Modern Romance
Modern Romance: An Investigation | Aziz Ansari
A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation's most popular and sharpest comedic voicesAt some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it's wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated? Some of our problems are unique to our time. "Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?" "Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods? Combos?!" "My girlfriend just got a message from some dude named Nathan. Who's Nathan? Did he just send her a photo of his penis? Should I check just to be sure?" But the transformation of our romantic lives can't be explained by technology alone. In a short period of time, the whole culture of finding love has changed dramatically. A few decades ago, people would find a decent person who lived in their neighbourhood. Their families would meet and, after deciding neither party seemed like a murderer, they would get married and soon have a kid, all by the time they were twenty-four. Today, people marry later than ever and spend years of their lives on a quest to find the perfect person, a soul mate. For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but forModern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analysed behavioural data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world's leading social scientists, including Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humour book we've seen before. In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humour with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.

This month has been…a lot. Work was crazy, then I got sick and missed 2 1/2 days (I NEVER call in sick), so when I got back it was even crazier.
But, as of 5:08pm yesterday, I‘m DONE with work in 2023 (*happy dance!*)!!!! Now I‘ve got nothing but time for reading, Litsy-ing, and being a productive member of the #WinterGames #SnowflakeSquad.
The tagged book is my #Bookspin, and The Black Moth is my #Doublespin.

⭐️⭐️⭐️I listened to the audiobook, the author was speaking too fast. I did enjoy some parts of the book but I wouldn‘t suggest it, maybe if I knew the comedian I would have enjoyed the book.

This book was ok. It was a little different because Ansari was reporting on social and love research, but he sprinkled in his humor with a lot of cussing which caught me off guard. I stuck with this, but I‘m not sure I would recommend it.

I really should read what the book is about before I read it. This is one of those books I heard was good and I like the author so I shelved it tbr. Maybe this book was good when it first came out but I learned nothing from this book and it was nothing of what I thought it was going to be about. Disappointes but its totally my fault.

Kimberlone I read this when it first came out, and I do think a lot of the information and data is probably dated now. I was also single at the time and probably better appreciated the premise. I do love Aziz‘s humor and he narrated the audiobook so that was also part of the appeal at the time. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ From courting to the digital age and much in between. Note that this focuses on hetero relationships, which Aziz address satisfactorily in the introduction. To be all-encompassing would‘ve been a massive study, not doing anyone proper justice. Anyway, this was a fun and interesting read. Dude is funny! As someone who married prior to the advent of texting and social media - approaching 19 years, y‘all 💕- I can‘t fathom today‘s challenges.

Part sociological study, part advice, and a huge part of humor. Ansari's take on relationships in today's world with an infinite number of options opened my eyes a little bit. I only wish that with all the casual one nighters, there was at least one mention of std prevention. Maybe, I am a prude or Dr. Varghese is still influencing my thinking.

#Nonfiction21 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

readordierachel I don't think it's prudish at all to want STD prevention mentioned. Looking out for sex partners' health is sexy! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Not prudish at all, but practical and smart. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ll admit, I wanted to read this when it came out, but after a #MeToo story about him pressuring a date for sex...I just couldn‘t read it after that. So I‘m finding the lack of STD prevention discussed, confirming my bad opinion on how he treats partners. ☹️ 4y

Butterfinger Oh @Riveted_Reader_Melissa if I had known that I wouldn't have read it at all. I did get the feeling that he is one of those comedians that make fun of other people to get a laugh. So even though the study was informative, I was put off by his humor and now I have a bad opinion of him too. 4y

Catherine_Willoughby Not my cup of tea . I hate modern dating but to be truthful from a city of only 230k citizens there is no choices unless you are looking for hookups on the 3 main apps used (Bumble (no new faces) , Tinder (useless for relationships) or POF (so many weirdos STAY AWAY ). 5y
Catherine_Willoughby You will only have some luck if you live in big cities from online dating . And if you have kids your choices are nill . Most of the guys on these apps have partied or travelled till the age of 35 (average age) who are now panicking . Want a woman who is single with no kids to start a family (even if they have a kid themselves) or might accept 2 kids max. No interest in divorced women or those with 3+ children. 5y

Dating is weird. Even since I was in high school, dating has changed a boatload. Aziz Ansari feels the same way and decided to write a book about it: Modern Romance. It is a funny and informational book about how weird dating is now with all the choices we single people have. Ansari and researchers explore dating in the U.S. and abroad. The only audiobook immediately available from the library. Not what I expected. Researched information on dating. It‘s all a little mind boggling to me. This app, that app, the inability to talk with people face to face. I‘m old and seriously out of the loop. Not sure exactly why he wrote this book and I‘m not sure why I listened to it. But the garden is a lot happier as I weeded with vigor and muttered about some of the info.

Reggie I just want you to know I would read your memoir. Especially if phrases like “weeded with vigor” are in it. 6y
Suet624 @Reggie Haha. I‘ll get right on that. I just unpacked a bunch of journals from my early years. Lots of juicy tidbits to write about. Right alongside all those years of heartache. 😀 6y

I expected a hilarious history of Aziz's romantic mishaps. This is a social study of today's dating habits. Even though I am only 30, and the targeted age group for this,I have no modern dating experience. I married my high school boyfriend. Also, 2 hours in and not very funny. And finally...My husband reminded me of the sexual assault and harassment allegations made again Aziz recently. I actually have no interest in his dating adventures...

