Short, beautifully written coming-of-age story set in 1970s Grand Rapids, MI. Although I turned seventeen a decade later & across the country from Elise, I could relate to her thoughts & feelings & the highs & lows of becoming an adult. There's some magical realism worked in-but it doesn't take away from the real moments. Review, recipe (Scrambled Egg Sandwich w/ Sriracha-Garlic Mayo) inspired by the book + GIVEAWAY for a copy on my blog-link👇🏼
Lake Michigan from the Northwestern campus, more or less. You'd be able to see the Chicago skyline if a) it weren't so hazy and b) I hadn't been so lazy and moved to a spot where the trees weren't blocking it. But look, sun!! ☀️#riotgrams #outside
I did eventually make it out of bed on this lazy stormy Saturday-granted it was only as far as the couch but I brushed my hair and put on yoga pants so there's that! 😆 Lunch on the tray is leftover chickpea salad with celery, mustard & dill, water crackers & Ginger Ale because I wanted bubbles. Tucking into this book for a bit because I am reviewing it for a book tour next week. I love the colors and design of the cover. 📚🍽#litsypartyofone
I enjoyed the writing style and flow enough to keep reading and finish the book, but the Romani representation is so full of outdated stereotypes and offensive clichés, it overshadowed everything for me. I kept hoping it would turn around somehow, but the harmful rep persisted to the end. Really disappointed in this one.
This book was making me squirm as non-white/het characters appeared, but I ignored my gut and thought I might be too sensitive. Now I'm halfway through, and there's a Romani character who *embraces* really problematic rep? 😳 I hope this turns around, because the flow and style are otherwise really nice.
A few things that bring me joy: Max hanging out on the chair next to me with his paw on my knee, #bookmail-especially book-mail with a gorgeous cover and that sounds like a great book. (I'm reviewing it for a book tour in Feb so I'll have to let you know!), and a rainy, cool evening with a book on my e-reader (Emma-retelling by Alexander McCall Smith), Litsy, and a big cup of tea (not pictured). ❤️📚What brings you #joy?
