My first novel by Hunter S. Thompson and I really liked it. The story of debauchery and ineptitude at a low rate newspaper agency in the early days of Puerto Rico‘s statehood. Lots of boozing and lounging until a violent act throws this story into something unexpected. #ReadingTheAmericas23 #PuertoRico #USVirginIslands

Thompson was 22 when he wrote this but couldn't get it published until he tried again nearly 40 years later in 1998. The sentences aren't bad, but they are put to poor use. The MC gets a job with the only English-language paper in Puerto Rico, and befriends two other talented yet underappreciated young journalists with violent tendencies. They are bonded by their contempt for the paper, Puerto Rico, and other people. Sexist, racist, and angry 👎

I enjoyed this 7 or 8 years ago when I first read it. Bit the second read through is much better.

My quest through the Gonzo works has brought me to Puerto Rico 1958.

In love with this one so far, despite some of the criticism it gets as being a young Thompson work lacking the Gonzo finesse.

Oh, what I wouldn't give to have Hunter S. Thompson alive and writing today, giving Trump the same hell he gave Nixon.

Then I ventured into the day, and plunged headlong into an orgy of murder and shrieking and breaking of glass.

"I was not proud of what I had learned but I never doubted it was worth knowing."

Rum. Lots of rum. And few hamburgers. Some debauchery. A little journalism. I liked it.

This semi-autobiographical novel was the second book Thompson penned yet was not published until 1998, presumably for financial reasons.

The kind of book you don't realize you love until you find yourself missing it for months after completion.
