Bailedbailed

I‘ve been seeing this one get such amazing reviews and my hold of it finally came in so I thought I‘d try to sneak 1 more in for #AAM, but the first 100 pages aren‘t holding my interest so I‘m bailing for now, maybe I‘ll try again sometime when I‘m in a different frame of mind. @Soubhiville

tpixie I finished it because it was for a bookclub, but I didn‘t enjoy 5h
IndoorDame @tpixie that one I really liked, but it seemed to be one of those love it or hate it books 5h
LitStephanie I loved this book, but you totally should bail if something doesn't hold your interest. Just because other people think it is great doesn't mean everyone will. 5h
tpixie @IndoorDame I‘ve only seen people loving it, but it didn‘t win awards with our @litsybookclub. We loved the characters, but thought too many stories joined in the mix. Oh well! Onto the next book!! 4h

Wow! What did I just read in today‘s chapter?! That was like 6 pages of names and not a lot else! I recognized 5 or 6 really major ones from history, and 2 or 3 from this novel, but how many of the other 30 odd am I going to need going forward? Do you think I should bookmark this chapter and read it a bunch more times until it starts to make some kind of sense? Or do I just go forward and assume this is background I don‘t actually need? #LesMisCAD

dariazeoli I‘m glad I saw your post before starting today‘s chapter! I don‘t have a good answer though 🤔 May be worth flagging the chapter for later, just in case. We can shake our fists at Hugo later if those names are never mentioned again! 2d

This had the most amazing first and last lines of anything I‘ve ever read! And while it was a character novel about unlikeable characters, the gorgeous writing style and incisive insights into these people‘s lives made it a joy to read. I kept thinking it would make such an incredible stage play, so I can‘t wait to see Sophia Coppola‘s screen adaptation. #Pantone2023 #PinkCosmos #Roll100 #Sharreadathon #20in4

I finished 1 of my month-long reads today. The first Norton Anthology of Native Nations poetry features 161 poets spanning from hundreds of years ago to the present, most of whom I would be interested in reading more work from. This is separated into 4 geographical regions following pre-state boundaries, and I was surprised to see how much more I connected with the poetry of regions I‘d lived in. #Pantone2023 #AiryBlue #Sharreadathon #20in4

I‘m excited about #20in4 starting tomorrow! My goal is to read 20 hours. I plan to finish The Custom of the Country and When the Light of the World Was Subdued Our Song Came Through. I‘d love to finish Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, but that doesn‘t seem likely, so I may pick up my next Nancy Drew just to have something light for a change. @Andrew65

Almost at the end of Book Second. How is your reading going? The end of today‘s chapter surprised me! I remembered the plot twist with the gendarmes, but not what happened after they left. I‘ve never seen an allusion in literature before to anyone except the devil buying souls! #LesMisCAD

#WeirdWords @CBee

Kugelblitz is used to mean ball lightning.

It‘s actually a theoretical astrophysical object predicted by general relativity. It‘s a concentration of heat, light or radiation so intense that its energy forms an event horizon & becomes self-trapped. In other words, if enough radiation is aimed into a region of space, the concentration of energy can warp spacetime so much that it creates a black hole.

Suet624 Wow! 5d
IndoorDame @Suet624 German has words for so many things English is just unspecific about! 5d
CBee Definitely not something I‘ve heard of! My husband probably knows what this is (maybe) - he still speaks some German so I‘ll have to ask him! 5d
See All 9 Comments
IndoorDame @CBee I hadn‘t heard of it either! I find lately when I hit French I can sort of guess what it might be, but when I hit German I just have to look it up. 5d
CBee @IndoorDame German is the weirdest language 😂 I‘ll ask him the word for something simple and he‘ll throw a multisyllabic word at me that sounds absolutely nothing like the English word 😂 5d
julesG @IndoorDame So not true. There are a lot of pretty precise words in English that need several words or a multisyllabic noun in German. 4d
julesG The fear of Kugelblitz is the reason my grandmother taught me to close all doors and windows when there's a thunderstorm and unplug all the appliances. 🙄 4d
IndoorDame @julesG so cool that your grandma taught you that! It‘s not a superstition I‘ve encountered before so I love hearing about it! And yes, I‘m not surprised that the reverse is true as well with the language. I don‘t know German so I haven‘t encountered those words, (I‘ve encountered lots of the others in translations), but I‘m not surprised to hear that they‘re there. Thank you for pointing that out to me. 4d

Did I understand ALL the science in this? No. But I actually understood almost all of it. The premise of explaining physics without any math was perfect for someone like me. I‘ve been buying a lot more books than usual lately (mostly used) so I‘m curious about everyone‘s habits.

