Liar meets Romeo and Juliet in this Shakespeare-inspired young adult novel about whether to trust yourself when everyone is telling you your instincts are wrong--for fans of Holly Black, Laini Taylor, and Black Swan, by New York Times bestselling author Jacqueline West. Jaye wakes up in the hospital, disoriented, and beset by a slippery morphing of reality into something else. She repeatedly sees a boy who she feels like she knows--but that's impossible. Determined to get back to school and back toA Midsummer Night's Dream, in which she's starring, she lies to her sister, her mom, and her doctors--she's fine, she says. She's fine, she's fine, she's fine. But then on her first day back, she takes a seat in class . . . next to the mysterious boy. Queasy with anxiety ("I can'tsee you," she hisses at him, "because you're not reallyhere"), Jaye realizes this boy is, in fact, real. And he has no idea what she's talking about. Caught between this fascinating, empathetic new kid and her childhood friend turned recent love interest, Jaye begins to notice unnerving similarities between her circumstances and those of some of Shakespeare's most famous plays. Tingling banter and clandestine meet-ups give way to darker, muddier incidents. As things escalate to a frightening pitch, how much of what's happening is real, how much is in Jaye's head, and how much does it matter as she's hurtling toward a fateful end over which she seems to have no control?

Arghtjkd&ke#$@*(. And that‘s how I feel about this book. It gets three stars because I was very interested to see where this book was going to go. It doesn‘t get more because it didn‘t actually go anywhere, even to the very end I was left with thinking someone must have torn out the last pages. This can‘t possibly be the end. It doesn‘t get more because of the illogical and circuitous route the book takes. I am left...unsatisfied.

This book was super trippy and darker than I was expecting but very very good. Like Saving Hamlet, it combines Shakespeare with high school drama (of both the theatre and personal kind). This one is more intense, and the emotions are very raw, but I couldn't put it down. The literary implications of Jaye's hallucinations are FASCINATING.

HS junior Jaye has issues: 1) dead father 2) childhood BFF is back, interested in her AND cast as Oberon to her Titania; 3) Midsummer Night's Dream rehearsals require her full attention; and 4) a skull fracture. Now she is plagued by headaches & visions of Shakespeare, Hamlet, Ophelia, Romeo. Then there's new kid Rob, who looks just like Romeo. What's real? What's not? Great premise + good execution = 👍🏼😎
Ambiguous/confusing ending = 🤔😐

The narrator ponders how her experience of her dad has been invalidated by the way people idealize those who have died. It's the dark side of the all too common saying "don't speak ill of the dead."

BookInMyHands So very true. I had a family member pass away this summer who was not a nice person. I found myself grieving for the person he could have been. My family found it incredibly helpful when I was able to verbalized that. We all had this grief and we were trying to process what it was we were sad about when he had spent his life making others miserable. 8y
andreadmw Powerful words 8y
Hornsby78 I have said before that I am waiting for the day when people can tell the truth about the dead. Instead of living in denial, being able to stand up at a funeral and say, "He was a real son-of-a-bitch. He abused every person in my family and I'm glad he's dead." THAT WOULD BE SO FREEING!! 8y

@TheBookmarkPR awaiting the premiere of the Miss Peregrine movie, when I found this YA novel with an intriguing premise: after a skiing accident leaves her with a fractured skull, Jaye is having hallucinations --of Shakespearean characters! Who can resist?!? #epigraph

YA Audio this was an interesting concept that ended with a big well now what. If you are looking for a tidy story this is not it. I was frustrated that it ended up making no sense and I wouldn't have minded had it all been a delusion of the dying because maybe that was what it was.

What a mindf*ck! A vivid, imaginative portrayal of how chillingly easy it is for a teenage girl to be convinced of her worthlessness/uselessness/etc. by those around her, and the consequences that result. ★★★★☆.

It's not fantastic when I end up enjoying the hallucinations a lot more than the humans. Everybody feels in some way to either be clueless or painfully self absorbed. The ending is also rushed; I was so close to the end and there were still way too many unanswered questions.
