Madeleine Altimari is a sassy, smart-mouthed nine-year-old and an aspiring jazz singer, inwardly mourning the recent death of her mother. Little does she know that on Christmas Eve Eve she is about to have the most extraordinary day - and night - of her life. After bravely facing down some mean-spirited classmates and a galling rejection at school, Madeleine doggedly searches for Philadelphia's legendary jazz club The Cat's Pajamas, where she's determined to make her on-stage debut. Meanwhile, her fifth grade teacher Sarina Greene is nervously looking forward to a dinner party that will reunite her with an old high school crush. And across town at The Cat's Pajamas, club owner Jack Lorca discovers that his beloved haunt may have to close forever . . . As these three lost souls search for love, music and hope on the snow-covered streets of Philadelphia, together they will discover life's endless possibilities over the course of one magical night. A vivacious, charming and moving debut, 2am At The Cat's Pajamas will swell your heart and have you laughing out loud.

This book is why I love reading 🥰 - to linger in the moments we miss each day, that add up to a lifetime.
This may be the one to shake me out of my slump 🤞🏻 - it‘s the first book in a while I just couldn‘t tear myself away from.
Thanks for the random pick, @Caterina for my Bingo/Make Me Read It! 🙂

A much-belated review—but I enjoyed this. Very slice-of-life, so if you‘re looking for a gripping plot all wrapped up nicely at the end, then this is not for you. But I found it hilarious and charming, and I just fell in love with Madeleine and Lorca and Sarina and Ben. Thanks are due to many Litsy reviews for putting this on my radar, and an impulse library checkout for getting it onto my February reads! #blameitonlitsy

Still on my TBR - Fifth grader Madeleine is an aspiring jazz singer. The Cat‘s Pajamas is a Philly jazz club on the brink of closing. I‘m hoping these two worlds collide at 2 a.m. 😀

The blurb says: “Over the course of one magical night, three lost souls will search for love, music and hope in the snow-covered streets of Philadelphia...” Sold 😀

This could fulfill the Popsugar prompt: Book That Takes Place In A Day.

A very enjoyable book. Charming characters that stir compassion in the reader, an interesting storyline, and a couple unexpected twists. Really captures the feeling of gritty city life, while also demonstrating the importance of a tight-knit community. Takes place at Christmas time, so although it's not really a Christmas book, it suits the time of year well. A good measure of humor to boot.

VioletBramble I really liked this quirky book. Esp. her descriptions of Philadelphia 11mo

On the eve of Christmas Eve a group of characters go about their lives in Philadelphia getting expelled from school, finding out they are in danger of losing their business, and hoping to reconnect with an old crush. They all find themselves at the The Cat‘s Pajamas at 2 am where their dreams may come true or be reinvented. I went into this book expecting to love it and am disappointed that I didn‘t feel quite so strongly about it. Still a pick.

I finally finished this delightful little book (in spite of Hank‘s attempted distraction). It took me a bit to get engaged with all of the different story lines. Once I did, however, I found myself rooting for them all. I kinda love that the little girl at the center of the story is a bit of jerk. I stayed up way too late last night finishing this, but once I was in the last third of the book I couldn‘t put it down. Charming little book!

This book was just what I needed. A childhood adventure, mixed with real-life adult issues (without being too heavy). You know those stories where you're like "oh, i hope these certain things work out this certain way" but then some of the things work out differently, but in a really nice way? It's like that. I read mostly upsetting books... A wholesome tale with a happy ending was exactly what i needed before spooktober haha.

I loved loved loved this book. It was equal parts sweet and sad. In the novel we follow 3 people over the course of one day who all end up at the Cat's Pajamas at 2 in the morning. I loved that this book didn't sugar coat life and that there were no true happy endings. It was enjoyable and satisfying to see where the day took these characters and how that influenced those around them. #summerreads

This book was delightful. The story takes place over the course of one day. A motherless child, a lovestruck teacher, a school principal who becomes uncharacteristically amorous when a particular child sings, a bar owner and his compadres all try their best to do the thing that will make their heart sing. It‘s witty with great descriptions. I was committed to and will miss all of the characters. Thanks to @AmyG for the book.

