. For an ESOL strategy, I would sit in a small group with the students and go over the facts again for comprehension, not memorization. #ucflae3414
