Witches: The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem | Rosalyn Schanzer
32 posts | 17 read | 9 to read
Tackling the same twisted subject as Stacy Schiff's much-lauded book The Witches: Salem, 1692, this Sibert Honor book for young readers features unique scratchboard illustrations, chilling primary source material, and powerful narrative to tell the true tale. In the little colonial town of Salem Village, Massachusetts, two girls began to twitch, mumble, and contort their bodies into strange shapes. The doctor tried every remedy, but nothing cured the young Puritans. He grimly announced the dire diagnosis: the girls were bewitched! And then the accusations began. The riveting, true story of the victims, accused witches, crooked officials, and mass hysteria that turned a mysterious illness affecting two children into a witch hunt that took over a dozen peoples lives and ruined hundreds more unfolds in chilling, novelistic detailcomplete with stylized black-white-and-red scratchboard illustrations of young girls having wild fits in the courtroom, witches flying overhead, and the Devil and his servants terrorizing the Puritans in this young adult book by award-winning author and illustrator Rosalyn Schanzer. Taught in middle and high schools around the U.S., the 17th-century saga remains hauntingly resonant as people struggle even today with the urgent need to find someone to blame for their misfortunes. Witches! has been honored with many prestigious awards, including:. Robert F. This book would be better for 3rd and 4th graders because its a harder topic to understand. This is more of a complex topic for younger students to read. I would definitely recommend older classes to read this story.

Pickpick

This nonfiction book is good in the fact that its facts are accurate and generalized based on them. Its purpose its told through story telling, making it more interesting to kids. This book does have some difficulty and should be intended for an older audience but has lots of pictures to describe/clarify what might be going on through the text!

blurb

This book was interesting and had lots of vivid pictures to look at. I think the reading level would be for more older kids and that something like this would be well suited for children interested in things like history!

There were a lot of things I learned from this book like three dogs were also killed in the Salem Witch Trials 😢.
I also did not know that Elizabeth Proctor lost everything after John‘s death because a forged will cut her out. The court refused to hear her case because she had been charged with witchcraft and was dead to the law.

This small book with black etchings was packed with facts about the Salem Witch trials.

I hadn‘t realized how much my understanding of the Salem Trails over the years had been colored by my many readings of “The Crucible.” This was a great informative read. I especially liked the entires at the end about what happened to everyone after the trials. However, the blatant greed and lack of justice is hard to take. #NFNov

I like that it says "absolutely true story..." in the title because it is so wild you need to specify it actually happened.

The Salem witch trials are an incredibly interesting nonfiction topic for kids to read about. It is odd to think about something like this actually happening today, but it demonstrates to kids what people believe and how different life and people were back then.

Reading Schanzer‘s account of the Salem Witch Trials, it‘s hard to believe the events are true, that they actually happened. But, they did. This readable & absolutely fascinating account of the trials, with illustrations by the author, is a great book for young readers interested in learning more about the trials, the accused & accusers, the innocent, the possible reasons behind it all & what happened afterward to everyone involved. A great read!

Found this in a small independent book store, all hail the small bookstore. Despite its small size, it's packed with a lot of historical content.

Jazzper2 It's great! I'm hoping it will help when I attempt to read "The Witches," again. 7y
