The Scribe of Siena
The Scribe of Siena | Melodie Winawer
Equal parts transporting love story and gripping historical conspiracythink The Girl with a Pearl Earring meets Outlanderdebut author Melodie Winawer takes readers deep into medieval Italy, where the past and present blur and a twenty-first century woman will discover a plot to destroy Siena. Accomplished neurosurgeon Beatrice Trovato knows that her deep empathy for her patients is starting to impede her work. So when her beloved brother passes away, she welcomes the unexpected trip to the Tuscan city of Siena to resolve his estate, even as she wrestles with grief. But as she delves deeper into her brothers affairs, she discovers intrigue she never imagineda 700-year-old conspiracy to decimate the city. After uncovering the journal and paintings of Gabriele Accorsi, the fourteenth-century artist at the heart of the plot, Beatrice finds a startling image of her own face and is suddenly transported to the year 1347. She awakens in a Siena unfamiliar to her, one that will soon be hit by the Plague. Yet when Beatrice meets Accorsi, something unexpected happens: she falls in lovenot only with Gabriele, but also with the beauty and cadence of medieval life. As the Plague and the ruthless hands behind its trajectory threaten not only her survival but also Sienas very existence, Beatrice must decide in which century she belongs. The Scribe of Siena is the captivating story of a brilliant womans passionate affair with a time and a place that captures her in an impossibly romantic and dangerous traptesting the strength of fate and the bonds of love.

Beatrice takes over her late brother's research & discovers 1- there may be a sinister reason the Plague hit Siena much harder than surrounding towns & 2- she is strongly drawn to a painter who lived there in the mid 1300s. She (somehow) travels back to that time & finds friendship, a new career, & love, while thwarting crimes committed against her beloved & solving the Plague mystery- though unable to prevent the devastation. #BorrowNotBuy

Neurosurgeon Beatrice, after the loss of her brother, finds herself the owner of a home in Siena. While attempting to honor her brothers work, she immerses herself in his historical research trying to piece together the mystery of why Siena was hit so much harder by the plague. A mystery which will see her cross time to solve. I kind of feel that it could've been stretched out more, maybe a duology? But only because I wanted more of the story.

Eating Marco's pizza with old world pepperoni while reading a book about 14th century Italy seemed oddly appropriate. The wine of choice this evening is from the mountain vineyards of Dew.

Trying to read this now. I am about 100 pages in. I hate the idea of not finishing a book, but I can't be bothered to care about the main character. I honestly like the character and book more before she got to medieval Sienna. So far it reads a bit pedantic, like the author is trying to show off her research. I hope it gets better. 😕

I'm a bit on the fence with this one. The writing was pretty good, but not quite great. The plot was solid overall, but things worked out a bit too nicely most of the time. Also, the protagonist was one of those people who seemed to be able to do everything, from effortlessly learning to be a medieval scribe to delivering babies. I guess I like my heroines a bit flawed. I did enjoy the book and this is an excellent debut, but not quite a pick.

DGRachel I bailed on this one after about 100 pages a week ago. It started off strong, but then just started to drag. 😔 7y
Redwritinghood @DGRachel Agree. This book could have used some more editing. It's like she had all this great stuff she wanted to put in that didn't really advance the story. 7y

The weather turned ridiculously nice, so I had to take my read and get an iced coffee and go outside. It's top-down, convertible weather. This is the car my husbrand and I drive when we want to go out without the kids - sorry guys, it only seats two!

I'm in the homestretch- only about 40 pages to go - but I need a break. We've had a rainy Saturday morning here, but the sun's out now so it's time to stretch the legs a bit. How's everyone else doing?

I started off my #litsypartyofone and #24hourreadathon with an audiobook while finishing up a few things around the house. Now it's time to settle into my comfy reading spot with my snacks and furry reading companion and current read. I had to take this picture quick before he went for my Cheetos. He'd already licked the outside of the bowl right before I snapped this.

I recently started this book and just looked at the author's bio at the back. So, she's a neurosurgeon and a professor, went to 3 Ivy League schools, has multiple degrees, speaks multiple languages, has 3 kids and wrote a book. Superwoman! I feel lazy now.

Bklover And she speaks five languages! 7y

This book got to such a slow start that it couldn't recover for me. There was also a story point with a priest and the main character that had me shaking my head. It was an interesting look at the Black Plague, but it was just okay for me. The breath noises I heard frequently throughout the beginning of the book weren't as noticeable when not listening through my car speaker. Campbell is an excellent narrator.

Wife Beautiful cover! Plague? I may have to try it. ❤️ a good narrator! 7y
LitHousewife @Wife You should. @BethFishReads seems to be enjoying it more than I did. 7y
BethFishReads @Wife actually it ended up being an Outlander wannabe. Only so-so. The breath noises disappeared, but the book itself was hardly worth your time. 7y

LitHousewife That's good! I'm almost finished. I'll be curious about your feelings when you're done. 7y

Here's hoping a historical fiction with a twist audiobook will fix my current audio dry spell. Cassandra Campbell is always a good listen (even though I've noticed her breathing a lot in FB first 30 minutes).

BethFishReads No not breathing noises! 7y
LitHousewife @BethFishReads I know!!! I don't think I've ever had that with a Cassandra Campbell audiobook before. I'm hoping that I'm not cursed. 😂😂😂 7y

It had a slow beginning, but once I got about 30% in, it got good fast, and I just couldn't put it down. I loved all the characters, and the plot, while not the most original, was wonderfully executed. #arc