Modern Romance illustrates how dating has transformed over the last few generations. The author explains through interviews and statistical data that dating can be, well, complex and messy, even with the advances in technology. Is this groundbreaking information? No, but Aziz encourages readers to be honest, both with themselves and with others they are dating, and to embrace the journey. (I highly recommend the audio book... he cracks me up!)💕

🌟🌟⚡(2.5 stars)
Modern Romance is a book that is funny in places but lacking in insights. In 250 pages, I found out obvious things like, people don't marry young these days, people cheat, Tinder has changed dating, people sext, people play mind games on text etc.

The case studies on Qatar, Japan, Argentina and France were interesting. Aziz's humour can push the book to a level, but it can't compensate for the lack of insights.

BookishMe I enjoyed the anecdotes more than the stats 7y
ChaitanyaSethi @BookishMe The anecdotes were fun. But the stories from Japan, Qatar etc. Were the only places where I learnt something new. Rest were things I knew already 7y

So, this book isn't really a humourous book where Aziz Ansari talks about his dating experiences, it is more about the dating in the modern world. The book has quite some research-y stuff. Turns out Aziz and his partner actually researched the dating culture all around in different places. It's a fun read. Probably not the best book out there on the subject but fairly good. #AzizAnsari #ModernRomance #humour

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I found all of the statistics on relationships fascinating. He touches on everything, from the changes over time in how couples meet, to the stress young people feel to find “the perfect” mate among all of their options in the online world, to the rate of cheating. I got married right before Smart Phones became a thing, and after reading this book, I‘m glad I never had to navigate the world of text wars and Tinder.

Woke up to find Aziz Ansari trending on Twitter and was disappointed to see why. The woman‘s recount is explicit and could be difficult to read. The reaction from the public is further evidence that communication between people needs an overhaul.

I‘m disappointed, and again find myself in a position of choosing whether I read this book, watch his show, or move on to other books and shows.

How do you change your consumption in cases like this?

AmyG I read this. Let‘s just say, while I don‘t watch his show, I think differently of him now. 7y
tpixie It‘s a struggle. I banned Tom Cruise for years after he divorced Nicole Kidman and his issues of control. I‘m struggling with Meryl Streep and her love of Polanski and Weinstein. I have loved so many of Weinstein‘s movies. BUT why I ever thought these people should be used as a moral compass I don‘t know. It‘s their craft I admire, not them. And Matt Damon- is he complicit- or just awkward with his answers??? (edited) 7y
See All 9 Comments
Notafraidofwords It‘s so hard, but it‘s never harder than the stuff these men have put some women through. Sometimes in the back of my mind, I just assume that while these actors are all good at acting, they become consumed with power. This doesn‘t excuse it, but it helps me keep a distance. 7y
amvs1111 Uggghh. Yes, it definitely changes my consumption. Sad to hear though because I enjoyed his work. 7y
Tamra I have stopped consuming in various cases. One I remember distinctly is I immediately gave away all of my kids Bill Cosby books, I couldn‘t abide the thought. 7y
Foxyfictionista Stopped watching master of none and took his book off my list. Frankly, I don't want to hear what someone has to say when they can't behave themselves. I imagine that if I knew the extent to which a lot of people in entertainment behaved it would severely cut down my media consumption. 7y
everlocalwest I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of consent in our society and I think that is a major factor missing from the Me Too movement. I'm not saying it is the responsibility of the victims of sexual assault to start this conversation but the media coverage on them should be a least somewhat focused on educating people. I'm not trying to defend his actions but feel like this is a case wherein a lack of awareness of consent played a role. 7y

I absolutely loved this book. My feelings are perhaps best summed up by this figure that shows the difference between the volume of messages straight women and men receive on OKCupid (by "attractiveness," whatever that means). I've never been so happy to be queer...

Drnkpnkprincess Bahahahahaha I guess I‘m not very attractive according to this! (But I also haven‘t been on a dating site in 6+ years so 🤷🏼‍♀️) 7y
keggergoldy @Drnkpnkprincess yeah, I don't know how they define "attractive," and it was the big piece of data that made me raise an eyebrow. I suspect most of these data are only relevant for the last 5 years or so. I find the entire online dating meat-market vibe to be really strange. At least this book explains some of the context for it. 7y
Drnkpnkprincess @keggergoldy hahahah it‘s totally a meat market! When my girlfriends and I were away at a bachelorette week they were obsessed with using tinder to find guys to meet us out and about... I fear for the younger generations who will not know how to communicate with our swiping left or right. 7y

While drinking tea from my "nice" mug, I came across this passage about sex motels in Buenos Aires. The same practice occurs in Rio de Janeiro for many of the same reasons. I used one back in 2007 when my whole family was visiting, and I remember how classy the place was. Fancy room service, swank showers, super soft sheets. Hotels that charge by the hour are super important for adults still living with their parents. Feeling less "nice" now. ?

This mug may no longer be relevant, but it is an excellent companion to my AM reading. In this passage, Ansari makes a funny-yet-anachronistic joke about picking someone up in 1990: "Hey, girl, come back here with that fine butt that's in them fly-ass acid-washed jeans and let me take you to a Spin Doctors/Better Than Ezra concert." Bonus points if you can spot the problem without Wikipedia. #pedantic
