Posting my #weekinbooks just a bit early simply because I have read SO MANY great books this week & I don't want my list to be too unwieldy. Favorites since my previous post: Kuang's “Yellowfaace“ (a smart, nuanced examination of publishing & bookish spaces that are often lacking in nuanced discussion), Great Bookish Quotes (I posted a review of this & plan on buying a copy to help support ALA & because I def intend on rereading) & def not (CONT)

vivastory least: Deadly Class. I just finished vol. 7. This is a series that I started towards the end of January & love. 80's counterculture music, assassin training school & meta references with a lot of heart with the great character work. There have been many moments that have made my jaw just drop. Most notable this week were volumes 4 & the one that I just finished. (edited) 3mo
LeahBergen I‘m looking forward to Yellowface! 3mo
vivastory @LeahBergen I read it in 2 sittings. I think it is very compelling. I'll be interested to see what you think! 3mo

This has been my slowest reading week so far this year, in terms of quantity, but I still read some gems. Favorites are from a current read: Yusef Komunyakaa's poems from “Everyday Mojo“ & a handful of pieces I read in Gaiman's “Fragile Things“ (notably “Feeders & Eaters,“ “Monarch of the Glen“ & “How to Talk to Girls at Parties“)
#weekinbooks

TheBookHippie It was a slow week here as well. 3mo

vivastory @Suet624 @indoordame Isn't it cool? I just found it. It's by Iranian artist Alireza Darvish (edited) 3mo
vivastory @TheBookHippie The end of the month is always very busy time for me at work 3mo
TheBookHippie I agree cool photo!!! 3mo
Reggie Cool graphic! 3mo
TieDyeDude I liked How to Talk to Girls at Parties. They did a good job adapting it into a graphic novels, and there was a trippy, but fun, film adaptation, too. 3mo
vivastory @TieDyeDude I knew about the gn versions (have been meaning to check out) but was unaware of the film adaptation. Thanks for the heads-up! 3mo

Without a doubt the most pleasant surprise that was bookish this past week was the positive response to my #bookerdozen post. I loved seeing all of the posts & added quite a few to my TBR. I loved @thekidupstairs #womensdozen post & the response posts. Some great reads for #weekinbooks The real standouts though are “Convenience Store Woman“ which I finished yesterday. Something so magical about a lot of contemporary Japanese fiction. (CONT)

vivastory The other two pieces that stood out the most are from my current story collection: Gaiman's “Fragile Things.“ First is “Bitter Grounds.“ Gaiman does something at the end of this piece that he did at the end of a few other pieces in this collection that I just really love. It's a twist or ambiguous, but it doesn't feel cheap at all. I'm thinking of other stories like “Study In Emerald“ & “Closing Time.“ The second piece is the poem (CONT) 3mo
vivastory “Instructions.“ There are a few poems strewn throughout Fragile Things, but this has been the one that has caught my attention the most. It is pretty meta, including a few references to other stories within FT, but I think it would work by itself & it is a beautiful poem in its own right. 3mo
merelybookish So cool. It was fun to scroll through and checked out people's lists! Just as a twist, here's the Booker I hated. 😆 3mo

MicheleinPhilly @merelybookish Pretty sure that‘s the book that ceased my obsessive Booker reading. Ugh. What a dud. 3mo
merelybookish @MicheleinPhilly Terrible. So much penis talk. 🙄🙄 3mo
LeahBergen I never got around to making my own list but I sure enjoyed reading everyone else‘s! 3mo
Aimeesue I have the illustrated book of Instructions. It was illustrated by Charles Vess, who is a patron of my librarian friend‘s library. I get jealous because she talks to him all the time. And tells me about it, of course. (edited) 3mo
vivastory @Aimeesue It's so funny you mention that! I have a decidedly mixed reaction to the graphic adaptions to Gaimain's work. I was *reallY* disappointed in the graphic novel of American Gods that I read, IMO it really added nothing to the story, while on the other hand you have a BRILLIANT illiustrator such as Chris Riddell doing the illustrations for several of his works (!!!) I recently saw a video on booktube of the Vess & am def intrigued! 3mo
vivastory @merelybookish Although I have read my share of favorites, I apparently haven't read enough from the list to have a nominee for one that I really disliked. HOWEVER, the MB International is a different story: Dangers of Smoking In Bed & The War of the Poor. (To be far, I have Our Share Of The Night & am looking forward to it) 3mo
Aimeesue @vivastory Riddell is so brilliant! And yeah, I can‘t say graphic novelizations of his longer stuff appeal to me at all. Short stories, maybe - A Study in Emerald worked well, I thought - but novels, not so much. 3mo
CBee I really enjoyed Convenience Store Woman 👏🏻 3mo
vivastory @CBee I'm looking forward to exploring Murata's other works! 3mo

