The book is based on a true story about a girl who was stranded on an island and must survive on her own. It's a great book about strength and survival. Charlotte's Web, written by E.B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams, is a classic F book that received the Newbery Honor award. It's about a pig named Wilbur who is saved by a girl named Fern and forms new friendships. This is a wonderful story that every student should read at least once. The Rainbow Fish, written and illustrated by Marcus Pfister, is a F book that would be great for RT. The book is about a fish with beautiful scales that the other fish wish they had. When the rainbow fish seeks advice on how to be happy, they are advised to share their scales with the other fish. Through doing this, the rainbow fish made many friends and became happy. The Three Pigs written and illustrated by David Wiesner is a great version of the TL Three Little Pigs and is a 2002 Caldecott Medal winner that I'd use for a RA. The book starts the same as you'd expect but quickly turns into a twist to escape the big bad wolf by leaving the book. Wonder written by R.J. Palacio is a RF NYTBS about a boy named August (Auggie), who was born with a facial deformity. The book is written in multiple perspectives of those in Auggie's life as he goes through his first year of public school. It's a beautiful book that really gets your emotions invested. The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a F NYTBS and a Newbery Award winner. It's a good book for LC or IR. The book is about a witch named Xan who raises a baby named Luna who she accidentally feeds moonlight which enmagics her. The town from which Luna comes from believes Xan is an evil witch, when they come face to face it's a powerful fight between good and evil. #ucflae3414f17

Who Was Abraham Lincoln? is a B book written by Janet Pascal and illustrated by John O'Brien and would be a good book for IR. The book goes into detail about the life of Abraham Lincoln including useful illustrations and a timeline at the end.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat written and illustrated by Simms Taback is a TL book that won the Caldecott Medal in 2000 and would be a great book for storytelling. It's about a man who owns an overcoat that becomes old and worn so he turns it into a jacket which also becomes old and worn so he turns it into a vest. The entire story is changing the clothing item from one thing to another as it gets old and worn. #ucflae3414f17

Rosa written by Nikki Giovanni and illustrated by Bryan Collier is a Caldecott Honor B book about Rosa Parks that would work well as a RA. I would read this book during Black History Month and tie it into a lesson on the civil rights movement and U.S. history. #ucflae3414f17

Animal Poems written by Valerie Worth and illustrated by Steve Jenkins is a great P book to use for teaching students about poetry and animals as a RA. Each page has beautiful illustrations and a poem about an animal. The poems are mature for elementary school and can make students critically think about their meaning. #ucflae3414f17

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers is a B picture book written and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein and is a well deserved Caldecott winner. This would be a great book for a RA or S. The book is about a real man named Philippe Petit who walked between the twin towers on a thin rope in 1974. Olivia written and illustrated by Ian Falconer is a Caldecott Honor F book that would be good as a RA. It follows a little girl (who is a pig) named Olivia who is "very good at wearing people out." We get a glimpse of her daily life and relationship with her family. It has a very cute closing statement!
The illustrations are fun and engaging. Students will be able to connect to some of the things Olivia does in the book. #ucflae3414f17

Grace for President written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Leuyen Pham is a RF NYTBS and a great book for a RA. It's a story about a girl named Grace who realizes the country has never had a girl president before and it makes her want to become the first. The One and Only Ivan written by Katherine Applegate and illustrated by Patricia Castelao is a F book that won the Newbery Award. The book follows a gorilla named Ivan who lives in a mall and is content with it until a baby elephant is added to the mall's zoo and changes his perspective on everything. This NF Caldecott honor book by Steve Jenkins would be great for a RA. On one page, you are shown just one part of various animals, and on the next page, you are told what these animals do with that body part. It's a great informational text that even taught me many things! At the end of the book it goes into more detail about each animal.
