For the cover alone, I‘ve been saving this used bookstore find for reading on actual Halloween! Unfortunately, the cover is the best part of this very 90s horror novel. With gore, absolutely cringingly awful sex scenes & wooden characters who so nonchalantly accept the supernatural & never really discuss anything, this is a slog to get through. Never delivering any real chills or thrills, I guess I‘ll be using this as a decoration moving forward!

This one is so much fun!! Across SVMS, students are randomly paired off for two week “marriages” to learn to budget, compromise on important decisions, prepare a healthy meal & keep an egg baby alive. The pairings make this fun: Elizabeth/Bruce Patman, Jessica/Rick Hunter, Lila/Todd, Ellen/Winston Egbert, etc. Rick‘s teasing covers his genuine feelings for Jessica & it‘s clear she feels the same way! Even Bruce goes all in for his new family!

This fourth installment of the #EdinburghNightsSeries reminds me the most of the first one! It‘s an entertaining blend of action, mystery, intrigue & heartbreak! Ropa‘s working with the English magician, planning a new life away from Scotland. But Edinburgh isn‘t ready to let the ghost talker go. Ropa learns more about her family & past, but more questions—& trouble— arises. This ends on a real cliffhanger & I can‘t wait for book 5!! Great audio!

This book opens with Elizabeth‘s frustration over a missing turquoise sweater that she can‘t find in Jessica‘s disaster of a room. But when all the Unicorns except for Jessica fall victim to the Sweet Valley Swiper (a missing coat, silver earrings, Lila‘s Watchman), it‘s Liz & Amy to the rescue, resurrecting the SVK Super Snoopers to catch the case & catch the thief red-handed! I always love when a twin-switch helps save the day!

Oooo! This #ThreeListThursday was a tough one! I‘m not sure that any of my real favorites made the list, but I still had a hard time narrowing this down to three!
Other than the Sweet Valley High Thrillers, my childhood was filled with exchanging Mary Higgins Clark books with my grandmother and though this isn‘t my favorite of hers, I have read it a few times. And I love both Case Histories and Big Little Lies!
Thanks @dabbe for organizing #TLT!

dabbe YW! I read Clark's books with my mom and grandma, too! 🤩 CASE HISTORIES is now on my TBR! Thanks for sharing and playing! 🖤🎃🖤 5d
TorieStorieS @dabbe I really loved the whole series (though she just had a sixth installment come out last month after five years of waiting that I haven‘t actually read yet… I will probably reread them all first!) 4d
JenlovesJT47 Big Little Lies is so good! Have you watched the show? I also just binged another Liane Moriarty show, Nine Perfect Strangers. I thought it was really good. 4d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I did see the show! But I haven‘t watched Nine Perfect Strangers— is that on HBO, too?? I don‘t know how I missed it! I watched Apples Never Fall on Peacock, too, but they made more changes than I expected! 4d

A great #SpookySeason read! This mystery, told through two perspectives— the ghost of a woman in her forties & the twenty year old who takes over the lease on the furnished apartment— makes for a fun read! Cordelia & Ruby work together to solve the murder of the guy living across the hallway in “their”Boston apartment building. With struggles to communicate & plenty of lingering questions, this feels fresh & leaves you eager for the sequel!

It‘s the “first” (okay, not the actual first!) boy/girl dance at SVMS. Lila‘s awful new neighbor, Veronica Brooks keeps bragging about her old school & has her competitive sights set on none other than Todd! And when Jessica ditches Aaron for Bruce, Liz consoles Aaron—& winds up kissing him! But for a #SweetValleyValentinesDay, Ellen hosts another boy/girl party where all the mixed-up couples can be set to rights! Make-up kisses & a food fight!

