I enjoyed this twisted tale of Mulan. Mulan travels to the underworld to stop Shang from dying. The adventure Mulan, Shang, and Shang's guardian took was wrapped in chinese mythology and I appreciated it a lot!
The beginning was slow to start, but once Mulan got to the underworld, it picked up; and it was hard for me to stop reading. I thought the book tired the movie in well. I was upset Mushu wasn't along for the ride but by the end; it was ok.

A Dream So Dark | L.L. McKinney
Panpan

A Dream So Dark is better than the 1st, but only by a little. I could tell the writing had gotten better but the development of the story did not. At first I enjoyed the Japanese and Anime references but it became cringeworthy when they were over used. Especially when it was used a lot during the first book. By the end of the book we didn't know who the bad girl was and we spent the whole book in confusion as to who she was in the first place.

The Hazel Wood | Melissa Albert
Mehso-so

I didn't like this retelling of Alice in Wonderland, but I didn't hate it either. It was just okay; It wasn't as dark as what I wanted it to be. Some of the names are outlandish, like Vanella, pronounced vanilla. There was a kidnapping and some scenes that were just so silly. I was disappointed I read the whole book and one thing wasn't answered that I think was kind of a big thing, but maybe it'll be in the next book.

JAY-Z: Made in America | Michael Eric Dyson
Mehso-so

I don't know how I feel about this book. I thought it would be about Jay-Z; which it was, but it was mostly about America, and how it shaped Jay-Z. Hence: made in America part. Other people were mentioned in the book as well, like Biggie, Nas, LeBron James and MLK. Some at great length, which I don't think I liked too much.

I think Jay-Z: Made in America is a book I'll come back to visit without any expectations and I'm might enjoy it more.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I didn't like this book.
Zelie the protagonist, wasn't what I thought she would be. She was supposed to be the hero, but wasn't heroic to me. I didn't feel much character growth from her. I enjoyed Amari, the princess, so much; she showed up & out, & had the most character growth. Tzain, Zelie's brother was also a good character, and I felt he needed a bigger presence in the book. Inan, the princes was horrible!

WomanistBibliophile Oh I love Zélie! The character development in the second book for both her and Amari is very interesting 4y
essence_dionne @WomanistBibliophile interesting.. how so? I don't plan to read the second, but want to hear as many opinions as possible 4y

Okay. So about a few months ago I finished The Fellowship of the Ring, and I was quite surprised Gandalf died! As much as I've heard about this character and knowing there would be two more parts, I wasn't expecting that at all.
Does he come back to life? You can tell me, I won't be upset lol.

I love this book!
And that's all I can say because I'm not really good at book reviews lol.

ElizaMarie Ha! I am horrible at book reviews. I feel like people done read mine because they are so -- “this was great!“ no real depth in my “reviews“, anyway but hearing just other people loving it helps me.

anyway I picked this up just haven't started it. I had too many library holds come in at once, so I put my purchased books on the back burner. I am so excited to pick this one up soon!
5y
essence_dionne @ElizaMarie when you get back to it, come back so we can chat!! 5y

Along Came a Spider | James Patterson
Pickpick

my review from Goodreads:
I gave Along Came a Spider 4 stars mostly because the main story , in my opinion was really good! If I didn't focus on it then, maybe this would have gotten a 3! The relationship and love scenes between Cross and Jezzie were unbelievable and made me cringe.
#goodreads #alongcameaspider

tpixie These early Alex Cross books are great! ( and a lot creepier than the newer more mainstream audience in the series) 5y
essence_dionne Thank you @tpixie for mentioning be that. I was wondering when or if they would do that! I hope to read the next 4 books 5y

I was excited for this retelling of Alice in Wonderland with a black girl as Alice, but it didn't live up to what it could've been. The prologue was fun! I loved the Sailor Moon reference, but as I continue to read, they kept popping up and I became annoyed. I couldn't tell if this was written for today's teens or for the millenniums. Wonderland was lackluster; not enough description. Which was really disappointing BECAUSE ITS WONDERLAND
#books

ShyBookOwl I know!!! I felt soooo let down. She relied way too much on references, didn't describe the settings very well... It seemed like she had a really big idea but zero execution planned. 5y
essence_dionne @ShyBookOwl when her friend mentioned her being Buffy, I was almost done with this book, lol! I have so many issues with this, but unfortunately we don't get that much space.. Poor Chess, he wasnt devoloped well.. the author did all those Sailor Moon references and didn't focus on the cutest one. When Chess dressed as Tuxedo Mask for the party 5y
ShyBookOwl @essence_dionne Haha so true. The first direct Buffy reference threw me but the one that nearly killed it for me was describing the twins as teenage Spikes from Buffy... really? Just describe them, please! I was mad lol 5y

essence_dionne @ShyBookOwl Yesssss! So annoying... Like what teen today knows who they are...😂 I mean, I'm sure they're a few, but not a lot. L.L. wrote this book for herself lol.
