I so love these books. Bob Burgess is such a wonderful man and it was lovely to go back to this earlier Strout book to learn more about his life, and that of his two siblings.
Not sure exactly what it is about Strout‘s tales of small-town Maine that makes me feel nostalgic, comforted and happy. Certainly the lives she depicts are not always that comfortable as many are quite lonely and struggling. But I love them.
I am so glad I‘m reading this before reading her new novel. I love it and now I am going to have to read Lucy Barton again and the following Lucy books. I have read “Olive Again”. I did not know they had been mentioned in Lucy Barton. Her characters and family relationships are fascinating. This book is reminding me of “Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant” though so far.
pickI'm not sure how I missed reading this novel, having read all the others. After reading Tell Me Everything, I went back & read this. The characters development is a mark of the author's strong writing and this novel didn't disappoint. The Burgess siblings don't have great relationships & have drifted apart as adults. Yet they are connected to each other through their shared sad childhood, so when Susan's son Zach gets into trouble they reconnect.
pickSlow and steady is the best way to describe this story. A trio of adult siblings from Maine reconnect when one of their kids is charged with a hate crime. Bob is the quiet force that holds them together. I had a hard time getting into it, but once you understand the pace it hits its stride. I loved Bob's character growth throughout the story. It had me thinking about how we surround ourselves with the people we think we deserve.
pickThough primarily about the adult Burgess siblings, there is a strong thread relating to Somali #refugees in Maine. Incredibly moving story that helps our understanding of challenges living in a new unfamiliar & sometimes unfriendly country. My favorite Strout novel. I am a fan of Lucy Barton but this stand-alone novel (although the Burgess boys are playing a role in Lucy‘s novels as well) by Strout is easily just as good. I loved the family dynamics in this book and the always present New England setting.
pickAt times this book was so depressing, but I couldn't stop reading and it was eventually so beautiful. All Elizabeth Strout's books are just wonderful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
pickI sometimes think no one can bring book characters to life like Strout can. She did it again in this fantastic book about two brothers, their sister and their lives. They are far from perfect, yet so incredibly human. And then there‘s Maine, the state they love and hate. And in between all of this there is the #Somali community living there, dealing with prejudices, racism and wondering about those strange Americans.

pickAgain I feel I have read this before however I enjoyed the read. Not as good for me as the Olive Kitteridge books . I had no idea Somalian refugees had been resettled in Maine. That aspect of the story was not that big but it did interest me. Anyone reading this know of this?

pickOther than Lucy Barton, I have LOVED every novel created by Elizabeth Strout!! She writes ordinary people and moments so easily and naturally. I was pulled into this book about three siblings from the very first page. Narration was outstanding 🎧❤️Total hit. I‘m going to try Lucy Barton again... maybe timing was off 😉

pickBook 57 My least favorite Strout novel. Still very well-written and character-rich, The Burgess Boys has fewer characters and a focused storyline--exactly what I craved from her other books. Turns out, the delicate balance and interweaving of unrelated stories and characters is the beauty of Elizabeth Strout's writing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rather different to her usual but still strong on the relationships, the family and the small town.

I had no idea when I offered to lead a bookclub discussion that this book had anything to do with the #history of the Somali refugees in Maine. I wore my T-shirt, purchased at a musical benefit supporting Bridge Knoxville. Today, our newspaper featured Welcome House Knoxville Director wearing her same shirt. Strout does such a good job creating awareness & compassion. I think our discussion did too. #RedRoseSeptember @Cinfhen @arlenefinnigan
so-soA story about the damaged lives led by two men who survived an accident which killed their father and for which one of them was responsible. Their personal damage spills over onto others, damaging them. I think the author‘s intention was to write a hopeful book, but I‘m not sure she succeeded.
Two brothers who fled their hometown and a tragic past to live in NYC, must now #cometogether and return to their home due to a family crisis that involved a hate crime allegedly committed by their nephew.