JenlovesJT47 This was always one of my faves! 5d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 It‘s such a fun one!! Though despite their excitement, it‘s definitely not the first boy/girl dance! That was what Aaron Dallas did for his birthday back when the grandparents were in town! 🤣 5d
JenlovesJT47 Lol I have read almost none of the earlier books, I am coming to realize. I know I read the Mandy Miller one where she‘s sick, then I started reading them in the 60s. I got earlier books here and there when I could, like the first 5 or so. So I‘m thoroughly enjoying this read through! 5d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I am having so much fun, too! I‘m coming up on some new to me books pretty soon, I think! I‘m looking forward to them!! 5d

This is my original book club‘s choice for the month and I enjoyed this quick listen! It‘s a very fun one that had me laughing out loud and taking the extra long way home to keep listening! Multiple perspectives center around a community center on the verge of closing. At 70, Daphne plans on embracing life more fully while Abe, an actor with a shoplifting habit yearns to reconnect with his estranged daughter. Teenage dad Ziggy needs a better life.

Suet624 My librarian just told me about this one. She really liked it too. (edited) 6d

Patty Gilbert, a relatively new girl to #SweetValley, loves ballet dancing more than anything. She even ignored Kerry Glenn‘s friendly overtures because Kerry is her only real competition in their advanced class. But when Mme Baril notices something different about Patty, she is scared to go to the doctor & even more scared after her diagnosis that may mean the end of her dancing days! Meanwhile, Jessica schemes to get their class on television!

JenlovesJT47 This is one of the first SVT books I ever bought so this was around the time I started reading them. I learned about scoliosis from this book! 😆 5d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Oh wow!! This one was a re-read for me, but I didn‘t remember much at all about it! I also don‘t remember Patty being in any other books! 5d
JenlovesJT47 Patty is in SVH and she‘s also on the show. Another one who wasn‘t poorly casted, few and far between though they may be 😆 5d

Just in time for the #SpookySeason, my favorite author has a collection of new short stories (and an updated version of his slim monograph about the 1972 film HORROR EXPRESS which is part history/breakdown of the movie and part autobiographical regarding Connolly‘s own nostalgia surrounding it). I loved adding on more tales about the Caxton library and the ghostly & monster-y stories are perfect for this time of year! As usual, I love his writing!

The Magic Christmas | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne
post image
Pickpick

In this fifth #SweetValleyChristmas for the twins, it‘s Christmas Eve & the twins stay behind to exchange gifts to each other while everyone else goes to the airport for Alice‘s parents. Liz wrote a special story & a framed photo while Jess planned ahead & bought tickets for a concert & the bus to LA. Their disappointment leads to an epic fight & special harlequin dolls lead to an epic adventure in a fantasy land to bring them together again! ⬇️

TorieStorieS With another set of twins, opposing personalities, kisses, real unicorns & plenty of drama to remind them the real magic is the gift of being twins! 7d
JenlovesJT47 My fave ❤️❤️❤️ 7d
JenlovesJT47 I like how they had continuity with the Sweet Valley sagas (I read those over and over again!) with their twin ancestors. 7d
See All 12 Comments
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know!! I loved those, too! I am really excited to get to them! I also thought it was funny that even Lila got involved at the end! 🤣 7d
JenlovesJT47 Yes like I said, Lila is so dramatic and I‘m here for it lol. I always wished this book was a movie but they would probably not do it justice 😆 7d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I have always had a soft spot for Lila, even when she‘s at her snottiest! Considering what they did with the TV show, I am guessing a movie wouldn‘t be the same!! 🤣 7d
JenlovesJT47 Yes, me too! Lila‘s Story was the only good one out of all 5 of those superstar stories. And don‘t get me started on the TV show!! 😤 Of course I watched it when it was on but I was so mad! Lila— a redhead?!?! Todd — blonde?? No no no no lol. The twins and Winston were spot on though lol. 6d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know!! I really didn‘t watch much of the show because it was just too different and I couldn‘t handle it! But I may try to give it a watch at some point… but maybe not, because I don‘t know that I would be able to handle it any better now. My husband remembers the show better than I did because his younger sisters would watch it, so I always think it‘s funny that he has some frame of reference for these books!🤣 6d
JenlovesJT47 I have it on dvd somewhere but I have never been able to bring myself to watch the whole thing 😆 And if you read those 3 special edition SVH books that are about the show it tells you just how totally they screw up some of the storylines! Like Jess can be a bit of a sociopath sometimes especially in the early SVH books, but they take it to a totally different level. No bueno 😬 6d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I don‘t think I have any books about the show!! What are they called?? 6d

