Pickpick

The Polar Express written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a F Caldecott Medal winner. The book follows a boy who stopped believing in Santa until he boards a train to the North Pole and is taken on a magical journey to believing. I would use this book for a RA around Christmas time. #ucflae3414f17

JuliaMurra I would show the movie after reading the book to students. https://thisreadingmama.com/polar-express-comprehension-sort-book-movie/
This link provides a comparison activity between the book and movie, this would be a great comprehension activity. This would align with UDL 2.5 illustrate through multiple media by playing the movie, and EL 45 using Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities by comparing and contrasting the movie and book.
6y
SarahWynne A favorite of mine! Love the use of Venn diagram to c&c the book and movie! 6y
CaseyL I love this movie and I have the book on my Christmas list! I think a comparison activity is always important when showing a movie that goes along with a book. I really like that you aligned the EL principle to this activity! 6y

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell is a HF Newbery Award winner that would work well for CR. The book is based on a true story about a girl who was stranded on an island and must survive on her own. It's a great book about strength and survival. I remember reading this in 5th grade and it evoked many emotions back then as well. #ucflae3414f17

Charlotte's Web, written by E.B. White and illustrated by Garth Williams, is a classic F book that received the Newbery Honor award. It's about a pig named Wilbur who is saved by a girl named Fern and forms new friendships. This is a wonderful story that every student should read at least once. I would use this book for IR or a LC. #ucflae3414f17

JuliaMurra https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/unit-plans/teaching-content/charlottes-web-t...
Scholastic has a few lesson plans and activities that can be used for this book. Through utilizing the comic strip activity, this would align with UDL 9.3 develop self-assessment and reflection because they are creating their own retelling and reflecting on it after sharing it with a classmate.
6y
JuliaMurra It would also align with EL 44 focus on thinking skills by predicting, categorizing, sequencing and summarizing during the book and activity. 6y
CaseyL I have this book sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. I read it in elementary school but I can‘t wait to refresh my memory. I really like the comic strip activity that you noted and the way that you aligned the UDL and EL principles. 6y

When the rainbow fish seeks advice on how to be happy, they are advised to share their scales with the other fish. Through doing this, the rainbow fish made many friends and became happy. This is a good lesson about sharing. #ucflae3414f17

JuliaMurra https://spaldinglae3414.wikispaces.com/file/view/Rainbow+Fish+RT+Wolfe+SU17.doc
I found this RT script on Dr. Spalding's wiki site! This would be a fun and interactive way to share this book. This would align with UDL 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information as well as 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships due to the theme of the book.

The Three Pigs written and illustrated by David Wiesner is a great version of the TL Three Little Pigs and is a 2002 Caldecott Medal winner that I'd use for a RA. The book starts the same as you'd expect but quickly turns into a twist to escape the big bad wolf by leaving the book. This is a good book for making text-to-text connections with other TL. #ucflae3414f17

The town from which Luna comes from believes Xan is an evil witch, when they come face to face it's a powerful fight between good and evil. #ucflae3414f17

JuliaMurra https://suzyred.com/The-Girl-Who-Drank-the-Moon.html This resource has dozens of worksheets available and fun activities including a jeopardy game. It focuses a lot on vocabulary which is great because the book has many higher leveled vocabulary. This would align with UDL 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols and EL 23 structure advance organizers consisting for new terminology that learners will encounter in the new lesson vocabulary to be reviewed. 6y

The entire story is changing the clothing item from one thing to another as it gets old and worn. #ucflae3414f17

JuliaMurra This would be a great book for storytelling through a felt board. http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/lessons/lesson.asp?ID=2046 This is a great lesson on different cultures that includes fun and informational activities. I would use this and the book to teach sequencing. This lesson gives the opportunity to incorporate social studies and language arts. This NF Caldecott honor book by Steve Jenkins would be great for a RA. On one page, you are shown just one part of various animals, and on the next page, you are told what these animals do with that body part. JuliaMurra Using this lesson plan http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/60536 I would choose EL 2 promoting cooperation in both small groups and partnered pairs.
