Book Uncle and Me
Book Uncle and Me | Uma Krishnaswami
Every day, nine-year-old Yasmin borrows a book from Book Uncle, a retired teacher who has set up a free lending library next to her apartment building. But when the mayor tries to shut down the rickety bookstand, Yasmin has to take her nose out of her book and do something. But what can she do? The local elections are coming up but shes just a kid. She cant even vote! Still, Yasmin has friends -- her best friend, Reeni, and Anil, who even has a black belt in karate. And she has grownup family and neighbors who, no matter how preoccupied they are, care about what goes on in their community. Then Yasmin remembers a story that Book Uncle selected for her. Its an old folktale about a flock of doves trapped in a hunters net. The birds realize that if they all flap their wings at the same time, they can lift the net and fly to safety, where they seek the help of a friendly mole who chews a hole in the net and sets them free. And so the children get to work, launching a campaign to make sure the voices of the community are heard. An energetic, funny and quirky story that explores the themes of community activism, friendship, and the love of books.

Mini #libraryhaul for #MiddleGradeMarch
Both these books are also my #BlameItonLitsy choices 😊😊
Ali Benjamin's 'The Thing about jellyfish' is at the bottom of pile (unseen) and I have already borrowed 'Extraordinary Birds' by Sandy Stark-McGinnis.

Let's try finish these (along with all the other reads! 😅) before I pick more from my list of #MGLit

Set in India, this book teaches about leadership, speaking up, and a touch on how a political system works. I learned about the ghatam drum shown above and listened to the ghatam played on YouTube while I read.

Sweet bookish story! Civics lessons can feel forced but the setting and perspective worked for me here. Did anyone else do the 'read a book a day' thing as a kid? I totally did.

This is a delightful easy chapter book about Yasmin, who borrows one book every day from Book Uncle's Lending Library. When the city says that Book Uncle must get a permit which he can't afford, Yasmin and her friends embark on a letter-writing and word-of-mouth campaign to get one of the candidates in the upcoming mayoral election to promise to help Book Uncle. Great story about friendship, community, politics, and the love of books.

The political process done right for the younger set with seriously adorable illustrations. Also, all the talk of Indian food is making me hungry. What a fun way to start #ReadingGoals2017. #ownvoices

Yasmin, growing up in a Tamil family in urban India, is 9 and she's been reading a book a day for over 400 days. If the uneven sidewalks were fixed, she would walk and read at the same time. She gets her books free from a street book cart library, but its existence is threatened. Bring on the grassroots activism! And how to remind politicians to follow through on promises. Adorable early chapter book for ages 7-10 that adults can also enjoy. ❤️
