So here's what was hiding under that brown paper. Gotta love libraries that do events like this. So fun, and a great way to commemorate Black History Month (which is apparently being recognized officially in Alberta for the first time ever this year... baby steps...) But anyways, this looks amazing. I can't wait to read it!

I may be a "lazy fuck" who just listened to the audiobook, but this was a great experience! It's not a memoir or a deep look at Aziz Ansari's personal life, but had a ton of fascinating yet somewhat depressing insights into dating in the modern world. Plus Ansari writes like he talks, so there were plenty of hilarious tidbits throughout!

Just finished the audiobook for Amy Poehler's amazing memoir. Can't recommend this highly enough! Just so phenomenal and engaging, with so many awesome guest stars... Like Patrick Stewart reading a poem about plastic surgery. If that doesn't convince you to pick up this audiobook right now, I don't know what will. 😂👍

Heideschrampf WHAT!? Had I known he did that on the audio I wouldn't have bought the print. #knope2020 8y
PatriciaTina It's definitely a memorable performance! You should see if your library has a copy, I have the eBook but I listened through hoopla. 8y

Doing some reading in the sauna after work. About halfway through at this point, but it's due at the library today so I have to finish it tonight. So good so far, the hype is warranted!

RebeccasReading I think you're close to the point where you can't put it down anymore, so it should be ready to go back tomorrow! 8y

Another great book in the series. I have to admit I liked Bitten a bit better, but Stolen was still pretty awesome and kept me interested throughout. I might have to take a break just to finish some library books, but I'll definitely be back to the series soon!

The Boy Is Back | Meg Cabot
Panpan

Okay, what happened to Meg Cabot? I grew up with her. I loved and still love a lot of her work, especially the "Boy" and "Mediator" series'. But, just like with Remembrance, I'm left incredibly disappointed with this book. Maybe it's the curse of the sequel, but she's never left me feeling so annoyed and disconnected with a story so far. I guess I'll just have to hope for the best with whatever she does next... ??

I just could not get into this. I'm not sure if it was a timing issue or actually the book itself, but I couldn't connect with any of the characters and constantly felt like there was something missing that left me lost. 😔

Another great novel from Margaret Atwood finished! I have to admit that I liked this one a bit better than Oryx and Crake, but both were really interesting.
On another note though, I'm starting to feel like I'm reading way too much depressing stuff for school this term. I can't wait to read some happier stuff on Christmas break!

This was an important and relevant novel, tackling issues like consumeristic culture, environmental pollution, and what should be done about the poison and loss of many animals' natural habitats. Definitely gives you a lot to think about!

I feel like a horrible Canadian for saying this, but this was only the second Atwood novel I've read so far. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am now kicking myself for taking so long to get started on her enormous repertoire. If you're looking for a wonderfully original and beautifully written dystopia, this is the novel for you! 👍🇨🇦❤️

Reagan I read this trilogy this year, and it was my first Atwood as well! Terrible Canadians! It was my secret Canadian shame. Loved these books. 8y
susanw This trilogy is the only Atwood I've read. We should start a shameful Canadian club, it used to totally embarrass me that I had never read her. 8y
PatriciaTina Haha I know, they're great books but I've always been a bit nervous to start on any of her work because I never knew which one would be best as an intro. Embarrassingly enough though all the ones I've read so far have been for my university classes. 😟 better late than never though I guess! Shameful Canadian club sounds like an awesome plan, haha. I feel like there are a lot more of us in similar situations. We can all be embarrassed together! 8y

I had the amazing honour of meeting Colson Whitehead this past Friday at the Vancouver writers fest and he signed my copy of The Underground Railroad! He's such an amazing writer and wonderfully hilarious speaker, if you ever get the chance to see him make sure you do. You won't be disappointed!

On another note, if anyone can decipher what he wrote there beside the title I'd be eternally grateful! 😂

Here's my possibly (probably) unreasonable novel reading goal for the week! I'm seeing Colson Whitehead on Friday at the Vancouver Writer's Fest and haven't had a chance to read or pick up The Underground Railroad yet, so I couldn't resist when I saw it on the "hits to go" display at the library today. And of course the obligatory school reading, Thomas King's The Back of the Turtle. Both look super interesting, now I just need some time! ???

This book was amazing. Roxane Gay brings up so many important issues and topics that need to be discussed more often, and I'll definitely be getting my own copy sometime soon so I can force it on all my friends, and read it myself again and again! There are so many great quotes, but I'll leave you with this one. I get so much side-eye and hate from people in my own life for being a feminist, so I can definitely relate. Spot on, Ms. Gay! 👍👏❤️🌟

This book reminded me at times of Paper Towns, but overall it was one of the most original books I've read in a long time. It's not action packed, but it's still incredibly interesting, entertaining, and highly recommend!

This book was much darker than I expected, and hugely different from other books I've read by Babiak. Nevertheless, it was a beautifully written novel about a father who is trying to find out the reasons behind his daughter's death, politician neighbours' murder, and the subsequent disappearance of his wife.

Fair warning though, if you read this book you may never look at a vegetable peeler the same way again. 😬

Mehso-so

Started and finished this within and hour. It's a quick and mostly entertaining look at what could happen if America went to war against Canada, but I feel like it would have worked much better as a longer series. As a miniseries, the story ended up feeling rushed to the point of being somewhat unbelievable, and missed out on a lot of potential incisive social commentary.

Pickpick

There has been a lot of hype surrounding this release, and I must say it deserves it. This graphic novel is amazing. Relevant, powerful, and unbelievably important. We need to talk more about the issues presented here, we need to find a way to reconcile. This will not solve everything, but mainstream representations of the lingering issues faced by aboriginal people such as the one found in this novel are a start. Read it. Listen. Learn.