Yet another frigid week, but tried not to let it damper my bookthusiasm. The standouts in my #weekinbooks are P. Djèlí Clark's story “Hide & Seek“ in the anthology “Out There Screaming.“ As I mentioned before this is one of the best stories that I have read this year. Also, Brenna Thummler's “Sheets“ (an emotionally impactful YA graphic novel w/ great autumnal vibes that can be read anytime of year) & Ursula K. Le Guin's “Rocannon's World.“ (CONT)

vivastory This one I read as part of #AuldLangSpine It's astonishing to me that this was Le Guin's debut. Present in Rocannon's World are several themes that she would return to in later works. Le Guin excells at writing quests in her book (physical/emotional/mental etc) There is one in Left Hand of Darkness that I read years ago that I still think about. For any genre snobs who would claim that serious topics cannot be addressed through a scifi or (CONT) 4mo
vivastory fantasy work of fiction, I would dare them to say the same with a straight face after reading Le Guin. Currently reading: S. Land's Maid (another weird work week, so didn't listen to audio much) Neil Gaiman's “Fragile Things“ (Loving this story collection), Silentiary (Still halfway through.)

cariashley I‘ve always wanted to read Le Guin! Need to get on that. 4mo
vivastory @cariashley This one is a novella, so it only took a few hours but it felt like I had read a full novel! Her book “Lathe of Heaven“ (also fairly short) is one of my fave books of all-time 4mo
Branwen I love Sheets! It's such a good graphic novel! 4mo
vivastory @Branwen It was a great surprise! Looking forward to the follow-up 4mo

Despite the obstacles posed by the ridiculous weather this week, this booktrovert had a great #weekinbooks Favorite reads: Butler's Collected Stories, Mrs. Caliban, Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol Book 1. Currently 75 pages into NYRB Classic Silentiary (interesting), S. Land's Maid (didn't listen to much audio this week due to work) & Out There Screaming (sad to report an underwhelming experience so far).

TheBookHippie The weather ❄️❄️🥶🥶❄️❄️ 4mo
vivastory @TheBookHippie -30 w/ wind-chill yesterday 😬 I had to take my car to a mechanic today to have air put in the tires bc all of the air machines at gas stations are not working bc of the weather 4mo
TheBookHippie @vivastory we had no power for 14 hours. 😵‍💫🥶 we‘re at -25 currently with wind chill … and ughhhhhhh car things in winter is zero fun. 4mo
vivastory @TheBookHippie No power for 14 hours?! I lost my power for just one hour today and was starting to have to layer. I can't imagine!! 4mo

In keeping with my New Year's Resolution of Book Vibes Only, I had a fantastic reading week. The highlights: Chain-Gang All-Stars, Before The Coffee Gets Cold & the first 2 volumes of Gerard Way's take on Doom Patrol. I have been reading an Octavia Butler story a day from The Collected Stories, which has been incredible (predict it showing up as a favorite again) & am a third of the way through Stephanie Land's heartbreaking memoir Maid (on audio)

Ruthiella I love Octavia E. Butler! I‘ve only read a few novels so far, but they‘ve all been disturbing but thought provoking. 4mo
TheBookHippie Oh Stephanie … I‘m waiting on her new one. Long wait at library! 4mo

kspenmoll I went to an author talk when Stephanie Land‘s book came out. It was so informative & she was so genuine. 4mo
vivastory @Ruthiella She's great! Disturbing & thought provoking are apt descriptors! Wild Seed was the last novel that I read by her, but it is one of my favorites (edited) 4mo
vivastory @TheBookHippie I can imagine! I have a great library system (believe me when I say that this is something that I do not take for granted & am genuinely very grateful for) & am lucky enough to have obtained a copy of Class recently 4mo
vivastory @kspenmoll I watched an interview with her on YT (from the Poured Over podcast) for her latest & was reminded about Maid. I'm glad that I checked it out. 4mo
Megabooks Glad you had a great reading week! 4mo
