The Stephen King Companion
The Stephen King Companion: Four Decades of Fear from the Master of Horror | George Beahm
17 posts | 4 read | 26 to read
The Stephen King Companion is an authoritative look at horror author King's personal life and professional career, from Carrie to The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. King expert George Beahm, who has published extensively about Maine's main author, is your seasoned guide to the imaginative world of Stephen King, covering his varied and prodigious output: juvenalia, short fiction, limited edition books, bestselling novels, and film adaptations. The book is also profusely illustrated with nearly 200 photos, color illustrations by celebrated "Dark Tower" artist Michael Whelan, and black-and-white drawings by Maine artist Glenn Chadbourne. Supplemented with interviews with friends, colleagues, and mentors who knew King well, this book looks at his formative years in Durham, when he began writing fiction as a young teen, his college years in the turbulent sixties, his struggles with early poverty, working full-time as an English teacher while writing part-time, the long road to the publication of his first novel, Carrie, and the dozens of bestselling books and major screen adaptations that followed. For fans old and new, The Stephen King Companion is a comprehensive look at America's best-loved bogeyman.

Z is for Zombies
Frank Darabont adapted Robert Kirkman's graphic novel into a surprise hit show & a cultural phenomenon. Darabont's career started with multiple adaptations of King's work (Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile & Mist). It is hard to imagine Darabont being able to convince AMC to take a risk on a zombie program without his success with King's works. Another example of King's pervasive influence.

vivastory A big thanks to a wonderful host @GarthRanzz & my fellow constant readers. It's been a blast! 6y
GarthRanzz I actually feel like TWD got worse after he left too. I have to admit that for being a big fan of the comic I have yet to watch the last three seasons. Thank you Scott! And everyone!! 6y

X is for Xerox
I loved this Atlantic article about a bookstore clerk who figured out that Richard Bachman was King's pseudonym. With the help of a Xerox machine!
The name of the article is "Before JK Rowling was Robert Galbraith, Stephen King was Richard Bachman" & it's definitely worth reading the full article.

@GarthRanzz

GarthRanzz Now that‘s what I call thinking outside the box! And a great article Scott! It did take a lot more work back in the day. I still remember the days of digging through card catalogs doubtfully research when I was a young reporter. 6y
vivastory @GarthRanzz There were a lot of really interesting passages in the article. I liked that King was happy that it was a fan & not a reporter or academic who had figured out he was Bachman 6y
ValerieAndBooks How did the xerox machine help? Do you have a link to the article? 6y
vivastory @ValerieAndBooks I tried linking it in my post, but for some reason it linked to a different Atlantic article. If you Google Stephen King Xerox, the article should be one of the first results 6y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory found it! Thanks. Good article. Reminds me of when I recently read All the President‘s Men and was struck by the constant mentioning of phone calls Woodward and Bernstein made or received. From the office or pay phones 😊. @GarthRanzz 6y

• Day 22 of #KingAtoZ with my first non-book entry. Today is the letter V for “Virtuoso,” a word that describes King perfectly •

GarthRanzz And that it does! Very nice choice! 6y

V is for VHS
The early & mid 90s produced several made for tv adaptations of King's work (Langoliers, Sometimes They Come Back & Tommyknockers). A few were major tv events, I have vivid memories of the excitement for the nearly weeklong adaptation of The Stand. Just like any well-prepared fan in the pre-dvd era, I always made sure I had a stack of blank VHS tapes to record these adaptations to rewatch later.

@GarthRanzz

GarthRanzz I remember when The Stand was about to be shown! I‘d waited my whole life for a movie/tv version and my ex scheduled a family trip for that week! It very nearly ended a two year old marriage. Thinking back, I should have chosen King. 😊 (edited) 6y
vivastory @GarthRanzz I can't even imagine! Were you able to find anyone who had recorded it? 6y
GarthRanzz I actually had a friend at work record it for me. First stop I made when we got back home. 6y

GarthRanzz Ever since I‘ve always kept a copy on whatever media is the norm for the time. Currently all the episodes are on my iPad. I watched them on my last business trip. 😊 (edited) 6y
vivastory @GarthRanzz I haven't watched it in years. Will definitely have to do so once I read it. Hopefully the reboot happens. 6y
ApoptyGina69 I still have a few hundred VHS tapes! Always bought a brick of them at (then) Price Club. Thousands of videos from ‘80s MTV, Arsenio episodes, SNL specials, movies, etc! Of course The Stand-major event! Gary & Molly 💖😍 6y
vivastory @ApoptyGina69 That's awesome! I threw away all of my video tapes several years ago, but I definitely wish I still had some. I used to always tape 120 Minutes with Matt Pinfield every Sunday night. Good memories! 6y

Q is for Quarrel
King tweeted, "No clowns for you, Donald. Go float yourself." King has long populated his fiction with snake oil salesmen & conmen, it should be no surprise that he'll take to social media to call out our president for the clown he really is.
#KingAtoZ
@GarthRanzz

GarthRanzz This was so classic King when it happened. At least Uncle Stevie stands up for our rights. 6y

N is for New England
Nearly all of King's novels are set in New England, specifically in Maine. King is a conscious participant of the long, rich & varied tradition of New England writers exploring the unusual, abnormal & inexplicable.

G is for Generous
A blurb from King can really help a debut novelist break out. While a King blurb isn't necessarily rare, they are always sincere & not always restricted to the horror genre.