This book was totally an impulse buy based on the cover (you can't really tell, but it's sparkly 😍). Madeleine is a 9 year old girl, raised in NYC who can't seem to fit in anywhere other than a late night jazz club. She's sassy and independent, and not even an elementary school expulsion can stop her.

The book is set over the period of one day, and has multiple intertwining storylines. Had it just focused more on Madeleine, it would've been a 🤘

Bostonmomx2 What time period is it set in? 2y

Madeline, Serena, Lorca & Alex have an interesting Christmas Eve eve involving Catholic school, old friends and crushes, family ties, oppressive fathers and a Cuban jazz club!
I liked this so much more than I expected! I really got attached to the characters, which is surprising for a short novel. Some of the style elements were clunky on audio, though. I'd read it again!

Guys.

I LOVED this book. I loved all the stories that intertwined into one. It honestly reminded me of August Rush— where you have these characters with mini stories that all come together at the end for something spectacular. I love little Madeline and how damaged but strong she really is. I just loved this book. The end.

monalyisha I remember thinking the ending felt so out of the blue! 2y
Callemarie @monalyisha that probably would be my one critique of the book. I completely agree with you. I was so swept up throughout the whole thing though that I try to forget about the ending haha 2y
Suet624 @monalyisha @Callemarie I just finished the book and was confused by the ending too. I looked at the beginning again and there‘s a quote from David Lynch. He talks about places in Philadelphia “where there was so much fear and crime that just for a moment there was an opening to another world.” I think the end referred to her being transported to that different world by the beauty of the singing. I can‘t pinpoint it, but this wasn‘t an out-and-out pick for me. Still, it wasn‘t a complete bust either. There were some moments that I really enjoyed. I liked how the various plots intermingled and met up at, you guessed it, The Cat's Pajamas. The plot was well-constructed but just didn't resonate with me. I initially gave this book 3/5 stars, but as I mulledbut over further, I realized that I really thought it was just okay. So, 2/5 ⭐️ it is.

emilyhaldi I was also slightly disappointed with this one 2y

A short sweet read that occurs over the course of one night (Xmas eve eve). A young girl whose mother has died longs to sing and has even her smallest expectations met with disappointment. But on this night her life intertwined with that of her teacher, some jazz musicians, and her principal and she and they find some magic. (The magical realism bits did not work for me, nor did one repeated metaphor which fell flat). Overall a fun read.

First book of 2018. This quirky tale involves interweaving destinies on one magical night. Madeleine is a 9 year old aspiring singer who wants nothing more than to be onstage of a jazz club that‘s about to be closed down unless the owner can come up with some cash, while her teacher searches for love with an old friend. Written in a witty, bouncy style. I really enjoy compressed narratives. The story is sweet without being saccharine.

monalyisha Whenever I think of the word “bouncy” I think of Roald Dahl‘s assessment of Gene Wilder‘s performance in “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory”: “bouncy & pretentious.” 😅 Also, I liked this book but I found the end to be so weird/sudden! 2y

This is a total #blamelitsy read! It was not on my radar at all until I saw it all over Litsy last Christmas. I intended to finish on Christmas Eve but Christmas craziness and travel pushed it to today. It was a total delight and helped me make Christmas last just a bit longer 🎄

Nat_Reads This one was a surprise hit for me! 2y

A precious story about how people‘s paths cross on a single ordinary night. And how ordinary nights can still be magical. Great book for week of Christmas!

I finally finished this cozy, jazzy little novel. It was just what I wanted as a holiday-ish read. And the time timing was perfect... this book ends on Christmas Eve (which is today)! ❤🎄

mrsmarch I‘m reading it too! Just getting started. 2y

I started reading this book two days before my daughter's 10th birthday. What are the odds of that happening?

Drnkpnkprincess I love when I pick up a book and they mention something random, and unplanned that is going on in another aspect of my life. Deja vu-ish. Happy birthday to your daughter!!!! (in 2 days!) 2y
Ncostell @Drnkpnkprincess I know, it's like some cosmic alignment that makes you pick up that book at that time. Thank you for the birthday shout out to my daughter! 2y
