Finished this past week for my virtual foodie book club, this was between a pick & so-so for me but rounded up as spy books aren‘t really my thing but this one kept me reading. Also the recipes at the end of each chapter, plus all the food descriptions made it unique. Not sure I‘ll read the next one but maybe.Pictured with (Station Chief) Forsyth‘s Soubise (caramelized onion & rice casserole) from the book. Yum!😋Link to recipe/review blog post⬇️
Not an Irish breakfast or an Irish book, but definitely some heavy St.Patrick‘s Day (with a touch of Easter) decorating was happening at the diner where I got my fried rice with an over-easy egg cup. Also featured, a SBUX Caramel Macchiato & a poi donut.🤷🏻♀️I got about 1/2 a chapter read of this book for my virtual foodie book club this morning before work got crazy & I never got a chance to post it. Happy St. Paddy‘s Day everyone! ☘️💚🌈🍀
Occasional dry, sometimes stilted language. Otherwise a good, well-paced spy-thriller
This is how you write a spy novel! I was sooo disappointed with John le Carré earlier this year. It felt like they were only swapping documents in parks in the middle of the night without any logic to the story. Red sparrow had a really good characters and such a good plot! If you've never tried a spy novel before this is where you start! Also first "international novel" that I've read that had big part of the events happening in Finland. ??
I'm already hooked! I started this today and I am so surprised how well this book works in an audio form! 😍
The book is so much better than the movie. I love how she's a synesthete! The author's CIA background makes this an even more fascinating peek into the intelligence gathering world.
157-2020 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Audiobook 34
My first spy book!! Absolutely loved it!! I found in parts it reminding me of the TV series Berlin Station, so kept seeing Richard Armitage in my head as the CIA Agent Nate Nash.
I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Here‘s my #24in48 Hour 12 Audiobook Challenge post! I recently switched from Audible to Libro.fm. My taste in audiobooks is pretty varied and ultimately comes down to a good narrator.
#tallshipcelebration @CrowCAH #sparrow I have this on my TBR - I have always found spy thrillers fascinating- especially when the MC is female. This one is actually written by an ex CIA agent.
I'm struggling to focus on my new #audiobook. I think it's me just having too much on my mind, but if I don't get into the zone by the end of my commute tomorrow, I may have to switch to print. #audible #commute #spynovel #espionage
I‘m usually a big fan of spy thrillers, espionage etc in a novel but this was just too slow and painful for me. I just couldn‘t stomach more than the first half, so I bailed. Maybe I‘ll watch the film, if I‘ve got a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon ☔️
This book was between a pick and a so-so for me. There were certain points where I couldn‘t put it down and others when I would space off in the middle of a page or chapter. Also, since many characters go by multiple names I sometimes had trouble keeping track of who was who. I‘m looking forward to watching the movie and will likely read the rest of the trilogy, though.
I don‘t read many spy/espionage thrillers. After reading this book, I‘m not sure why! Slow to start as the stage is set, but then the action and intrigue take off. The pace doesn‘t slow down until the last page, which sets the stage for the next book in the trilogy. FYI, contains graphic violence & sex. Bonus: one recipe at the end of each chapter for the foods consumed in the novel (although they‘re vague w/ no measurements). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Using my snowman mug this morning, since everyone is talking about the possibility of snow this weekend. Almost finished this book! Can‘t picture yet how it‘s going to wrap in the next 30 pages, and curious about what the next book has in store for these characters.
This is what my day off has looked like: my book, my dog, my couch, with cough drops and tissues nearby. A day of rest while I try to kick this cold. I even shirked my mom duties today and had hubby bring dinner home for the kids. I can‘t remember the last time I truly took a sick day. 🤧😷 Thank goodness it‘s Friday!
I am about halfway through this book and think I‘ve figured out who the mole is. Now, to race to the finish to see if I‘m right!
Starting off the new year with the congestion and cough that the rest of my family had between Christmas and New Year‘s. Ending my day with some herbal tea and this book, and headed to bed a little early. It‘s a busy week ahead with appointments, work, and kids‘ activities.
My 13 year old daughter gave me the second book in this series for Christmas. She got it from the local “Five Below” (like a dollar store but everything is $5 or below) and did not know it was the second in a trilogy, and I love her for it. ❤️🥰 So, I borrowed the first book from the local library via Overdrive and I am starting it today, so I can read the book she gave me next.
Wow, I thought the movie was intense and good - reading it was even better! More detail, more secrets, more romance, more passion, more spy talk! I loved it!
I get now why this has mixed reviews. You either get into it immediately and understand what‘s going on or you never know what‘s going on and suffer through it. Blehhhhh bail!! Onto the next adventure
Excited to dive into this new novel... I love books with mixed reviews. Makes life exciting!