I‘ve gradually shifted more from #2 to #1 over the past year and a half, and generally only indulge in #3 if it‘s something I don‘t have access to borrow.

Patchshank Im not much of a rereader so I'd say 2 and 3. 1w
Cazxxx All of the above! 1w
TheAromaofBooks I tend to be a strong 1, with a dabble in 2 haha However, any time I can get books for under about $2-3, I'm willing to give them a try - so I go on a BookOutlet binge from time to time and scavenge the library discard rack and yard sales. 😂 1w
See All 8 Comments
ImperfectCJ Mostly 1, a little 2, but I also buy books as part of Book Riot's Tailored Book Recommendations and (at least this month) for Aardvark Book Club. I used to only buy books if I couldn't get them from the library, if I wanted to write in them, or if I wanted them on my shelves always, but lockdown shifted my habits and I haven't shifted back yet. 1w
EclecticBookLover Somewhere between 1 & 2. I do re-read some favorites often and when the old strikes so it‘s easier to have them on hand so I‘m ready when the mood strikes me. I also own a lot of biographies because I like the way they look, mostly actors and musicians I like, but I‘m not likely to go back and read them. Number 3 comes into play with used books and digital sales. 1w
wanderinglynn All of the above! I‘m an eclectic buyer. Although I tend to keep books that are either from my fave authors or ones I want to rereads. 1w
eeclayton With print books, I'm mostly #2. With ebooks, I tend to be a bit more adventurous, esp. when I find something I'm interested in in the sales. 1w

I was surprised by how quiet the tone of this was and how lovely the writing style - it made for a marked contrast with the sensationalized case it‘s based on and the gritty themes. I have great respect for Margret Atwood as a writer but just as often hate her books as I do love them, which has kept me from reading as much of her back catalogue as I‘d like. I‘m glad I decided it was time to read this one, it definitely fell in the love it camp.

dabbe @IndoorDame My husband once fried one on the hood of our car when it was over 115 degrees. We usually have summer stories about all the weird places people have tried to fry an egg, and concrete is usually one of them. Mind you: it needs to sit there for a wee while, but eventually, you can at least get one sunnyside up, with whatever else comes with it (dirt, gravel ... 🤣). Frozen pizza sorta works, too. 😀 (edited) 1w

Most of my reading materials come from the library. I adore my local library system! It‘s a consortium of 41 individual libraries any of which you can visit in person or request materials from through interlibrary loan. Most of the branches are working hard to remove barriers to access with policies like abolishing fees, and new programs like a “library of things” where you can check out anything from cooking equipment to electronics to art.

julieclair Love the “library of things” concept! 1w
IndoorDame @julieclair me too! It just makes sense to have community resources like that. I really hope that‘s one project that takes off and expands! 1w
julieclair I agree! I would love to have a program like that at my local library. In fact, about a year ago I participated in a focus group being held by our library, asking what kind of services we‘d like them to offer. If I had known of this idea then, I definitely would have mentioned it. (edited) 1w

I can‘t believe we have to wait an entire month until our next letter! Reading this in real time really underscores how fast our lives are now compared with so many of the stories we read, in a way that less immersive reading experiences never quite have. #Clarissa @Lcsmcat

I don‘t want to say too much about this because #SundayBuddyRead folks aren‘t discussing it until the end of the month. Overall it was a low pick for me. I think if it had been written by someone else I would‘ve enjoyed the reading experience & not thought too deeply about it, but I ADORE Simone St. James, so I had extremely high expectations. It included some funny scenes & some spooky ones, but I don‘t think novella is her format. #JoyousJanuary

Andrew65 I‘m not a great fan of novellas, not enough space to develop the plot. Well done 👏👏👏 (edited) 2w
