Took this at Everett Station while waiting for my train because I am a dork. Also, creating a new comedy persona/character named Liz Zil and this is posted on her new Instagram LizZilLit. If you follow me there don‘t tell anyone it is me! That is our Litzy secret. ;)

Picked this up because I thought it might be like a project I have been working on. Having a horrible time with it & think I might have hoped too much that it was. I need to set it down to begin again later, as a reader alone, without expectation. Starting to see a bunch of #Russian “new” Cold War #cyber type books that are playing with the the #spy #thriller genre but perhaps too abstract to fully hold the reader‘s attention? A new challenge?

Chose this book because of an alcoholic character I have been working on... (ok, fine! -obsessing over) for awhile. I wanted to see how this author addressed redemption/sympathy for her flawed protagonist. I hadn‘t realized there was a #Russian plot connection when I bought it! This book was exactly the kind of book I was looking for but somehow only found on accident. Adding blood to the cover art was fun too.

“1 in 25.” The scariest part is realizing even beyond this statistic, empathy & conscience is easily forgone or trumped by other social orders. Important topics.

Reading a book that was finished after the author‘s death is strangely intimate. Reading a book about the lives destroyed by this man is more intimate still. Knowing this man was arrested just weeks ago & brought to light because of the profound commitment of the people in this book... powerful. Human connection extends beyond death. At the most devastating, this book reads as hope & love. We now know the families & victims & we are all changed.

Gerald's Game | Stephen King

Decided to listen on Audible today as I worked on projects. Thought I picked a no-brainer. Hooked right away but ... is it bad to say the beloved Stephen King could have MAYBE made this a bit shorter? Over 5 hours in & over 8 more to go. Not much of a build up so far for me but with all of the #metoo & post #50shades I expected something >unique. I know. I am evil & certainly no Mr. King. Will press on but I must really be jaded. Pray for me.

This is now on its way to my collection. I love that such a book even exists. I never liked horror but as I have gotten older I found horror fills a need and can heal just as much as laughter. Books like this give me hope for mankind. “Horror teaches us that the human personality is paradoxical, that revulsion and disgust are the obverse of excitement and freedom, and that both poles are vital to individual, social, and ecological well-being.”

If you love #comedy history you will love this book. With the recent passing of #MitziShore & the success of the Showtime series based on this book (not a retelling) it seems right to mention it in my feed. I will likely post more comedy inspiration later but this is a keeper. A great read with a lot of personal meaning for me & those who love the #comedystore and #LA #standup comedy. RIP Mitzi. :(

“How do you respond when told something is impossible? Is that the end of the conversation or the start of one? What‘s the reaction to being told you can‘t—that no one can? One type accepts it, wallows in it even. The other questions it, fights it, rejects it.”

Currently reading this, among others. Can‘t get enough. Looking for good #Russian #spy #thrillers. Present day #hackers or #cyber #espionage good too! Thanks for any suggestions!

I really enjoyed this book because of the deep POV it allowed me. Too many other books catch my interest but do not let me in. I could feel these characters. If you are one for people watching this might be for you.

Red Sparrow: A Novel | Jason Matthews

I am going to rate this well because I found so much to digest. Pun intended. Too much to break down here in 451. I read the other 2 in the series as well but it went down hill fast. I have to wonder if these were rushed because of a/the movie deal? It FEELS like everything that could have been - just was not. By book 3 I wanted to give Jason Matthews a hug & help him look for his soul. Or maybe he is laughing to the bank. Could go both ways.

The ending saved this book. Do NOT skip ahead & read the ending. This was not a spy thriller. This was a story about a CIA analyst who wanted to be a mother. On many levels this speaks to women everywhere & the themes are universal. We think we choose for ourselves but someone else is usually behind the wheel. I enjoyed this book because of these themes & a 2nd book could be killer but this is a book about a woman trapped. Sad; not thrilling.
