Burning Your Boats
Burning Your Boats: Collected Short Stories | Angela Carter
17 posts | 11 read | 25 to read
WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY SALMAN RUSHDIE As well as her eight novels, Angela Carter published four wonderful collections of short stories during her lifetime, and contributed stories to several anthologies. The stories were scattered amongst different publishers, and a couple of the volumes are now out of print. In Burning your Boats they are gathered for the first time; this is a key collection and a major event for Angela Carter aficionados.

“To these upland woodsmen, the Devil is as real as you or I. More so; they have not seen us nor know that we exist, but the Devil they glimpse often in graveyards, those bleak and touching townships of the dead where the graves are marked with . . . small, votive offerings, little loaves, sometimes a cake that the bears come lumbering from the margins of the forest to snatch away.”

I read a short story by Angela Carter for a college class, can‘t remember what story or anything about it, but I remember I loved it and wanted to read more of her. -Becca

#30DaysofReadathon Countdown 26:
I probably post this book every time there's talk of #shortstories but, you know, Angela Carter! This book contains four collections plus early works and three otherwise uncollected stories. Also, the cover of my edition is so fabulously unapologetically vulgar. It's perfect.

ValerieAndBooks I have one of her novels in my TBR ! 7y
Leniverse @ValerieAndBooks I have one of her novels, but haven't read it yet. I'm a bit afraid to be disappointed, as she is generally considered master of the short story rather than the novel. 7y

Weird, strange, wonderful, feminist, feral, funny, gross, erotic, sensual, magical, fantastical, mythic. Angela Carter may be my favorite short story writer.

LauraJ I tried to check out some of her books from the library and they had NOTHING! Bastards!!! 7y

I'm tired and ready for bed... But I see that there's one more photo challenge!

Must... do... photo... challenge...

I don't have the words to do justice to this collection of short stories except to tell you that it's fantastic, bizarre, grotesque, magical; please read it. #shortstorycollections #ReadingWomenMonth

This book contains all of Angela Carter's short stories. All of them! Including some that are not in any of her other collections. And how perfectly Carter-esque isn't that cover? ❤️ Definitely one of my favourite books of short stories, ever. #READATHONSTORIES

Cool book and cover alert 🚨. It's been awhile since I read this gem. With the wonderful cover and a new biography about her that I've heard raves about coming out I thought it was time to bring it back.

Welcome to our discussion of Angela Carter's first short story and the last of our #ghostsoflitsy short stories, round one! What did everyone think of "The Man Who Loved A Double Bass?" How does it handle the themes of obsession? This is personally one of my favorites - it's so weird and just so creepy/haunting at the same time!

MMenefee I loved this story! 8y
MMenefee The more Carter I read, the more I understand Jameson's obsession with Lola. 8y

Announcing our first three short stories for #ghostsoflitsy ! I tried to pick a few that were more spine tingly than anything (and the Carter is plain eerie). Both the James and the Hawthorne are public domain, and the book here has the Carter. Again, this is just for fun, so read one, read them all! I'll edit this post with links a little later. I figure we'll aim to discuss the James on Wednesday. #scaretober

Woman Crush Wednesday! I can never resist a good hashtag! I still need to finish this one, but Carter was so important when finishing my creative writing thesis in 2014. I love her ability to merge the sensual with the uncanny, as if it's something we're not meant to see. It's powerful magic!

BekahB Yes! She is amazing! 8y
BookishFeminist Love Angela Carter! Almost picked her today. :) 8y
brendanmleonard @BookishFeminist 😂 another one to the list of books we have in common! 8y
