Alice and the Assassin: An Alice Roosevelt Mystery
Alice and the Assassin: An Alice Roosevelt Mystery | R J Koreto
16 posts | 5 read | 41 to read
In 1902 New York, Alice Roosevelt, the bright, passionate, and wildly unconventional daughter of newly sworn-in President Theodore Roosevelt, is placed under the supervision of Secret Service Agent Joseph St. Clair, ex-cowboy and veteran of the Rough Riders. St. Clair quickly learns that half his job is helping Alice roll cigarettes and escorting her to bookies, but matters grow even more difficult when Alice takes it upon herself to investigate a recent political killing--the assassination of former president William McKinley. Concerned for her father's safety, Alice seeks explanations for the many unanswered questions about the avowed anarchist responsible for McKinley's death. In her quest, Alice drags St. Clair from grim Bowery bars to the elegant parlors of New York's ruling class, from the haunts of the Chinese secret societies to the magnificent new University Club, all while embarking on a tentative romance with a family friend, the son of a prominent local household. And while Alice, forced to challenge those who would stop at nothing in their greed for money and power, considers her uncertain future, St. Clair must come to terms with his own past in Alice and the Assassin, the first in R. J. Koreto's riveting new historical mystery series.

I have a fondness for stories set in old New York & I fully appreciate attention to detail and an ability to evoke the opulence and the squalor of the city in the early days of the 20th century and beyond. R.J. Koreto delivers on both levels, moving his characters seamlessly from the splendor of the University Club and the Roosevelt mansion to smoke-filled bars, betting parlors, and dockyards. see my full review at http://itsallaboutthebook.org

Started my #24in48 readathon with this breezy new series from RJ Koreto, which features Alice Roosevelt (daughter of President Theodore R) Alice is 17 here & guarded by Secret Service “cowboy” Joseph St. Clair, investigates the nefarious doings related to the assassination of President McKinley in Buffalo. It‘s a light read, with a provocative lead. Alice is, by turns, charming & so full of privilege you want to slap her. A promising new series.

CarolynM Sounds like my sort of story 6y

Sometimes it seems like all historical mystery protagonists are feisty. It gets a little anachronistic. Surely not all women were feisty and rebellious! But I really enjoyed Alice in the Assassin. I think it was because I know that Alice was a real person and she *was* feisty. She did smoke and visit her bookie and behave in unconventional ways. #historicalmystery #mystery #cozymystery #newyork

Pretty good mystery. Alice Roosevelt certainly makes an interesting character (she is the reason I wanted to read this book), but I found it hard to believe that the 17 year old daughter of the President, along with her Secret Service bodyguard, would be running around New York City investigating very dangerous killers involved in the assassination of President McKinley while telling everyone she interrogated that she was the President's daughter.

Megabooks Kinda weird premise. 7y

Left Super Bowl party after halftime and now doing what I really want to do - reading. This is an ARC of a historical mystery starring Alice Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt's unruly daughter. I like the cover.

I am already becoming proactively disappointed that there is no way that a historical mystery where Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice solves crimes in 1902 New York could possibly be as amazing as I desperately want it to be. Thank you @irregularreader for tipping me off to its expected existence!

irregularreader She looks like such a badass! 7y
MamaGina Sounds intriguing!🤓 7y
Yossarian @irregularreader She was! And she lived until 1980, so she was a badass for a very long time! (edited) 7y

LeahBergen What a stunning portrait. 7y
Yossarian @LeahBergen She was 19 years old. I'm not up on my fashion norms, but it strikes me as a lot of exposed shoulder for 1903. 7y
Haweller Beautiful dress but all I can think is how it would drag through the mud and debris 7y
ValerieAndBooks Reminds me of the mystery series by Elliott Roosevelt that featured his mom Eleanor as sleuth (haven't read). Funny to see Alice as a sleuth here also; as she and cousin Eleanor were kind of rivals IRL! 7y

Finally finished my #LitsyAtoZ 2017 list! (V got cut off, I am reading The Violinist's Thumb!)

Yossarian Wait. Is this really a Book Series based on Teddy Roosevelt's Daughter? Is it as awesome as I want it to be? 7y
irregularreader @Yossarian I'm hoping it's good! I've liked the author's previous books, and with a plot line like that, how can a girl say no? 7y
Yossarian I'm already proactively disappointed, because there is no way it could possibly live up to my expectations. 7y
