Everyone knows and loves the Magic school bus! This SF book would make a great RA before teaching a science lesson about water. This book is about a class that is learning about water and then a young girl named Wanda suggest they visit Waterland and the one and only Ms. Frizzle got a got a funny look in her eyes but was up for it! I️ would use the ESOL strategy 13 by reviewing what the lesson is about. The UDL Guideline 3.1 would would be useful.

WendyP I️ would use the UDL guideline by giving key vocabulary and also review background knowledge before reading and after reading. A useful website is https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/magic-school-b... it provides full lesson plans to teach all about the water cycle! 6y

This TL novel is a Newbery Honor book and would make a great GR book in the classroom. The book is about a pig named Wilbur that was born a ring and the owner decided he was going to kill him since he thought he had no use, but his daughter Fern, begged him not to do so. The father decided to let Fern keep Wilbur as a pet and the two of them began a journey together! A great ESOL strategy that I️ would use in the classroom is #9.

WendyP I️ would use this esol strategy by first teaching how to take notes for the first chapter or two then after that kids are expected to take notes after each chapter. The UDL guideline that I️ would use is 2.5 by showing the movie when we are done reading the book. #ucflae3414f17 6y
MakennaK This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. That's a good idea to show the movie after the students are done with the book and have them compare. I would definitely do that in my classroom! 6y
EricaG I love your idea to show the movie after reading the book! You could use it to compare and contrast the book with the movie. 6y
WendyP A useful website would be https://www.factmonster.com/take-quiz/charlottes-web this is a quiz for students to take that could help the teacher determine how much the students have learned while reading. 6y

This humorous F PB is a Caldecott Award winner written and illustrated by Mo Willems. This book would be great to use for S, it has humor that kids will love. The book is about a Pigeon who really wants to drive a bus, so when the bus driver gets off the bus the pigeon thinks that it‘s the perfect time to start driving, but before the driver gets off he tells us all to not let the pigeon drive the bus! I would use the UDL guideline 7.3.

WendyP For the ESOL strategy, I believe number 1 would work best if used prior to reading the book. A website that I found useful provides activities and posters. I actually found this website from another classmate who used it on their Glog, http://pigeonpresents.com/get-busy/#pp-series-the-pigeon. 6y
DrSpalding Wendy, I am so impressed that you used resources after having witnessed your peers author study presentation. This resource is excellent as are Willem's books! 6y

The Dot | Peter Reynolds
post image

This F PB written and illustrated by Peter Reynolds is about a young girl who believes she can‘t draw and doubts herself but her teacher inspires her and tells her to “just make a mark”. This story would make a great RA and encourage students to try their best and be themselves. He ESOL strategy that I would use is number 3 and have kids talk with each other and show positive thinking with classmates.

WendyP The UDL guideline 9.3 is useful for having students asses and reflect on their own thoughts or drawings and also include the ESOL strategy here to promote positive thinking. The following website provides a lesson plan, video and activities that can be used when reading this book. http://mrswillskindergarten.com/dot-lesson-plans-fun-classroom-activities/ h #ucflae3414f17 6y
HNager I love this book, awesome book to read aloud to kids. I love the science part of the activity, with the students making a hypothesis. 6y

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo is a F novel that would be a great if used in a LC. This book is about a girl and a dog that she meets inside of a Winn Dixie and she keeps him and decides to name him Winn Dixie. I love this book and knowing that the Author is from Florida and has grown up close to where I live is very interesting to know. I would use ESOL strategy 43 and have the students underline key ideas that could help them summarize.

WendyP The UDL guideline that I think would be useful is 1.3. I would have students watch the movie with their LC after reading the book so they can compare and contrast. This book is a Newbery Honor book and also a Parents Choice Gold award winner. A website that I found to be useful is https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/m/?s=book-because-of-winn-dixie.html it provides worksheets and useful vocabulary for the students. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This F PB written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond would make be great for S or an AS. Laura has written many children‘s books that kids love such as: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. This book is about a mouse who goes to school and asks for one item then continues to ask for more things throughout the day. I would use the ESOL strategy 10 by having students work in pairs and compare notes about the Author after reading.

