A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

Pickpick

A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L‘Engle is a wonderful science fiction novel that won the John Newbery Medal! This story will definitely get kids thinking, and I can ensure they will be engaged the entire time they are reading! This story is about a high school girl, Meg Murray, who finds herself on an adventure through time and space with her younger brother, Charles and her best friend, Calvin.

Sabrinac The three children are on a mission to rescue Meg and Charles‘s father, a talented scientist, who is trapped on another evil planet. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y
Sabrinac https://www.readworks.org/lessons/grade6/wrinkle-time/lesson-1. This link will take you to the lesson plan I would use with this novel. The lesson plan has students find and define words from this book they do not know. This book would be a great Independent Read (IR). 6y
Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I would use would be number 43, Have students underline or highlight key words or important facts in written assignments. Since students will be independently reading this book, they should highlight which words they want to define. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I would use would be number 2.1, Clarify vocabulary and symbols. I would use this strategy because, I will help students learn the knew vocabulary they highlight as they read. I can walk around and check for understanding. 6y
MadisonFeltis Very thorough post! Thank you! 6y
Sabrinac @MadisonFeltis Thank you!! 6y
SavannahP0930 I read this as my lit circle book and I agree with your UDL because it can be hard to follow at times! 6y

The students will fill out a reading log, and they have fill the entire log out in order for the train to make its way to the North Pole. Children will feel motivated and encouraged to read and they will have fun! 6y
Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I would use would be number 38, Assign short readings for homework. This goes hand in hand with my lesson plan because, children will be asked to fill out these logs at home. 6y
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I will use will be number 7.1, Optimize individual choice and autonomy. I will allow my students to choose whatever books they would like to read for their logs! 6y

I will show my students the worksheet they will be completing and I will demonstrate how I expect them to label the worksheet but competing one label. 6y
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I will use will be number 3.3, Guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation. Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I will use will be number 19, Establish predictable classroom routines through the use of an outline on the board or bulleting board. I will use this because, I can display the fish decorations with the classroom rules each student comes up with. I will display them all over the classroom to remind the children of the rules they established! 6y

This hilarious, colorful book will have children (and adults) of all ages laughing non stop. When I was first introduced to this story in class, I knew I would purchase it to be in my future classroom library. Children will love reading about why each crayon has decided to quit. Whether it be because they are short and stubby due to being used too much, or because they haven‘t left the crayon box at all!

Sabrinac In my opinion, this is a must have in all classroom library‘s! #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

A picture Book of Rosa Parks by David A. Adler is an amazing biography on the movement Rosa Parks made on December 1st, 1955. AJones This informational book was read in my RA small group on Monday, and I have to say I was very impressed. Clinton highlights 13 inspirational women that persisted for change and equality. Your UDL and ELs are spot-on. Excellent post! #GirlPower! 7y
Sabrinac @AJones Thank you so much!! I was also very impressed with this book, it is very inspiring! 7y
hannahl I have previously read this book and I think it is such an important book to have in your classroom library. It teaches young students about important female roles that had such a positive impact in the society. Great post! 7y
Sabrinac @hannahl I completely agree with you!! Thank you so much! 7y
DrSpalding @Sabrinac this is my favorite post of yours yet and you have had many excellent posts. What a great idea to have the students document facts; I see a FlipBook with each person's name and facts along with a picture of them. This would be an excellent interdisciplinary activity! 7y
Sabrinac @DrSpalding I‘m glad you enjoyed this post! Thank you so much for your positive feedback Dr. Spalding! 6y
Sabrinac My students can partner read (PR) this book and then we can discuss it as a class after. 6y

The Caldecott Award winner, The Man Who Walked Between The Towers, by Mordical Gerstein, is a great book to read to your students when informing them about 9/11. This book is filled with suspense, and sadness as we learn about the story of Philippe Petit, a man who walked between the World Trade Towers in 1974. I will definitely use this book as I teach my future students about the tragedy that happened on 9/11. #UCFLAE3414F17 🇺🇸

Sabrinac The ESOL strategy I would use with this book would be number 1, Teach questioning for clarification. I would use number 1 because, I know my students would have a lot of questions about what the World Trade Towers were, and what exactly happened to them. 7y
Sabrinac The UDL strategy I would use with this book would be number 7.2 which is to Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity. I would use this particular strategy because, I want my students to understand how important this book truly is because it informs is readers about 9/11. We are also able to learn about a person who really did walk across these two towers. 7y
Sabrinac https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/man-who-walked.... This link will take you to the scholastic website with a lesson plan for grades 3-5 involving this book. The lesson has students create a chart and define character traits the main character has. I think this is a great way to keep the students engaged while reading. 7y

Grace For President by Kelly S. DiPucchio is a wonderful, empowering read! This story is about a girl, Grace, who is astounded to find out there has never been a girl president before. Grace is determined to become president at Woodrow Wilson Elementary! This story teaches students to be bold and never give up on the goals they have. I hope my reviews has pushed some of you to read this adorable, realistic fiction book! #UCFLAE3414F17

Sabrinac I would use the ESOL strategy number 4, which is to link the lesson topic to students' prior knowledge. I would have my students discuss the background knowledge they have on elections. 7y
Sabrinac I would use UDL 8.1, Heighten salience of goals and objectives to teach my students to always follow their dreams and never give up on a goal! 7y
Sabrinac Grace for president is also a New York Times Best Seller, another great reason to read this book!!! 7y

Sabrinac https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pinterest.com/amp/pin/382102349604998741/. This website will take you to a lesson plan on Pinterest! It has the students draw themselves as presidents and then list adjectives that describe good readers! I really love how artsy and fun this lesson is! 7y
Karlee.Diamond This is such a great overview, and resourceful use of strategies! I have never read the book, but I see it every week floating around Dr. Spalding's class! Maybe I'll give it a read! 7y
Sabrinac @Karlee.Diamond Thank you so much!! You should pick it up and read it one day for sure(: 7y
DrSpalding It is worth the read. Your character map resource is a great one to get students thinking about what it takes to be a quality leader. I must say, it warms my heart to see these posts being influential in your peers' decisions to pick up certain books. You are making a difference!❤️📚 7y

What Do You Do With An Idea is an inspiring read that won an Independent Publishers Gold Book Award. The author takes you through the adventure one young boy has when he discovers and idea he has. Throughout the story, the boy grows confident in his ability to keep his idea, and at the end realizes that his ideas can change the world. I would love to include this book in my future classroom because, it teaches children to believe in themselves.

Sabrinac http://meramecchoiceart.blogspot.com/2015/08/what-do-you-do-with-idea.html (This website takes you to an activity you can use in the classroom, where children are able to post the ideas they have and share them on their class bulletin board.) 7y
Sabrinac UDI: 8.1 Heighten salience of goals and objectives. UDI: 9.1 Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. ESOL: 3 Encourage self-talk (positive thinking) by encouraging students to always believe in themselves and the ideas they create. 7y
