I‘m in the middle of two very appropriate titles for today‘s eclipse and #MiddleGradeMonday (although Lunar New Year Love Story is YA rather than MG). The bottom left photo is on my porch: the peak of the eclipse here in Southern California, seen via shadows through our rose trellis. The bottom right photo was taken by my nephew, in the path of totality in southeastern Indiana!

In honor of the eclipse crossing the US today, let's share MG books with SUN or MOON in the title!

My pick is a story of an abandoned girl, named Luna, rescued by a witch. When she is accidentally fed moonlight instead of starlight, she gains magical abilities. Just as she's learning to handle this power, she is needed to save the ones she loves. This story has the feel of a fairytale with lovable characters!

A story that captivates my scholars is one that I need to have on my shelf!

“Knowledge is power, but it is a terrible power when it is hoarded and hidden.”

This novel has a slightly darker feel with a tale of corruption and mystery. It would be a good pick to have in a 5/6 or middle school classroom. The first chapter hooks the reader making them want to figure out the secrets of the town and the young girl.

This book is set in a dystopian world where people live in fear of the Witch. The Witch demands a sacrifice from the people each year of the youngest in the town. We get to find out the lies and secrets that are held by the town elders and what might happen if a sacrificed child returns.

“It‘s not as though the Council of Elders is coming for you now is it, you‘re far too old”.

I enjoyed reading this book because it would be the perfect time in the classroom to use this since we are close to halloween and the beginning sounds spooky. Older children might have to have a warning before reading, but I don‘t think the book would be too scary to read to older children.

The book is about a witch who lives in the forest filled with all kinds of creepy things. A little girl is waiting for the sacrifice the next morning. One child must be sacrificed to save them all, this book starts off sounding spooky.

This book is a slightly darker tale of corruption and mystery, making it a good pick for middle or late elementary school students. This book will certainly hook students within the first chapter, wanting to learn more about the town and the young girl.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon presents a dystopian world where the people live in fear of “the Witch” who demands a sacrifice each year of the youngest among the town. The book explores the lies and secrets being kept by the villages “Elders” and what might happen if a sacrificed child resurfaces.

I started this book. I like it so far. I feel like I‘m listening to a fairy tale. It‘s a middle grade book that‘s been on my Goodreads TBR since 2017. It‘s about a young girl raised by a witch, a swamp monster, and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon.

This is what happens when you‘re ordering books for a swap and you “need” to reach the minimum for free shipping. Ohhhh nooooo. 😁

What was a name anyway?

Finally finished listening to this story this morning. It‘s been a good few months of listening in dribs and drabs! The story itself is beautiful and well written. I would recommend it.

This novel follows a girl named Luna through a mystical world filled with magical beings and events. It's mysterious and a modern take on the classic fairy-tales. It goes through many life lessons through out making it perfect for older-elementary readers.

I am curious on how they choose the child and if someone has a baby just for the sacrifice. This is so sad!

I think this is interesting that the people of the town think that they are sacrificing a baby to the witch who lives in the forest but there is a person who takes those kids and delivers them to welcoming families. I am curious about what starlight and moonlight is and what it can do to the children!

The first chapter is short but I think is a great intro to the book. Explaining the story behind the witch of the woods. It‘s a great foreshadow to what is coming up in within the book. I love how they detail about the story and it goes along with speculative fiction because it is like a folk tale, that has been told for a long time or that it‘s just known in the town which could be true or could not be true.

I would pick this book due to the elements of imagery and the fairy tale genre. I think children would like to follow along with this book every step of the way as things begin to twist and turn; and nothing is expected.

This book was published 2016. It is about a girl who drank the moon and will grow up to have extraordinary powers so someone has to be her keeper and help her through life. I think this would be a good and easy book to keep up with.

I really liked reading the first chapter and the summary on the cover I would maybe enjoy reading this book!

This book published in 2016 is about a nice witch who deliveries the babies who are sacrificed to her to wonderful loving families. The witch accidentally feeds the most recent baby light from the moon, turning the baby extremely powerful. As she ages the girl becomes more dangerous and danger rises in every aspect.

This story is set up in a way that puts the reader into the story and give the reader the background knowledge needed to understand the story.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill (2016) is a book about a family who leaves their baby to the witch in hopes it will keep her from terrorizing their town. A young boy accidentally feeds the baby moonlight instead of starlight fulling the boy with magic! This story is readable and set up in a way that puts the reader in the story.

People sacrifice innocent lives of children, but don‘t even try and change it.

A book of major misunderstanding and sacrifice. This book has lots of magic in it. The opener of the book discusses the day of sacrifice which is when a child will be given up to save the town. I think this will be a great read.

i did not like the first 2 chapters. It was hard for me to understand and it isn‘t the kind of books i like to read.