This was my book club‘s pick for the month— a solid piece of historical fiction set in Maine just over a decade past the Revolutionary War. Based on the life of midwife Martha Ballard, Martha makes for a strong heroine in a time when respect for a woman is hard won and rare. She gets involved in a murder investigation while seeking justice for a friend, with flashes into her own past. Her husband‘s perfection, however, is the larger mystery! 🤣

BarbaraBB Haha I just read this too and yes, he is absolutely perfect! 1w

Well this marks my first #audiobook that I‘ve ever listened to where the main character shares my first name! Distracting at times, it was also kind of fun! This police procedural set in a MN town starts with the disappearance of Tori‘s identical twin. On the 20th anniversary of that night, another woman vanishes in the same way! But now, Tori‘s an FBI agent. A bit predictable in some ways, but well-plotted, I am looking forward to the sequel!

I‘ve been looking forward to this one since I first heard about it! I really enjoy Chizmar‘s writing & this standalone set in 1983 Appalachia has plenty of time period nostalgia, & a creeping tension as three college friends work together on a school project on roadside memorials. When creepy things start happening, it quickly becomes impossible to know who to trust. It opens a little slowly, but the ending certainly keeps the pages flying fast!

MyNamesParadise I‘m going to an event at my local independent bookstore tomorrow night for this book and will get to see the author! I‘m glad it‘s good! 1w

JenlovesJT47 Ooh this is on my list! Have you ever read the one he wrote with Stephen King? So good 7d
See All 10 Comments
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I haven‘t! But it‘s in my wishlist on Audible! I really enjoyed his Boogeyman books, though, so I‘m sure I will love it, too!! 7d
JenlovesJT47 I‘m a big Stephen King fan and Gwendy is one of my favorites. The audiobook is really good. Maggie Siff (Tara from Sons of Anarchy) is the narrator. It‘s only 3 hours and there are 2 more books in the series, but the first one is the best. 7d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I knew it was short, which is why it‘s still on my wishlist… I try to wait for sales on books under 10 hours and save my credits for longer ones! I have found that I enjoy King‘s books more on audio— or maybe it‘s just that I have liked those ones I listened to more than the ones I physically read? 🤷‍♀️ 7d
JenlovesJT47 That‘s funny, I‘m usually the opposite. I try to read all his books with my eyeballs first because I don‘t want to miss anything. 🤓 Makes sense about Audible! I used to do the same but these days I get all my audiobooks on Hoopla or Overdrive. 6d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I think IT on audio converted me to preferring King on audio— it‘s a long listen, but such a great performance! I have been an Audible member for so long and have always been happy with it, though I have heard good things about both Hoopla and Overdrive. Spotify has some audiobooks now, too! 6d
JenlovesJT47 Yes I saw that on Spotify, I think you can listen for 15 hours a month or something like that! 6d
TorieStorieS Oh I didn‘t know they limited it! Interesting approach! I wonder if it counts for hours of the book or time listened?? I usually listen at 2.5x speed, so that would be a big difference! 6d

Yikes!! This was the scariest, tensest listen that I‘ve encountered in a while. I‘d heard the hype, but still found this to be an electrifying debut with such immediacy that it‘s hard to stop listening for any reason! The book opens with a mother of two young children startling awake at the sound of a person in their house in the middle of the night. The tension & horror begins there… and between this fresh horror, we learn the family‘s backstory.