WendyP The UDL guideline that I would use is 3.2. by helping students determine the big ideas while working on an AS. The website that I found useful provides a worksheet for kids to do while reading this book. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/If-You-Take-a-Mouse-to-School-Cut-Pa... 6y

This adorable F picture book would make a great RA and teaches students to always remain positive even when things don‘t go their way. This NYTBS was written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean. It is about a cat who starts the day off with four buttons on his shirt but as the day goes on he loses one at a time but doesn‘t let it bother him and he continues to stay positive.

WendyP I would use ESOL strategy 17 by using facial expressions, hand gestures and showing the video of the book being read. The UDL guideline that I would use is 1.2 by showing the video of the author reading the text. A useful website that I found provided many lesson plans that can be used with this book! https://www.kindergartenworks.com/filing-cabinet/pete-the-cat-lesson-plans/ #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
ChristinB This story is so cute! I love all the Pete the cat books. The link you have also has a lot of great resources. I hope to be able to use this in my classroom one day 6y

This RF PB would would make a perfect RA to your own children or students, it is a very sweet story about a mother‘s love for her child as he grows older. I would use the UDL guideline 3.2 by pointing out the repetition that occurs in the book. I would also use the ESOL strategy 14 and slow down my speech so that all learners can comprehend the text. The website provided will take you to a video that will read aloud the book and also show images.

Jaquessial This book is so good. I omg it too my little boy every night. Turns out I bought it twice. 6y

Seedfolks | Paul Fleischman
post image

Seedfolks is a RF Golden Kite award winning book by Paul Fleishman. This novel is perfect for grades 4-8 and would make a great IR or PR. I read this book in my RED class and fell in love with it, the story is about a little girl who looses her father before she was born and the only way she knows how to connect with him is by planting seeds, so she begins to do so and slowly the entire neighborhood joins her.

WendyP I would use ESOL strategy 44 and would have students predict the different characters just by the way they look on the first page of the chapter. I would also have hem compare characters and then summarize each character after reading a chapter. With the UDL guideline 9.3, I would have students self-asses when summarizing the chapter. A link that I found useful is one from scholastic, it will take you to a lesson plan. 6y
DrSpalding This author is a multi award-winning author! Who was your RED professor? Excellent resource! 6y

Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes | Eric Litwin, James Dean
post image

This F PB written by Eric Litwin and Illustrated by James Dean would make a great book for any classroom library and would make an awesome RA to students. It‘s all about a cat who starts off with white shoes but as his day goes on he steps in all sorts of stuff, but instead of letting it ruin his day he just keeps going. This teaches students to not let one small thing determine your attitude for the day and instead look on the bright side.

WendyP http://www.teachertube.com/mobile/video/pete-the-cat-i-love-my-white-shoes-youtu... I found this website useful because it provides a fun video that can be played before or after reading the book and can help students become engaged in reading this fun silly book that teaches a great lesson! I would use the ESOL strategy 29 by providing students with the link and also several other links that they could use at home to refer back to. 6y
WendyP The UDL guideline that I would use is 1.2/1.3 by playing the video in the link above, this would allow students to see and hear the book after I have already read it to them. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
DrSpalding I think you are the first to cite teacher tube! Utilizing this website, helps ALL students. 6y

This F PB by Dr.Seuss is a Caldecott award winning book and would make a great AS for students. This book teaches students to not give up and to always stick with your ideas even if people doubt you. The UDL guideline that I would use is 9.1 by setting expectations for students before they begin working on their author study with Dr. Seuss. I would also use the ESOL Strategy 6, to make sure students are comprehending while completing the author

WendyP Study. A useful link is http://m.seussville.com, it will take you to Dr.Seuss website and has several interactive games, videos and books for students to use. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This is my all time favorite book! This Outstanding Book Award Winner by Shel Silverstein is P and would make the perfect IR or RT. Their are tons of poems to choose from, all of which include humor that children can relate to. http://www.shelsilverstein.com/learning/, this link will take you to Shel Silverstein‘s website which has worksheets, lesson plans and activities that you can use to celebrate Poetry month.

