Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence
Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence | Gavin De Becker
True fear is a gift.Unwarranted fear is a curse.Learn how to tell the difference. A date won't take "no" for an answer. The new nanny gives a mother an uneasy feeling. A stranger in a deserted parking lot offers unsolicited help. The threat of violence surrounds us every day. But we "can" protect ourselves, by learning to trust and act on our gut instincts. In this empowering book, Gavin de Becker, the man Oprah Winfrey calls the nation's leading expert on violent behavior, shows you how to spot even subtle signs of danger before it's too late. Shattering the myth that most violent acts are unpredictable, de Becker, whose clients include top Hollywood stars and government agencies, offers specific ways to protect yourself and those you love, including...how to act when approached by a stranger...when you should fear someone close to you...what to do if you are being stalked...how to uncover the source of anonymous threats or phone calls...the biggest mistake you can make with a threatening person...and more. Learn to spot the danger signals others miss. It might just save your life."

Has this ever happened to you? Your significant other orders a book and you have to immediately cancel the order because said book is already part of your collection? Oh, yeah, and you also know EXACTLY where the book is located within your vast color coded filing system and you walk right to it! Note to spouse: never order a book without checking my collection first! 🤣

KathyWheeler I, myself, have bought books that I already own! 😄. It doesn‘t happen so often now since I got LibraryThing and cataloged all my books. (edited) 2y

I would definitely be interested in an updated edition of this book. This was written in the 90s and it would be great to hear things about the current digital world. Overall it was a great book about harnessing your fear to help protect you.

Today‘s card is: Seven if Diamonds; EFFORT

“Archery was a proper pastime for ladies and gentlemen, who often became quite good when they invest their time”

This book discusses honing your instincts to better understand dangerous situations. It makes me think about the work that goes in to honing those skills.

What does this make you think of? Comment below!

I enjoyed this book a LOT. It‘s crazy to think about the power we give to the wrong things. This isn‘t a self-help book by any means, but it‘s a plain-talking book about something we should all be aware of. If there was one book that I could make every woman in the world read, it would be this one. "Intuition is knowing without knowing why." This book was incredibly instructive, important, and serious. It discusses how to tune in to our instincts and fear to protect ourselves. From stalkers to strangers to boyfriends, handymen, and partners, it discusses how to listen to your intuition—your fear—and follow it to save your life.

Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Looks interesting. 📚 add for me 🙏🏻 4y
Kempii The book‘s lessons apply to men as well, but with women sadly making up the greater majority of victims of violence and harassment, I find it particularly relevant for women. 4y

Worry is the fear we manufacture—it is not authentic. If you choose to worry about something, have at it, but do so knowing it‘s a choice 🪓🧨🔥🔫

Not the traditional #selfhelpbook and I‘ve rec‘d this before, but it doesn‘t hurt to repeat. This book helps you hone your survival instincts - helping you tell the difference between those signals and unnecessary worry. Also provides tips for how to read people/know when they‘re trying to manipulate you. A must read

So I‘ve been following the case of the missing girl in Iowa, and thought it might be a good idea to learn more about staying safe in this cruel world. 🙏🏼 she is found soon.

Coincidentally, finished this book this week. This book was ridiculously good, written in 1997 before the Columbine shooting is still relevant and informative.

Everyone should read this…or at least all women. It helps you to understand the subconscious signs you receive and how to listen to your intuition. Even more by giving you the tools to know your body will give you signals when you're truly in danger, it will help lessen anxiety/worry you may feel. #192019challenge #192019

When an author you read yrs ago pops up in your current read & makes you think I really should re-read that now! Perfect timing for #Recommendsday

A lot about trusting your instincts, and how to listen to your inner voice better.... and to think I read this back in '97 or '98, years before Columbine or 9/11, the anthrax scares or any of the mass shootings/terrorist scares of our current times. Definitely a recommend & time for a re-read.