DogMomIrene I loved this one too! I was scared that it might be too scary, but I read it so quickly I don‘t think I had time to freak out. 2w
TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene I think if I listened to this at night and home alone, rather than mostly walking my dog in the daylight, it would have been too scary… I gasped out loud a few times and frightened my dog, too! 2w
DogMomIrene @TorieStorieS Agree! I was reading at night, but my husband was around. And I‘ve done the gasping reaction in the car with my dogs and I have to reassure them that I‘m okay. 2w

TorieStorieS @DogMomIrene I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who accidentally gives their dog a scare! I did scare my husband after reading SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC because I opened up our attic to take the picture which I guess sounded creepy to him! 🤣 If you haven‘t read that one, I definitely recommend it! Frustrating characters but an addictive read like this one! 2w
DogMomIrene @TorieStorieS I just added Someone in the Attic to my TBR earlier in October. Thanks, @JenlovesJT47 for the tag for the #ThreeListThursday! I really enjoyed Audrain‘s debut novel, so I had some high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, despite the fast pacing, the unlikable characters & unsatisfying ending left me wanting. I‘m sure this could lead to lively discussion but the four different women‘s perspectives here certainly don‘t make neighborhood life appealing! Whitney‘s rage, Blair‘s creepy nosiness, Rebecca‘s extreme secrecy & Mara‘s pent-up emotion all were hard to connect with!

Despite his disastrous (& expensive!) first date with Jill Hale, Steven clearly still has it bad for her. When Janet Howell brags about how much in love Jill is with her brother instead, Jessica makes a bet to prove that within a week, Steven is totally over Jill. With high stakes, Jessica forces Elizabeth to help with her matchmaking (especially since if they lose the bet, it‘s Liz‘s new camera that gets handed over!). A fun scheme-filled story!

After finishing Mara‘s recent #BOTM pick, I wanted to check out more from Mara, so I started listening to her debut! With multiple timelines & perspectives, there were a few transitional moments where I wished I was physically reading it. But it immediately reeled me in when Sylvie, just before returning from maternity leave and woken in the night, thinks she sees a body floating in the pond next door! The neighbor‘s story emerges all with twists!

Great Aunt Helen visits #SweetValley & surprises the Wakefield kids with $100 to spend. Jessica teaches Lila a lesson generosity & treats her friends to join her on her shopping spree, spending all her money on treats & trinkets with nothing much for herself. Liz adds the money to her new camera fund & a hardcover Amanda Howard book, sparking her to find her own mystery to solve while Steven wastes his on impressing his crush with a fancy date!

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 This is the book review that comment was intended for! I can see why this is a favorite! 😊 3w
JenlovesJT47 Yes this is a fun one! I read this one over and over again when I was a kid 🤓👵🏻 3w

This overview of horror from the 17th century to the present with a focus on America is a well-researched & cited read. I hoped for something a bit more like Grady Hendrix‘s (with several mentions, but not for this nonfiction) PAPERBACKS FROM HELL that blends entertainment with additions to my TBR. This focuses on the most popular bits of horror (containing spoilers!) & could do with some more compacted structure rather than 8 lengthy chapters!

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I can see why this is a favorite of yours! It was so fun!! 3w
JenlovesJT47 I‘m a big fan of Grady Hendrix! My favorite is The Final Girl Support Group. I read the whole thing in one sitting! And Horrorstor is awesome as well. 3w
JenlovesJT47 I haven‘t read Paperbacks From Hell yet but it‘s on my list! Might grab the audiobook this month, it‘s a good time for it. 3w

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Oh, oops, I meant to send that comment for The Wakefields Strike It Rich— Litsy must not have updated my screen when I hit comment! 😳 But I‘m also a Grady Hendrix fan!! I have been saving The Final Girl Support Group for this month!! But I would recommend getting a physical copy of Paperbacks From Hell so that you can see the fun cover artwork without pausing to google! 3w
JenlovesJT47 Ooh ok good idea! I already got the audiobook on Hoopla but I‘m going to grab a physical copy of it too 👍🏻 3w

Brooke and Her Rock Star Mom | Francine Pascal, Kate William
post image
Pickpick

All of Sweet Valley is Coco Crazy for this new Franglais singer & her hit singles! Brooke Dennis is as big of a fan as anyone else—even volunteering to write a Sixers article about the singer… but her voice seems oddly familiar… Meanwhile, her mom, stepdad & new baby half-sister are staying at the Sweet Valley Plaza after Brooke hasn‘t seen them in a year! But they can‘t have public fun because her mom‘s new job requires her family to stay secret!