pickMan muss dem (Hör-)Buch echt eine Chance geben und sich etwa 1,5 Stunden an das gemächliche Tempo gewöhnen. Wenn man das schafft und auch die arrogante Helen und dem überheblichen Jim erträgt, wird man vor allem in den letzten 3 Stunden belohnt.
Der deutsche Titel passt perfekt zum Inhalt. Wenn man Alltagsgeschichten mag, sollte man eine Versuch wagen. Wenn nicht, wird man schnell finden, dass es keine Handlung gibt.
Ich mochte es schlussendlich.
Soviel dazu, dass ich mir vorgestern vorfreudig ein frisches Hörbuch heruntergeladen habe, weil mein aktuelles ja „bald“ zu Ende ist. ?
Fazit: Wer genau guckt, ist klar im Vorteil. ? Immer.
Das Pingpong zwischen Jim und Bobby bin ich inzwischen gewöhnt. Jim wird mir zwar wohl nie richtig sympathisch werden, aber ich find‘s gut, dass Bobby wenigstens versucht, ihn zu konfrontieren (etwa Stunde 3:40). Bobby ist irgendwie sowieso der heimliche Protagonist.
Aber mal ernsthaft, Susan, die es nicht hinbekommt und es noch nicht einmal versucht, wichtige bzw. sachdienliche Informationen aus ihrem 19-jährigen Sohn herauszubekommen⁉️ Warum❓?
Das Buch ist nicht so schlecht – weniger jedenfalls als ich nach den ersten weniger als 50 Seiten gedacht hatte.
Der Erzählton ist passend (Katja Riemann‼️). Die Geschichte kommt mir vor wie eine Mischung aus „Sommer vorm Balkon“ und „Ulysses“. Sowas mag ich ja, Geschichten die das „kleine Alltagsleben“ abmelden. Trotzdem fehlt mir hier irgendwas. Ein bisschen fad kommt das alles daher.
Ich mag im übrigen sehr, wie Katja Riemann liest.
Das führt wirklich dazu, dass _ich_ mit den Figuren besser klarkommen, und sie für mich auch deutlicher getrennt, unterscheidbarer sind als sie es waren, als ich das Buch gelesen habe.
Ich hatte ja gesagt, dass das Buch als Hörbuch noch eine Chance bekommt. Und ja, das ist eines der Bücher, in die ich in vorgelesener Form besser hinein finde. ??♀️
Das Vokabular ist zwar immer noch das gleiche, aber eine der Figuren verteilt bei etwa Stunde 1:32 dafür jeweils eine Rüge.
Auch wenn wir nicht ganz klar ist, warum das nicht in der Situation noch erfolgt, erkenne ich an, das „Spasti“ und „Neger“ doch gerade gerückt werden.
Ach so, der Kommentar des Mannes meines Vertrauens zu Mrs. Strout und ihrer Verwendung von „Spasti“ und „Neger“ war übrigens: „Wer hat das denn übersetzt? ?“
Fand ich eine gute Frage.
Außerdem bin ich gerade schwach geworden, nachdem ich – wirklich zufällig – gesehen habe, dass meine Leihbücherei es auch als Hörbuch hat. Vielleicht ist das ja besser texturiert. Es bekommt noch eine Chance. ??♀️ Ein neues Hörbuch brauchte ich ohnehin.

»Ist das einer?«
»Ist das eine! Du redest wie so ein Spastiker. Du bist doch der New Yorker – hast du noch nie einen Neger gesehen?« (Seite 42)

Von einem Buch, in dem allen ernstes unkommentiert „Achtung, Spasti“ vorkommt, will ich eigentlich nicht viel mehr lesen. 😡
Vielleicht auch, weil ich bisher nicht so richtig warm damit werde, aber ich versuche, ihm noch bis Seite 100 zuzugestehen.
Der Prolog ist irgendwie ein bisschen verwirrend.
Dass eine erwachsene Tochter so oft mit ihrer Mutter über die Kinder aus (wahrscheinlich) der Nachbarschaft redet beziehungsweise klatscht beziehungsweise tratscht, finde ich schon befremdlich.
Im Seniorenalter soll das ja üblich sein, aber diese dauernde Lästerei über Nachbarn aus Kindertagen – ich weiß nicht.
Das Gute ist, dass ich jetzt noch vier ganze Tage habe, um Elisabeth Strouts „Das Leben, natürlich“ zu lesen. ??
Wobei „am meisten gefreut“ in Verbindung mit Büchern doch unpassend ist, finde ich.
Das hier war ein Zufallsfund, über den ich mich auch sehr freue, weil ich auf ihn gestoßen bin als ich „Die Unvollkommenheit der Liebe“ gesucht habe, das auf meinem Litsy-SuB liegt. ?

pickStrout is up there as one of my favourite contemporary American writers. And I did like this book -- just not as much as I liked (loved) Olive Kitteridge, Lucy Barton, and Amy & Isabelle. Not sure if Strout is better at writing female characters or I just prefer reading about them?
It is the Mainest of her Maine novels, really digging into what it means to be from there or move there, what it means to stay or leave.
pickAny book that's good enough to keep me company on a run is a win! This definitely made me want to pick up another Elizabeth Strout...but do I go back to Olive Kitteridge or forward to My Name is Lucy Barton? Help!
