Loved this book! A short read but jam packed with heart and soul. Although I grew up white in Minneapolis, and I am 70 years old, I could identify with some of the feelings that main character expressed.

I read this via audiobook and was glad to have done so. This story read as poetry and was meant to be heard. The story itself was good, although I felt it was too flowery and fragmented at some points. 3.5 of 5.

This is my third Jacqueline Woodson book so far and while there‘s never any biiig exciting adventures, I always walk away feeling like I learned something. My life is so incredibly different from her characters‘ lives and I‘m glad I get to learn about their experiences, even if they are fictional. We grew up in different worlds and I think it‘s necessary to learn how other grow up and live, especially when you come from a place of privilege.

A little late on posting book covers this week. Last week it was James and the Giant Peach for the win. This week I‘m jumping from childhood favorites to two covers that just caught my eye as I was checking the sale aisles at one of my favorite local bookstores. Although you can‘t really see it in this photo, the cover for Woodson‘s book is metallic and sparkly in the right light. Do you have a favorite?

emtobiasz I prefer the other cover I‘ve seen for Another Brooklyn, the one with the silhouettes. But Things We Lost In the Fire always catches my eye 🔥 (edited) 5mo

Beautiful, haunting, and a bit dream-like—I found it hard initially to orient myself with this book. Then I settled in & it felt a bit like jazz, improvising phrases & ideas around a central theme, moving in new directions only to return to the same deepening refrain. It was interesting reading this so soon after Brown Girl Dreaming; in many ways it felt like a continuation in prose. The language is gorgeous & I‘m glad I listened to the audiobook.

This book is astoundingly good. Such beautiful writing, and Woodson has perfectly captured so much human being stuff: what it‘s like to be an adolescent girl, what it‘s like to be heartbroken, what it‘s like to lose people. The only thing I didn‘t love about this book was that there wasn‘t more of it.❤️

“I know now that what is tragic isn‘t the moment. It is the memory.”

This audio is brilliantly done, too! 😃

This was a sad, coming of age tale about four girls growing up in 1970‘s Brooklyn. Had I not read the note by the author I would have assumed this was based on the author‘s life or, at the very least, people she knew. I suppose this is a testament to Woodson‘s writing as she managed to make the fictional world she created seem touching and real within the span of a few short pages.

“I and I and I,” we chanted. “We and we and we.”

If the above words don‘t capture the essence of adolescence, I don‘t know which words do. Woodson perfectly expresses how it feels to be a teen - to want to be an individual so badly: to want to be heard; be seen; be singular; be understood, while at the same time only feeling like you‘re You - like you‘re only complete - when being validated by your friends, people who mean EVERYTHING to you.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/4: Woodson also captures what it feels like to grow up and *lose* that. She‘s someone who understands that loneliness is ever-present: whether you have friends who lay their heads against your chest to feel your heartbeat, who have soft hair into which you can cry — or whether you‘re behind a pane of glass, outside looking in, or separated from the friends you love by the ever-widening gap of adulthood. (edited) 1y
monalyisha 2/4: As if that weren‘t sad enough, “Another Brooklyn” explores the profound pain of losing a parent, the tragedy of the state of mental health in America, class wars, race wars, and the awful vulnerability & terrible strength of women.

Still, in spite of/because of the pain, it‘s a beautiful book. Woodson knows how to make just a few words say nearly everything.
(edited) 1y
monalyisha 3/4: *Note: If there‘s any complaint I have against this book, it‘s that it seems to confirm that friendships between women can‘t ever be fully healthy & supportive. August‘s mother tells her that women “aren‘t to be trusted.” She says, “Keep your arm out...and keep women a whole other hand away from the farthest tips of your fingernails. She tells her to, “keep [her] nails long.” 1y
See All 8 Comments
monalyisha 4/4: The plot seems to support this advice as sage... but you can see from the acknowledgements that Woodson has a whole crew of female friends that she relies upon. I‘m choosing to brush my own criticism away, telling myself that Woodson means to evoke a feeling & a time of life with the plot more-so than she means for it to be didactic or convey a True message. 1y

Does anyoneever wish a book would be LONGER? I never feel that way, but about this book, Woodson's lovely prose and heartfelt story- I do! Wow. Just under 3 hours of audio and yet it so captured me and brought me to 1970's Brooklyn and August's transition from a sheltered life, slowly breaking free into a more normal teenage existence in the city.

Another book in which Woodson writes an exquisitely rendered story of childhood & growing up with all of its joys, fears, disappointments, love, friendship, family & discovery. This one tells the story of four girls growing up in Brooklyn in the 70s. The narrative moves between the present & the memories of August who moved with her family to Brooklyn after a tragedy. Strong sense of place, engaging characters, and a good story. Recommended.

A gorgeous, lyrical snapshot of young friendship and girlhood just on the cusp of adulthood. It was too short, I didn‘t want the story to be over. It reminded me of the works of Toni Morrison and Sandra Cisneros with a little bit of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Dark and poetic.

I read Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson so fast and now I need to go back and read it again. It‘s such a poetic rendering of a complex story of family, death, friendship, and adolescence. Pensive about the forms of memory and reflections on the past, the author weaves in and out of different characters to tell this story. Powerful, sad, and beautiful. In some ways it reminds me of Out of the Dust by Karen Hessee.

Woodson's prose is poetic, almost musical, and it made for a perfect audiobook choice. Robin Miles's narration is exceptionally good. This short book is told in fragments and memories as August recounts her childhood and adolescence as a young black motherless girl in Brooklyn. This was my first book by Woodson, but I will certainly be reading more by this author.

Woodson‘s writing is lyrical and moving in this coming-of-age story about August, a girl who moves to Bushwick, Brooklyn in 1973. Alternating between the present, when she returns home to bury her father, and her life as a young girl dealing with a tragic event that took her mother from her, the novel examines time, memory, and the relationships that shape people.

This was a lovely, quick listen. Woodson has such a way with words. This was much heavier than Brown Girl Dreaming and since it was audio I‘m still unclear if it was poetry (which it sounded like) or prose. I wish it had been just a little longer, as there were a couple characters I still wanted to follow.