WendyP A useful UDL Strategy that I would use is 1.3/1.2 and I would show the video of “Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me Too” which reads the poem to you and also shows a video. I would also do this when using ESOL strategy 17. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

I would use the ESOL strategy # 14 but talking slower and clearer so that all

Seasons change and they still hear nothing, until one day the mail man brings a letter that informs the little girl and her grandmother that she will be home soon.

This B PB is a Caldecott winner and was written and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein. This book would make a great RA around 9/11 to talk about the Twin Towers. The book is about a guy named Philippe Petit who was a well known street performer, one day he looked up and saw two buildings side by side and thought it would be a great idea to walk on his rope between the two towers. WendyP Did, it caused lots of attention. The police warned him to get down but he refused but when he was finally done, he was quickly arrested but instead of being put in jail he was sentenced to perform in the park for the children! Out of My Mind | Sharon M. Draper
post image

Out of my Mind by Sharon M Draper is a RF novel that has been on the NYTBS. The book is about the journey of a young girl named Melody who has Cerebral Palsy and she can‘t speak or control her body which has forced her to be in a wheelchair. Many people judge her and think that since she can‘t speak then she must not be smart, but really she is brilliant and it all starts to show when she gets a machine that helps her communicate.

WendyP This book is a MUST READ for ages 12+ and would make a great LC book. UDL principle 6.1 would be useful and ESOL strategy #9 by teaching note-taking skills that could be helpful in the LC. The following link will take you to a video of the book trailer, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nCG6e2DifxY 7y

Rosie Revere, Engineer | Andrea Beaty
post image

Rosie Revere Engineer written by Andrea Beaty and Illustrated by David Roberts is a NYTBS RF picture book and would be a perfect RA in the classroom. This book is about a young girl who dreamed of becoming an engineer but failed and let down her uncle and then began to give up on her goals. Her aunt Rose comes around at the perfect time and reminds Rosie of how smart she is and to not give up because “The only true failure can come if you quit”.

WendyP The UDL guideline that I would use for this book would be 2.1 and 6.1. As the teacher, I would start by discussing key vocabulary and going over definitions that are in the book that the students may not know, such as “perplexed” and “dismayed”. I would use 6.1 and have students set goals for themselves and remind them that they can be anything that they want to be. The ESOL strategy that I would use is number 5 and a useful website for this book 7y

Monster‘s New Undies written by the award-winning author Samantha Berger and illustrated by Tad Carpenter is F picture book that would be great for Kindergarten age students and best used as a RA or S. It offers LOTS of humor that kids will love and enjoy and will make a awesome book for your classroom library. The UDL I would use for this reading is 3.1 by asking students if they have ever had to do something they didn‘t want to do

WendyP But once completing the task, it ended up not being so bad. We would then begin reading the book and the children could relate the text to our conversation. I would use the ESOL Strategies #4 and once again have students talk about prior knowledge on things they have had to do and didn‘t want to do at the beginning. The website provided will take you to a brief overview of the book (edited) 7y

Wonder | R. J. Palacio
post image

Wonder is RF and has been voted a NYTBS, this book would be excellent for IR or LC. Auggie was born with a facial deformity that has prevented him from attending school therefore he has always been homeschooled. In 5th grade, his parents decided to introduce him to a school called Beecher Prep where he was now the new kid. Although Auggie is just like every other 5th grader he was often made fun of due to his extraordinary face.

WendyP UDL 1.3 could be used to help those students who may not be able to fully understand and you could show the movie or clips of the movie so that these children can grasp a better understanding. The EL strategy number 10 could be used to have students think, pair and share about how they think Auggie would feel in the situations he has been put in. The link below will take you to the official movie trailer that will give an explanation about the 7y