It took me forever to finish this! It was interesting but it wasn‘t one of those stories I couldn‘t put down. I listened to a good part in audio which helped with all the Russian pronunciations. Since it took so long for me to finish this one I wasn‘t going to bother with the next one but Red Sparrow kind of ended on a cliffhanger so now I need to know what happens next! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Sometimes I got a little bogged down with all the tradecraft talk, but generally the story was interesting and fast moving. I didn‘t realize this was the first book if a trilogy... I‘ll have to decide if I am committed to the next two books.
I totally forgot this started yesterday even though I had it on my calendar 😂. So, yesterday I only read about 90 minutes. Timer has started! #25infive
This book was slow going for me but parts were exciting. Overall I could have done with more action and less talk about spy tradecraft. Even though I liked some of the characters, I don‘t think I‘ll be reading the other books in the trilogy.
I'm so interested in this book and especially the movie! Call me a fan girrrrrl but #Jlaw is my lady crush! Doesn't hurt she's from #Louisville #KY and down to earth AF. Met her while working in a bank moons ago.
Any books you wanna read just based on movie or actor/actress??
#redsparrow #jlaw #tbr #airportfinds
I really liked this book in the beginning. It was moving quickly and really got me interested in the characters and the story. But then, it just kept getting more complicated and there were infinitely more characters to keep up with. By the end, I felt myself getting confused and I had a hard time staying interested. I liked this, but I don‘t feel like it needed to be as long as it was.
#AudioPuzzling along tonight(or early morning)with Red Sparrow by Jason Matthews, the series that the movie is based on. Obviously, considering the title page is the movie poster. Really enjoying it so far, if this is at all accurate, I‘m terrified of the future which will include a worse Cold War than the last one. Some seriously scary stuff.☢️
Just got an email from Audible telling me I had 6 credits built up & I would lose one if I didn‘t use it today. Whoops! I‘ve just checked, I have been an #AudibleMember since 2007😱So that‘s 2 audiobooks a month for 11yrs, that‘s 264 books total🤓This is the 5 I finally settled on tonight, I still have one Credit left, so give me your recs for great audiobooks to use my last credit on👍 #Audible #Audiobook #AudiobookLove
Enjoying some reading on the beaches of Lake Malawi on my African adventure. 😊
Finished. My reading progress was slow this week due to what I consider an excessive amount of required adulting. I worked hard today to get it finished, and my reward will be settling in for the latest J Law movie with the hubby and a glass of wine. (Wine glass courtesy of my mom 😂)
Getting started on my next read. Prime recently alerted me that the movie was available to rent, so I had to get the book started ASAP. I know it's the movie tie-in cover- please forgive me, but it's Jennifer Lawrence, enough said. Quite a deviation from the YA phase I've been in, but so far so good as long as I can keep all the Russian names straight. I remember a similar predicament with Crime and Punishment. 🤔
An route to East Africa, enjoying a long layover in Amsterdam. 😊
Suspenseful spy thriller pitting US against Russia but set in modern times (Putin cameos!). The characters were a little simplistic but the tradecraft is fascinating. Fast-paced and fun! Loved the recipes at the end of each chapter.
Russian spies, CIA subplots, love, treachery and a surprising amount of food recipes. This was a bit slower than I expected but the intrigue was constant. Thank goodness for two more books in the series!
This is a great yarn about the CIA and its Russian counterpart waging a secret war. At the center is Dominica, a Russian agent, who has fallen in love with Nate from the CIA. There are myriad subplots and Matthews is a master at creating memorable supporting characters. There‘s plenty of action and intrigue as the agencies move their human pawns around a global chessboard. There are two more books in the trilogy and the second is just as good!
Right book, wrong time. I like my spy novels to be a bit faster-paced. Fans of Le Carre and Martin Cruz Smith will enjoy this one. Good writing, but I just couldn‘t get into it lately. I‘ll try again another time as I‘m sure it picks up as it goes along, but there was way too much initial set-up for me. I definitely wanna see the movie though!
This was freaking awesome. I may actually need to see the movie now. 💖📚
Mani/pedi and a book before my business trip to Florida starting tomorrow! Should be a crazy week (Work has been crazy leading up to it too) and I feel like I am already way behind in my Litsy participation. Miss you guys. ❤️❤️🏝
I am going to rate this well because I found so much to digest. Pun intended. Too much to break down here in 451. I read the other 2 in the series as well but it went down hill fast. I have to wonder if these were rushed because of a/the movie deal? It FEELS like everything that could have been - just was not. By book 3 I wanted to give Jason Matthews a hug & help him look for his soul. Or maybe he is laughing to the bank. Could go both ways.