JenlovesJT47 Man the Wakefields sure do go to school with a lot of rock star‘s kids, don‘t they? 😆 3w
TorieStorieS Well, even the rich and famous want that Sweet Valley lifestyle & weather! 🤣 3w

Thanks to #SweetValley, I‘m a sucker for twin stories! This #KindleUnlimited title revolves around fraternal twins May & June—& their mother who passed 3 years earlier. June‘s been missing for a year & while mourning in her room, 20 year old May learns that their mother went missing at 19–on the same date that June disappeared! She starts her own investigation, uncovering family secrets along the way. Strains plausibility but remains entertaining!

JenlovesJT47 Stacked! 🤓👯‍♀️ 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 The audio is included through KindleUnlimited and the Australian accent is fun!! 3w
JenlovesJT47 Ooh yay, I‘m gonna see if I can track it down at the library! 3w
TorieStorieS I try to read/listen to at least two #KU titles a month so I feel like my subscription is worth it! Every time I cancel it, then it seems like whatever I‘m looking for is in their program! 🤣 3w

The Unicorns Go Hawaiian | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

It‘s another #SweetValleyChristmas & though the Wakefields have plans for a skiing trip with both sets of grandparents, Jessica & Mandy Miller enter a recipe contest for the Pineapple People & win a trip to Hawaii! Liz would rather ski, & Jessica insults Lila by inviting Mary Wallace instead since Lila‘s already been. Mr. Fowler comes to the rescue & joins them & pays for Lila, Ellen & Janet—along with his new girlfriend, Bambi. Lila hates her!

JenlovesJT47 I was gonna say, is this the one with the girlfriend named Bambi? Yep! Haven‘t read this one in awhile but it‘s a fun one! 3w

I‘ve read & enjoyed McCreight‘s earlier novels. I‘m always a sucker for a disappearance story, so I made this my August #BOTM pick! But despite some multimedia & mother/daughter perspectives, I never warmed to either (or really any!) character. The plot‘s twist didn‘t pack the punch I hoped for & I don‘t think it will stick long in my memory as I never felt eager to pick it up any time I set it down. I didn‘t hate it but I didn‘t like it either!

The Big Party Weekend | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Alice & Ned plan a week in Mexico—& their kids are delighted to be trusted alone. Naturally, they plan a party & are horrified when the night before their parents leave, May shows up to babysit! With a whistle & strict rules, even Saint Elizabeth is pushed to her limits. To get May out of the house, Steven pretends to run away & gives May fake directions to pick him up (the 1991 pub date obvious here!). A food fight ensues, but it all works out!

JenlovesJT47 The next one is one of my favorites, The Wakefields Strike It Rich. I read that one over and over again and fantasized about someone handing me $100 bucks lol. 😆 3w
JenlovesJT47 Actually I think that‘s number 56 but you know what I mean lol. 3w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I love when Great Aunt Helen shows up! I don‘t know if I remember her much from the high school books, but she definitely is fun in the kids and this series! 3w

For this part of the #ThreeListThursday / #TLT organized by @dabbe these are my three top picks! But, I must say, I was shocked Jaws didn‘t make this part of the list!!! That‘s my favorite movie of all, really! So I guess Monstro from Pinocchio will have to do! 🤣

Thanks for the tag, @JenlovesJT47 !

JenlovesJT47 Ooh I love L.A. Confidential, I‘m due for a rewatch soon ❤️ 4w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 It‘s a good one! It was available on Netflix for a while, and that‘s where we re-watched it last! 4w
dabbe Maybe JAWS might be in the top 100? This list was #300-201. We still have 200 to go! 🤩 Thanks for playing and sharing! 🖤🧡🖤 4w

TorieStorieS @dabbe Oh I guess I thought it was alphabetical so I went through I-K twice to make sure I didn‘t miss it! 🤣 4w
dabbe It is alphabetical--until the top 100. Then we'll go in order of least-best (100) to best (1). I'm thinking JAWS just has to be in the top 100. It's too good not to be, right? 🤩 4w
TorieStorieS @dabbe Ahhh, that must explain it!! 🤞🦈 4w

I expected something a little spookier and a bit less fantastical than what this one ended up being, but the strong audio performance helped suck me into this hard to categorize listen. The titular town, with its regulated population of exactly 200, lives (& dies) by their regulations, ordinances and dark traditions. Osira has long considered her family lucky but the 45 year old widow‘s luck runs out as this begins. A discussion starter for sure!

