Boetema suddenly develops the ability to astrally project to other worlds, unintentionally possessing the bodies of people light years away. Inotu, her inquisitive brother with a pension for trouble, finds himself on the run after he's caught eavesdropping on an illegal business deal between small town business tycoons and their cyborg bodyguard. When Boetema accidentally gets someone hurt while in another girl's body, the siblings are forced to work together to solve the problems they've created on their planet and others. AFAR is a coming-of age fantasy tale about two siblings. Boetema can astrally project, and her brother, Inotu, is forced to grow up when their reckless parents leave to work as salt shepherds. Boetema is tasked with figuring out why she dreams she's in other people's bodies, and in doing so, makes matters worse on a planet hundreds of light years away. Inotu struggles to become a confident and supportive brother while they've been left alone by their parents. Poor, sleep-deprived, and on the run from a cyborg, the siblings work together to overcome their own personal obstacles, making their way across the desert to the thriving metropolis, Yopan.

I enjoyed this comic. The art is beautiful, and the characters and premise are interesting. I love Boetema's world-jumping spirit travel ability. Overall, I wanted something more from this book. It feels incomplete.

The story is interesting, but is very hard to follow. Everything comes together in the end, however the story is constantly jumping from one point to another. It‘s a one off not a series, and I think it would have done better as a series. Somethings are so drawn out the are not easy to understand, and others so very short that I wish the authors had taken more time to explore.

The concept of this graphic novel is way out there. This girl and her brother are fending for themselves bc their parents had to leave to make money elsewhere. And the girl starts having dreams where she is inside an alien's body! Different aliens and different planets every dream. The story picks up from there. Very interesting and different art style. Hoping for a sequel soon!

This was cute. It took me a bit to get in to but I really enjoyed the later half.

4/5⭐ I loved the beginning. I want SO MUCH MORE of the worlds Boetema travels to. Afar really needs to be a series to truly explore everything introduced here: the worlds, the family relationship, the whole thing with Abrinet and Gorges, etc. The conclusion felt shoehorned at the end because they needed to wrap it up within one volume. But it's definitely worth a read. #blackathon

The art in Afar is amazing and beautiful. I liked the story but it seemed a little rushed and/or under developed in places. Some of the conversation was awkward. The other world travel was fun and interesting but at times very short. The main character, Boetema (my favorite) seems to be one of the only characters with critical thinking skills.

The cover of this comic is amazing and the premise sounded quite interesting but it is way too brief and surface level. The relationship between Boetema and her brother Inotu is the shining point but the plot and the astral projection elements are not developed at all.

Leila del Duca is predominantly an artist but I think she has potential as a writer if she focuses her attention on developing story rather than just having an interesting concept.

Started off this rainy Sunday at a library book sale and now I'm snuggled up on the couch with a nice little fire going, enjoying one of my finds. I did not have a lot of luck at this sale (I rarely do because my tastes are not in line with most people in East TN) but I picked up another addition to my suddenly growing #Afrofuturism collection! Also, YAY for diverse comic books!

The art is this is SO gorgeous and while I loved the astral projection plot line, the one on Bo's home planet was lackluster with weird pacing, bumping this down to a so-so.

RealBooks4ever Aww shucks! The art is eye-catching! 😔 6y
night_shift @RealBooks4ever I know. It was a little bit of a letdown, which sucks. Not deterring you though. It's worth a library borrow for looks alone. 6y
Gezemice I had a similar experience. So gorgeous, especially the cover, but the story is a huge letdown, and I did not like the writing, either. 6y

night_shift @Gezemice I think maybe if they stretched it out a little more that would've helped. It seemed like things happened awfully quick and jumpy. Weird. And the way people talked was stilted in a lot of panels. Just, strange. 6y
Gezemice @UnidragonFrag I don't know if that would have helped. The dialogue was so cliché sometimes it hurt. The kids story seemed just odd - abandoned by both parents? - and their reactions immature. And the story on the other planet... what was that? I think we have a case of good artist paired with bad writer. 6y
night_shift @Gezemice that's true about the dialogue. Really unrealistic. The thing with their parents was weird. Like, really? The back made me think their parents are gone at the start already and they're having to fend for themselves, which sounds compelling, but it turns out their parents are just dumb? Like, I dunno. I liked the idea of her visiting other planets in her dreams. That was pretty cool. 6y

The cover is gorgeous. Many of the character designs are gorgeous. Unfortunately that's where the positives stop. The writing is cliché-ridden, fourth-grade max, the characters are whiny and illogical, and no, combining two lame stories does not make one good one.

Texreader Oh those eyes! What lovely artwork! Too bad the story didn't live up to that beauty. 7y
Gezemice @Texreader Yeah, I was excited to read it... 🙁 7y

Just finished reading this fantastic new graphic novel. It's about a girl who travels to other planets while she sleeps. In her waking hours she and her brother (and their pet/friend Monkey) struggle to make a living after their parents leave them. Love the characters, story, world, and illustrations. I hope that we get to see more from this world. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I chiseled away at Mt. Review Copy this weekend. Of course I then downloaded a bunch more. 😜

This gorgeous graphic novel about a girl who travels to other planets in her sleep is so intriguing! The world-building is just fabulous. I really hope there's a sequel.

Out this week. Pick it up!

Beautiful art in this graphic novel! The MC inhabits other creatures on other planets when she sleeps! She's got a strong relationship with her brother; their parents are pretty irresponsible and out of the picture. I'm assuming the start of a series. LOVED all the alien planets and creatures!

Daisydo That is lovely. 7y
