#12Booksof2024 August
I read or heard an interview with Arden somewhere that this book came about when she started thinking about how this time period changed so many of our perceptions of the world and she decided to write about how it might have changed our perception of the devil. I deal with WWII a lot for work and the idea of this - the devil finding a new calling in WWI France - really spoke to me.

Andrew65 Sounds a very interesting read. 3d

August saw 3 5⭐️ books for me and obviously a Kim Stone binge! 😂😂 But IMO if you‘re going to binge, it‘s hard to beat Kim. 🩷 Her Dying Truth case was an especially heartbreaking one to get through.

However I‘m going to pick the tagged book as my favorite as it had all the feels and felt more like an epic than a regular novel. Not great ratings here on Litsy, but I really enjoyed it.

A Deadly Scandal was a great addition to a fave series.

Andrew65 A brilliant series that it‘s easy to get lost in. 3d

This was a two month read, began during my July vacation and finished in August. Written in three sections, some was more interesting than others, but overall an engrossing read. #1001Books

A book I admired more than I enjoyed it. I‘m cheating a bit here. I started it in August, but didn‘t actually finish until October. It‘s quite long! I am surprised, however that this is not as well known as Ulysses or Mrs Dalloway, because it is a really good example of modernism.

Andrew65 A good choice. 4d

Pickpick

This is my final completed read of the year and it was a great one. Storm of Steel is a straightforward description of trench warfare in WWI from a German soldier who was wounded multiple times and continued to return to the front until the 7th time after 4 years of fighting. He seldom shirks away from the violence and gore of the battle, yet also expresses respect for the skill of the enemy.

Daisey This book was also a recommendation from a student with a strong interest in history. #StudentRecommendation

🎧 📖 I combined listening to Basil Creightons‘s translation with reading sections of Michael Hoffman‘s translation.

#12booksof2024 @andrew65 My June choice was this story two young men in the first world War. Graphic in its portrayal of the horrors of men barely out of school experiencing war but tender in its picture of a forbidden love.

Cathythoughts Lovely. I have this one , must get to it. 6d

Wow! Totally worth the hype :) I prefer her more recent works but this was riveting and I really enjoyed the #audiobook . Great palate cleanser from all the holiday stories. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Finished my 8th #10BeforetheEnd book.

This is a short novel which finishes in a very different tone than the mocking one with which it starts. Written during and published just after WWI , it‘s about the horror and futility of war but also the very human ability to see only what one wants to see, until the scales from one‘s eyes are forcibly removed. Still relevant.

LeahBergen I‘ll have to get to this one soon! 2w
andrew61 Sounds very good. I have it on my limited shelf of persephones. I'll aim to read it in 2025. 2w
Caryl I read this years ago and I really liked it. I was thinking recently it was time for a re-read. 💖 2w

Ruthiella @LeahBergen I hope you find it as interesting I did! 2w
Ruthiella @andrew61 My collection of Persephone editions is also quite small. I‘ll be interested in your thoughts on this. 2w
Ruthiella @Caryl It would make for an interesting re-visit, I think, considering the books topic and knowing its outcome. 2w

Not my usual Christmas fluff that I read this time of year but a wonderful historical fiction novel with a Christmas backdrop. Written in epistolary form, this story will have you cheering for the characters and reaching for the tissues!
