My second favorite Tim Powers book, after The Anubis Gates. It has everything: pirates, zombies, ghosts, shipwrecks, and curses. The book is far, far, far better than the movie version they did with Johnny Depp as part of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Bookwomble Yes! This is an excellent book, and as you say, far superior to the films. 5mo
Blueberry That was a fun book. 5mo
BookmarkTavern What an exciting cover! Thanks for answering! 5mo
swynn I love this one too. I remember being told that it was being made into a film, then the other show dropped: " ... for the next PotC movie." I knew then what would happen, only it was even worse. 5mo

I was looking forward to reading this book, since I love stories set on sea. But it turned out to be a rather boring book. Even though the idea of the story itself is nice, Powers' way of telling his story just didn't appeal to me. It all was very superficial, with no atmosphere and very flat characters. I was mostly glad when the book finally reached it's end...

🎧 Oh, wow! I love this story of piratical, swashbuckling adventure, fantastical visions conjured up with voodoo, evocative descriptions of the seas and swamps...

BUT Bronson Pinchot let me down. I had to work *hard* to get past his narration. He barrels into the story too fast, his French patois is labored, and his British accents are ridiculous.

I would love to come back to this one day but in print instead.

🎧 Starting this fantasy nautical tale today (narrated by Bronson Pinchot.) Powers sold the rights to this novel to Disney who mutated it into a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I‘m sure the book will be better 😜

PirateJenny This book is so so great!!!! It was the second Powers I read and confirmed he was an author deserving of becoming hooked on. Have some rum and enjoy! 7y

At the end of a long day, there's not much that beats climbing into bed with a book and a cup of tea! 😌

There is so much #mysticsvoodoo or voudoun in this book. How else do you get undead pirates? And now you're beginning to see why all Powers's fans saw a lot of similarities. This is my copy from when the book first came out and then one with a cover I couldn't pass up. #PiratesLife #WhatAWayToLive

CrowCAH Great covers!!! 😍 8y
JazzFeathers Undead pitetes sounds pretty intetesting 😆 8y
TheBookDream This is the book the 4th POTC movie was based on, yes? 8y

PirateJenny @TheBookDream yes! I've been on an email list for the author for years and when the first movie came out we all noticed a lot of similarities. And commented on it every movie. We found out with the 4th movie that Powers (who is on the list--he showed to answer a question and we wouldn't let him go) was approached after the 1st movie and asked if he would sell the rights if the series went beyond a trilogy. We were all happy! 8y
PirateJenny @TheBookDream he is a really nice guy. I (by I I mean the group I was with--mu husband found him in the hotel and by srinks I mean soda) had drinks at a con woth him once. Very very funny. And does his research. I recommend any/all of his books 8y
TheBookDream I'd heard it was based on a book, but didn't know the author. That's really cool! 8y

My version of #theblackpearl I had a friend working at Lucasfilm when the first movie came out. The shirt may be a bit tight these days but it's never going away #PiratesLife #WhatAWayToLive

CrowCAH OMG so jealous! That is sooo cool, having a friend work on POTC TCOTBP!!! What a shirt to have and keep and cherish!!! ☺️ 8y

I don't have a #shipinabottle Will a pirate in a coffin do?

I was a fan of Tim Powers long before the PotC movies came out. There was much discussion after the first movie about how much it resembled On Stranger Tides (on one of those old-fashioned email lists). As much as I enjoyed the movie adaptation, the book is so much better. I can't recommend it enough. Sure there's no Jack Sparrow but Powers does his research.

CrowCAH Sorry, I missed this post. Yes, Jack in a coffin works, great action figure!!! Glad to hear the book isn't so bad, the movie is okay; I'll have to read it some time. 8y

Back to my tbr list for today's prompt. I really need to read this one soon!

brittanyreads I had no idea this inspired Pirates of the Caribbean (: 8y
CrowCAH I did add this to my TBR, since it did inspire the fourth movie, but not sure how closely it will follow the POTC universe. I heard that the movie is loosely based off of the action, with more focus on Blackbeard, in the book and the movie veers in a different direction, throwing Cpt Jack in the action. 8y

"You sure get a lot of books," said the lady in the office when I went to pick these up. "Oh, it's that time of year!" I said breezily, and we both pretended I didn't do this at ALL TIMES of the year
