Storm Front
Storm Front: Book one of The Dresden Files | Jim Butcher
For Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name.

I didn't realize that the narrator of The Dresden Giles was James Marsters! He has nice voice to listen too. I'm not sure that I will like the books but giving it a shot since it's been on my TBR forever. There was a prompt in a challenge for a male author so i picked it. Anybody a fan of the series?

Ruthiella I think @julesG is reading them ALL! 7d
Erinsuereads I finished them at the end of last year. It was a struggle to get into them but they have become one of my all time favorite series 7d
InkedBookworm13 Yes! I haven't read them all but I have enjoyed the ones I have read so far. My brother in law has the whole series on audiobook and he loves them. 7d
julesG @Ruthiella Yes, I'm making my way through them. The first had been on my physical TBR for ages. I struggled a bit getting into the books, but they get better further down the line. I've read the 10th book last week. And yes, the audio narration was the deciding factor in the end. It's fun listening to James Marsters. 6d
Laughterhp I really enjoy this series and love it on audio! I think I have 1 more book to read of this series. 6d

Entertaining Urban Fiction.

Harry might be a bit old-fashioned, but I can see myself spending more time with him.

This was my irl bookclub's pick for the month. I thought the magic system was super interesting & the main character was delightfully snarky. It played on an old noir theme with a very dark magical murder to solve. There were some issues with misogynistic descriptions about women & not giving enough background info on some aspects of the magical world. But as first in a series and one of this author's earliest books, there's room for improvement.

Witty, entertaining, magical, crime, sarcasm and a talking skull named Bob. This book was so good! I was recommended this book years ago but never read it because I didn't think I'd like it. It is such a good story. Think witches and law and order. It is a five star and I WILL be reading the rest of the series!

shanaqui I read the first couple of books in this series long long ago and was promised the series gets amazing etc etc, but I just can't hang on through books that don't grab me for a payoff way down the line! (Also, Harry Dresden as a character drives me bananas.) 13mo

Thank you for this #Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView and for the tag @Branwen 😀

1. I‘d gladly read about both witches and wizards! 🧙‍♀️🧙‍♂️

2. I‘m cheating a bit and instead of a book, I‘m going with my favorite series… Harry Dresden! Sure, most people would pick that “other” Harry‘s series, but the tagged book was my first foray into urban fantasy, and I loved reading about a snarky wizard interacting with all kinds of paranormal creatures! 👻🧛‍♀️

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 🖤🧙‍♀️🧙‍♂️ 1y

🎧 This will be my 3rd time reading this series.

I loved this TV series so much I read the books. Twice.

This is a good start to this series. You get to know who & what Harry is. You meet Bob, Murphy, Marcone, Morgan the warden, Carmichael, Mister (Harry‘s cat) & Susan the reporter.

Hearts are exploding out of people‘s chests, a frog faced demon attacks, giant scorpions & there‘s a new drug that makes your 3rd eye open.

Great series!

A witty fantasy story with adult themes. If Harry Potter grew up to be a broke and virtually friendless PI…. A lot of things going on with the plot, almost too much.

Traci1 I think this one is the weakest in the series. They do get better. 1y
Nebklvr @Traci1 I have the second one. Will give it a try. 1y
SilverShanica The farther you get the better the series gets. It‘s one of those series where there is a lot set out in this book that seems minor, but that comes back later on and is a major thing. 1y
KimHM The series definitely gets better, not so obvious and lazy re: character development. 1y
Nebklvr @SilverShanica @KimHM The second one was better but too violent for me. Thanks for the info and happy reading! 1y

I started the Dresden Files this year and it has quickly become one of my favorite series I‘m currently reading. So far I‘ve read the first 3 books, 2 graphic novels, and a short story. I love the sarcasm and the way the characters act but that might be because I‘m from Chicago and it seems kind of nostalgic.

This was a bit of a meh read that went over to nope at times. But at least it was fast to read. I really didn‘t appreciate the way the female characters were depicted and I didn‘t care about Harry at all. But the magic system was cool and the plot was just interesting enough for me to keep reading. However I think it‘s safe to say that I won‘t be picking up the rest of the series.

This is a blame it on Litsy book. I saw a review and thought I have to read this. I loved the MC Harry Dresden. He has just the right amount of humility and coolness to go along with his wizardry that I found him fascinating. The plot was good and it was fast paced. Great start to the series. 4⭐

An average good book. I liked the magical elements such as The Sight and the soulgazing. It reminded me a bit of the Rivers of London series, although more cynical (?)

I know that a lot of people love this series but it wasn't for me. I didn't establish any bond with the main character (and great characters are as important as a great plot to me). Another reason was that I didn't really enjoy the story arc; I was lost a bit and too many things happened seemingly randomly; I felt as if the lore and the world itself wasn't well thought through. It felt as if the author had a random checklist of things to include.

This book was awesome. It took some time for me to get used to the writing, not because it was complicated but because it was so unique. By the end, the writing grew on me & I loved it. My only complaint with the story was the irrelevance of the "all powerful" white council. There were instances when I hd to suspend disbelief but am letting it is pass in favor of my enjoyment percentage which was quite high.

50% in, I love the humour, the writing is different than I am used to. Strangely enough I am gripped by the story though I can't pinpoint to exactly what it is that I am liking or not liking about this book. It's a fast read so I am hoping to finish it soon enough. 🤞🤞

I don't dislike this book but it's also not doing much for me and I'm starting to wonder if I should be reading it instead of listening. This is the first time I've experienced an adverse reaction to a narrator. I don't really have time to switch to reading it though...I need audiobooks to help me get through everything for #BookSpinBingo this month! 🙃

Can't decide if I should give it 3 or 4 stars. The story was enjoyable, and I loved the magic system. But it was a bit too fast-paced for me. And I always had a feeling that something was lacking.

I‘m not sure how I feel about the story, but I do like Harry Dresden. I tried the audio months ago and had trouble with it, so I waited a while and read it on my Kindle. It‘s clear that the book is early in the author‘s career because the world, the magic system, the characters, and their relationships aren‘t fully developed yet. I don‘t take it lightly that this series is so well-loved, so I‘ll probably give the next book a chance.

I just finished this and I have to say I'm slightly disappointed.

Does the series get better? Is it worth continuing?

I didn't dislike it I just expected more.

vlwelser I heard it gets better. But I only made it through the first 4. 3y
Ruthiella I‘ve also heard it gets better. I stopped after book one. Every female (human or otherwise) wanted to have sex with Harry. It was the equivalent of “the girl who doesn‘t know she‘s pretty” and it put me off. 😕 3y
xicanti I read the first three and never felt like it got better. 3y
Karkar I stopped after the first one and so did my mom. there are so many people who really like them - but I just cannot make myself pickup the next one. 3y
swynn I read the first and found it just okay. Then I read Skin Game when it was nominated for a Hugo a few years ago, and just found it longer and ramblier. I've heard so many times that it gets better that I assume it must be true, but that I am blind to its merits. Fortunately, there are plenty of other books ... 3y

The Dresden Files series has been recommended to me and first book didn't disappoint. I really liked the idea, a wizard solving crimes and indeed it makes for a very good read. What could have been a very short book (wizard uses magic, crime solved, the end) turns out to be a very entertaining and captivating page turner. Already have second book lined up.
