A stunning epic fantasy in the tradition of David Eddings, Janny Wurts and Robert Jordan. A thousand years ago the Acharites drove the Forbidden from their land. Now strange sightings along Achar's northern border foreshadow their return. the barbaric tribes of the Ravensbund are pouring south with tales of fearsome beings who feed on the terror of their prey. Winter has come early, and with it the promise of war. Axis, bastard son of the dead Princess Rivkah, is sent to the battlefront of Gorkenfort with his elite Axe-Wielders. Once there, he must hand over command to his hated half-brother, Borneheld. But travelling north, Axis falls in love with Faraday - Borneheld's bethrothed - and meets two priests who challenge the very essence of his beliefs. the Sentinels walk the land, the treeFriend has been found, and the people of the Plough, the Wing and the Horn must set aside their differences and unite under one leader against the evil rising in the North... 'Douglass has the breadth of vision necessary to create sweeping epics and the storyteller's gift that makes readers love her.' - Locus the Axis trilogy Book 1. Absolutely loved this book (and series). I read it in middle school, and read the paperback so many times that the front cover actually fell off. I recently got the hardback version within the last year (to replace the paperback), and have reread it again. It‘s still one of my favorites, and is one of the books that sparked my interest in writing.

I‘m hoping to make this my last day with BATTLEAXE. It‘s an odd mix; I like it because it‘s reminded me of all the stuff epic fantasy does well (epic sweep! Characters you get to know across hundreds of pages!), but it‘s also brought home the stuff that makes the genre a harder sell for me these days (rampant pseudo-medievalism and a tendency to take the obvious route). I AM enjoying it, but I‘m not heartbroken I don‘t have the next book on hand.

BkClubCare Is that a piece of …. Pie?! 2y

My favourite girl‘s helping me read my first truly big Sara Douglass novel. I‘m 235 pages in and I can‘t say I‘m hooked yet, but it does feel like one of those fantasies that builds well across the whole series. I mostly like it.

Graywacke I love your pups. She looks so happy in the sun. 2y
xicanti @Graywacke she‘s always so glad to get outside. 2y
GirlNamedJesse Oh my goodness I love Sara Douglass! That entire series is one of my all-time favorites! 💜 2y
xicanti @GirlNamedJesse I‘m looking forward to really sinking into it! 2y

#WyrdAndWonder day 11: weapon of choice

I‘m going slightly left field for today‘s prompt with a book named for a weapon that has been on my TBR for far too long (I‘ll get to it, I swear. One day) - Battleaxe by Aussie author Sara Douglass

This is my current read which has been on my shelves for ages. It took a good 100 pages to get into as the style is different from what I've read in a while, but I'm really enjoying now.
Also discovered Sara Douglass is an Aussie author and is from Adelaide where I live which you don't come across very often.

Has anyone read this series?

#fantasy #aussieauthor

Soubhiville Not that series but I read several from her Wayfairer Redemption series. 4y
LazyOwl @Soubhiville I don't have that series. If I enjoy this series I may get my hands on that one as well. 3y

This is my favorite series.. The journey ait takes doesn't feel like a possibly fit in the book.. Sara Douglas has a magical way of just telling a story that's in my opinion amazing

1. I'm too lazy to get up so it's a screenshot of the book sleeve I made and posted on Litsy
2. I started this trilogy a couple years ago but bailed, I do plan on reading it again and finishing it someday
3. I had mushroom and black Olive pizza and cheesy garlic bread with my mil, nephew and niece
4. #TeamKillAmbrose #litsyfamily #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy #turtlesoflitsy

This is book one of my favourite fantasy series ever - it gave me all the feels... Okay well it gave me all the feels of rage but despite that I flew through all 6 books in a week. I'm fairly certain there were #mountains in the book but even if there weren't there are #mountains on the cover so I'm good.

Day 8 #readingwomenmonth - Australian authors. Whew super busy day here but I still have like 10 minutes left on the 8th so I haven't broken my #readingwomenmonth streak! These doorstopper fantasies have been on my tbr for years. I've been told several times that Douglass is great and I have to read them. I will get to them... eventually...

llwheeler Hah just noticed my two Jaclyn Moriarty books are in the back of this pic. Also an Australian author! 7y

Okay, first of all, these have some of the worst covers I've ever seen. Secondly, it contains some incredibly #unconvincingcouples. Insta-love is one of my biggest literary pet peeves. #booklove17

Very slow moving for me. Trying to continue reading it but have taken a break. The characters are interesting which wants me to continue reading not give up on the book.
