This was a painful read but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I found this pic showing what a modern day Alex might look like. #persephonebooks

Delafield addresses the plight that #singleladies faced in early 20th century England. The MC, Alex, is awkward and outspoken. She is not the first choice of many suitors and when offered marriage to the one boy remaining, says no. "Theoretically she would tell herself that she would give all, trust, confidence, love, friendship, and ask for nothing in return. Practically she suffered tortures of jealousy if the loved one adressed a word or a smile to any but herself, and cried herself to sleep night after night in the certainty of loving infinitely more than she was loved." - 1919, Percephone book no. 13.
For today's #septphotochallenge I'm going back a few years to my discovery of #PersephoneBooks. I found Consequences to be compulsively readable. Alex is an awkward Victorian girl with a great deal of privilege and sorely lacking in guidance & common sense. We read along as Alex makes a train wreck of her life - this is not a happy tale. Still, one can sympathize with her and this is a well written book. #couldntputitdown #somethingforsept