The Slime that Ate Sweet Valley | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Mr. Bowman ends the school slump by letting the 6th grade make their own movie! The runny-nosed Leslie Forsythe secretly wants to act but Lila & Jessica battle it out for the lead role in their horror/comedy/romance about a sentient slime grown by accident. But when Jessica learns she will have to kiss both Randy Mason & Winston Egbert (as the slime!) she‘s happy to let Leslie lock lips with those nerds instead! She gets revenge on Lila, too! Fun!

American Rapture | CJ Leede

Pickpick

After Leeds‘s debut novel, I was curious to dive into this. Set across Wisconsin, this spooky & tense listen is gripping, tense, full of action, blood & even tears. Sheltered Sophie rebels against her strict Catholic parents in small ways—an illicit fiction novel checked out & a yearning for the twin brother they sent away. But when a terrifying pandemic erupts, it gives Sophie the chance to see the wider world & find out what & who matter to her.

TorieStorieS But beware— major TW for what happens to the dog! 4w
Erinreadsthebooks @TorieStorieS Thank you for the TW. I was looking at this one bc it may be an Aardvark pick, but anything happening to a dog is a no-go 🙅‍♀️ 7d
TorieStorieS @Erinreadsthebooks Yeah, I was driving and was literally sobbing on the highway… it was beyond brutal… the audio had some extras from the author and she did bring it up, saying that she wanted this to be horror, and after losing her dog, she couldn‘t think of anything worse… and honestly, I would not have listened had I known. It was shocking and just awful. 7d

Determined to stop him, petitions fly around the school, then some hazing but Winston‘s crush on Grace Oliver makes him quit until the girls beg for him to return for the competition! Yikes!! This is definitely the scariest, tensest & most stomachache-inducing/ ankle-tingling (so you‘re ready to run!) book so far for the #SpookySeasonReading! The whole idea of an intruder living in your home undetected is terrifying to me, & this book plays well into that. Well-plotted & impossible to put down, this one had me guessing, gasping & cringing! I loved it & am looking forward to catching up on the author‘s back catalog for sure!

Elizabeth the Impossible | Francine Pascal, Jamie Suzanne

Pickpick

Elizabeth wins yet another essay contest— a national one on individuality. The day after the principal announces her win, they learn teachers can nominate candidates as a Model Student. Jessica immediately starts campaigning for her twin. Pamela McDonald‘s constant flattery starts getting to Elizabeth‘s head & she starts going overboard in bossiness & generally being impossible! Even Todd gets annoyed with her attitude! Detention snaps her back!

JenlovesJT47 Liz has perfected that self righteous stare 🧐😆 4w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 For sure!! She goes way over the top here— Alice and Ned even have to pull their coffee out of the trash after Liz and her model student kitchen clean up!🤣 4w
JenlovesJT47 Omg I haven‘t read this one in years! 4w

Bailedbailed

I‘m usually more forgiving of audiobooks but I listened to just under half of this one before ultimately deciding to ditch it. It‘s my third #DNF of the year and I don‘t regret switching to something else at all. I don‘t know why one blurb called this “wildly hilarious” but I never even cracked a smile. I found it to be shockingly dull and I just couldn‘t care less about any of the Reed family. Not even the Montreal setting could spice this up!

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Indeed!! It‘s taken me a long time get more comfortable bailing on books, but you know when it‘s a relief to set it aside that it was the right choice!!🤣 4w
JenlovesJT47 I hardly ever do it either. I do it maybe once or twice a year. And I used to not rate them on Goodreads either but now if I read at least 20% and bail I‘ll give it a one star rating 😆 4w
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yeah, I made a goodreads shelf for my DNF books just so that they are easier to keep track of for that reason! 4w
