I am a day late, but, this is one of my favorite books. Happy Hanukkah!
Caldecott Honor
This book is the story of Hershel outsmarting Goblins in an attempt to save Hanukkah for his village.
This book is a great way to introduce students to Jewish traditions like latkes, dreidels, and the importance of lighting the menorah on Hanukkah.
“In every window there stood a menorah with nine gleaming candles to light the way.”
Caldecott Honor 1990
Review:
This book has great illustrations and a lot of text. The story helps explain the story of Hannakuh while being entertaining with decepting goblins that are stopping hannakuh in a small town. With the illustrations and sly text I think its a great read.
Blurb:
This would be good for 3-6. It explains Hannakuh and would be a good book to read during holidays.

Look at this little thing, isn‘t it cute? I first saw this book at Barnes & Noble and fell in love with the art. I enjoy the old Jewish tales. This one is about a man who has quite the time when all he wants to do is just celebrate Hanukkah in peace! Next time you light a menorah, you‘ll certainly think of him.
Happy Holidays and Merry Everything! 🎄🍄🕯✡️🕎
One of my #HolidayTraditions is reading this, but apparently I‘ve been reading it to my students for the past few years cause I didn‘t realize my local library system doesn‘t have a copy. It sort of shocked me since I think of this as a classic. I‘m teaching online this year & couldn‘t grab it from the school library, so I ended up listening to a YouTube read aloud. It was actually cool to hear a full audio version with howling wind & everything.

The power of teachers. In the 5th grade I had an amazing teacher who completely expanded our minds. Her name was Mrs KD (Kirk Devolt).
When I think of goblins I immediately think of this book and the lessons she taught us around this book, as someone with a terrible memory it is incredible how vivid that lesson sticks with me to this day.
Will Hershel be able to save Hanukkah by vanquishing the goblins? Originally published in Cricket Magazine, this is a fun tale of a traveler using his wiles to trick the goblins. The illustrations are wonderful, with a good mix of cute and creepy in the depictions of the goblins. Hanukkah traditions, such as latkes, dreidels, and lighting the menorah, are introduced. #wintergames #TeamFozziwig #holidayread #BBRC #AtoZ
..my fave Hanukkah book!! #giveawayholidays @Liberty
This says a lot about my threshold for scares, since I'm picking a picture book that I first read as a child. :p. Still freaks me out, too, Hershel trapped with all of those angry goblins, and having to figure out how to outwit them on the spot! I'd probably still freeze under that sort of pressure. :p. The character is based off of an older depiction out of Yiddish folklore. Reading gets geekier as you peel back deeper layers! #FunFridayPhoto
