The Rum Diary
The Rum Diary: Film Tie-in Edition | Hunter S. Thompson
Paul Kemp has moved from New York to the steamy heat of Puerto Rico to work at the Daily News. He starts hanging out at Al's Backyard, a local den selling booze and hamburgers to vagrant journalists who are mostly crazy drunks on the verge of quitting. Then he meets Yeamon, whose delectable girlfriend has Kemp stewing in his own lust. But the idle tension that builds up in places where men sweat twenty-four hours a day is reaching a violent breaking point.

Bailedbailed

I didn't *hate* it, but I have very little patience for people sitting around drinking all day while hating on life. Since I just got my hands on the new Elin Hilderbrand there's no need to continue reading it.

Pickpick

My first novel by Hunter S. Thompson and I really liked it. The story of debauchery and ineptitude at a low rate newspaper agency in the early days of Puerto Rico‘s statehood. Lots of boozing and lounging until a violent act throws this story into something unexpected. #ReadingTheAmericas23 #PuertoRico #USVirginIslands

Magpiegem I love his writing, it can take me right to that moment in time. 2y
Cinfhen 💯 @Magpiegem I really got a STRONG sense of time & place 2y
Librarybelle So glad you liked this! 2y
TheAromaofBooks My husband loves Hunter S. Thompson. We've listened to a few of his books on audio while traveling. He's so unafraid to use the knife of mockery wherever he sees fit! 2y
Cinfhen I‘m only familiar with two titles from Thompson @TheAromaofBooks I‘ll have to check out his back list 🤩 2y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, and some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Panpan

Thompson was 22 when he wrote this but couldn't get it published until he tried again nearly 40 years later in 1998. The sentences aren't bad, but they are put to poor use. The MC gets a job with the only English-language paper in Puerto Rico, and befriends two other talented yet underappreciated young journalists with violent tendencies. They are bonded by their contempt for the paper, Puerto Rico, and other people. Sexist, racist, and angry 👎

saresmoore Eww. 5y
batsy Ugh. On the bright side, I love a great pan like this one 😁 5y
Billypar @batsy Thanks! I won't lie, as I was finishing it, I was looking forward to writing the pan 🙄 5y

I enjoyed this 7 or 8 years ago when I first read it. Bit the second read through is much better.

In love with this one so far, despite some of the criticism it gets as being a young Thompson work lacking the Gonzo finesse.

Oh, what I wouldn't give to have Hunter S. Thompson alive and writing today, giving Trump the same hell he gave Nixon.

britt_brooke My god, that would be amazing. 8y

"I was not proud of what I had learned but I never doubted it was worth knowing."

Rum. Lots of rum. And few hamburgers. Some debauchery. A little journalism. I liked it.

This semi-autobiographical novel was the second book Thompson penned yet was not published until 1998, presumably for financial reasons.

vivastory Have you seen the movie with Johnny Depp? 8y
britt_brooke @vivastory No, but now I really want to. Is it any good? 8y
vivastory @britt_brooke it's worth watching. Not as good as "Fear & Loathing" but to be fair 1) "Fear & Loathing" is directed by Terry Gilliam 2) they're completely different books. I don't recall if I mentioned this, but "Where the Buffalo Roam" is also good. Features Bill Murray as HST 8y
britt_brooke @vivastory I've read and seen Fear and Loathing. 👍🏻 I'll have to check out Where the Buffalo Roam, thanks! 8y

No matter how much I wanted all those things that I needed money to buy, there was some devilish current pushing me off in another direction -- toward anarchy and poverty and craziness. That maddening delusion that a man can lead a decent life without hiring himself out as a Judas Goat.

The kind of book you don't realize you love until you find yourself missing it for months after completion.
