This is a story about a boy that rides the bus with his grandma every sunday, but one Sunday, he starts to ask questions like “why dont we have a car?” And “why dont I have an IPad like my friends?”. During the bus ride, his grandmother responds with encouraging answers and shows him the fun in their routine every Sunday.

This is a RF RA Pura Belprè honor book and a great book for ESOL students. A girls grandmother comes to live with her family in the city from far away where she had parrots and palm trees. The problem is, they cannot understand each other because they speak different languages. They get to know each other‘s languages and the girl gets her Grandmother a parrot, named mango, to remind her of her home.

The One and Only Ivan is a F LCNewberry award-winning novel. This is an amazing story about a gorilla named Ivan who was so comfortable living behind glass and being watched by humans all the time. Then Ruby, an elephant who was taken from her family, comes along and changes everything for Ivan. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and ESOL strategy 2 to promote small group discussions about the critical features, big ideas, and relationships.

The Story of Ferdinand is a F RA picture book written by Munro Leaf and illustrated by Robert Lawson. This is a book about a bull named Ferdinand, who would rather sit and smell the flowers than fight like everyone else. I would use UDL principle 9.3 to develop self-assessment and reflection. I would also use ESOL strategy 2 to promote cooperation. I would discuss with the students if you would be like Ferdinand or the other bulls. #ucflae3414f17

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a P AS book written by Shel Silverstein. I feel like everyone should have this book! Where the Sidewalk Ends is filled with heart-warming poems and drawings. Its hard to find just one UDL principle and ESOL strategy for all of the poems. I would chooseUDL principle 3.2 to highlight patterns, big ideas, and critical features. ESOL strategy 6 would be best because poems can be a little tricky to comprehend.

This is a classic F RApicture bookby Esphyr Slobodkina. This is a story about a peddler selling caps and tricky monkeys. This book is a great RA I think everyone should have in their classroom library. I would use UDL principle 2.3 and ESOL strategy 30 to identify and connect with math. I would use the different colored hats to create addition and subtraction math problems. Diagrams and drawings would help to visualize the addition or subtraction.

The True Story Of The 3 Little Pigs is a TL S picture book written by Jon Scieszka. This story tells the story of the 3 little pigs, but from the wolf‘s side of the story. I would choose UDL principle 3.1 and ESOL strategy 30 to use compare and contrast between the original vs the wolf‘s story of the 3 little pigs.

Players in Pigtails is a HF RA picture book written by Shana Corey. This book is about the rising of women‘s role in baseball during the war, and how that made a big impact on how girls were viewed back when no one thought women could play sports. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and esol strategy 50 to learn more about women‘s suffrage in America.

National Geographic Kids: Rocks and minerals is a great NF IR to have in a classroom library. Having all of the National Geographic Kids books would be an essential to my classroom library. I would use UDL principle 3.1 to try to connect with background knowledge about rocks and minerals. I would also use that background knowledge to build upon by connecting it with a lesson(ESOL strategy 4) with this book as support. #ucflae3414f17

Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes is a great F RA picture book that everyone should have in their classroom library. Pete walks through strawberries, blueberries, mud, and water, which ruins his white shoes. But Pete keeps on walking along and singing his song because its all good! I would use UDL principle 9.3 and ESOL strategy 3 to show that things may go wrong in life but do we cry? Goodness no!

Because of Winn-Dixie is a F LC Newberry Award winning novel by Kate DiCamillo. This is a heartwarming novel about a little girl who is new to Naomi, Florida who finds a stray dog and names him Winn-Dixie. Little does she know, Winn-Dixie becomes her bestfriend and teaches her so many lessons about life. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and ESOL strategy 30 to highlight relationships in the text and maybe relate them to their own.#ucflae3414f17

This book is a Biography written by Mordicai Gerstein! This Caldecott award winner would be a great RA. Its about a man who is a daredevil but i guess wanted a bit more of a challenge, so he decided to careful plan walking in between the twin towers. I would use UDL principle 3.1 to give them an introduction of what the twin towers. I would also use esol strategy 29 an supply to students with different informational resources on the twin towers.

One of my favorite books! “The Polar Express” is a Caldecott award winner and a F RAbook writtenby Chris Van Allsburg. This is about a boy who boards a mysterious train that takes him all the way to the north pole! Thisis a great RA to read near the holidays. I would use UDL principle 9.1 because it shows to stay true to what you believe in. I would also use ESOL strategy 4 to connect this story to knowledge of what they believe in. #ucflae3414f17

“Dont let the pigeon drive the bus” is a F RA Cadlecott award-winner. This is about a bus driver that asks you to watch his bus and not to let the pigeon drive. The rest of the book is the pigeon trying to convince the reader to let it drive. I would use UDL principle 7.1 to highlight their choices. I would also use esol strategy 2 to encourage small group discussions of why they would or wouldn‘t let the pigeon drive.

Press here is a really fun New York Times bestseller fiction RAbook by Hervé Tullet! The story is 100% interactive and really helps with folllowing directions and listening skills. I would UDL principle 8.4 because this book is mostly about listening but a big part of it is also the feedback that we can receive from it. I would use ESOL strategy 14 because this book requires alot of directions that may be difficult for the student the first time.

This is a great RF RA book to by Jason Chin to have in your classroom library. A boy finds an abandoned book about redwoods, he soon finds out about the strange things that happened when she reads the book. He learns all about the redwoods by jumping through the jurassic period, roman empire, and redwoods itself. I would use UDL principle 2.1 andESOL strategy 5 to help with challenging vocabulary #ucflae3414f17

Where the wild things are is a classic F RA picture book written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. This Cadlecott award winner is a story of a boy named Max who was sent to his room and this imagination grew, and grew into a forrest where the wild things lived. The wild things loved Max, they made him their king and did everything together. The UDL guideline i would choose for this book is 1.1 and ESOL strategy 2 to promote students‘ imagination.

The book with no pictures is a F RA book and New York Times Bestseller, written by B.J. Novak. This explains how a book with no pictures can be no fun at all, until you read on. It continues with silly comments like “boo boo butt” that the reader HAS to say because thats the rule of a book! I would use UDL guideline 7.1 because this book can be a fun way for students to get creative. I would use ESOL strategy 16 to integrate their creativity.

A wrinkle in time is a SF LCnovel byMadeleine L'engle and also a Newberry award winner. It's a book about three children: Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin, who go through time and space to find their father with a little help from Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Witch. I would use UDL guidline 1.3 because this book has a lot of details that are really important with visualization of what is read. I would also use ESOL strategy 17 #ucflae3414f17
