Don't Give Up, Don't Give In
Don't Give Up, Don't Give In: Lessons from an Extraordinary Life | Louis Zamperini, David Rensin
9 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
New York Times bestseller More than 100,000 copies in print Completed just two days before Louis Zamperinis death at age ninety-seven, Dont Give Up, Dont Give In shares a lifetime of wisdom, insight, and humor from one of the most incredible American lives of the past century (People). Zamperinis story has touched millions through Laura Hillenbrands biography Unbroken and its blockbuster movie adaptation directed by Angelina Jolie. Now, in his own words, Zamperini reveals with warmth and great charm the essential values and lessons that sustained him throughout his remarkable journey. He was a youthful troublemaker from California who turned his life around to become a 1936 Olympian. Putting aside his track career, he volunteered for the army before Pearl Harbor and was thrust into World War II as a B-24 bombardier. While on a rescue mission, his plane went down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where he survived against all odds, drifting two thousand miles in a small raft for forty-seven days. His struggle was only beginning: Zamperini was captured by the Japanese, and for more than two years he courageously endured torture and psychological abuse in a series of prisoner-of-war camps. He returned home to face more dark hours, but in 1949 Zamperinis life was transformed by a spiritual rebirth that would guide him through the next sixty-five years of his long and happy life. Louis Zamperinis Dont Give Up, Dont Give In is an extraordinary last testament that captures the wisdom of a life lived to the fullest.

It‘s almost Olympics time! The author was an Olympian and much, much more. Here he is competing in the 5000m in 1936, and carrying the Olympic Torch 4 days before his 81st birthday in 1998. If you read the incredible true story of his life,”Unbroken”(and if you haven‘t,I strongly recommend it!),this is what happens after he comes back to the US in his own words. Simply written. Great photographs. An amazing man. My friend was happy to get it back!

A friend knew I loved Laura Hillenbrand‘s 2010 biography “Unbroken”, and brought this book for me to read a few years ago. I think she got tired of asking me, if I had read it yet. So, I am seeing her on Wednesday, and my goal is to finish and return to her! 🤞🏻#nopressure #MtTBR

I hadn‘t been to Dollar Tree in a bit, but motivated by @Jess7 ‘s recent haul, I decided to pop in this morning. My store doesn‘t usually have many books, but I got lucky today.

Anyone read any of these?

LauraBeth Nice! My kid and hubs told me last night that when my bday rolls around, they‘ll let me “buy all of the books I want at Dollar Tree...” They were kidding but secretly I was like, “OK!” 6y
saguarosally I‘ve read another book by Margo Rabb and definitely familiar with Laurie Notaro. 6y
Redy2trvl I look every time I head there. You never know what you will find! 6y

britt_brooke @LauraBeth 😆👏🏻 6y
britt_brooke @saguarosally I‘ve never anything by Notaro, but I think I own another of her books on my kindle. I‘d never heard of Rabb, but Michael Chabon blurbed the front so I took that as a good sign. 😁 (edited) 6y
britt_brooke @Redy2trvl Exactly! I always look but hadn‘t lucked out at my store in a long time. I love a good deal! (edited) 6y

I read Unbroken and thought Louis Zamperini was an amazing man! It tells the true story of his survival after his plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean while on a rescue mission during Worldv War II. He was then taken prisoner by the Japanese. A friend loaned me this follow up book which was completed two days before his death at the age of 97. #tbr #septembowie #heroes

In 1998, when asked by the mayor of Joetsu, Japan, if there was anything good about being in a Japanese prison camp, he answered quickly: "Yes. It prepared me for fifty-five years of married life."

An optimist says the glass is half full. A pessimist says the glass is half empty. A survivalist is practical. He says, "Call it what you want, but just fill the glass." I believe in filling the glass.

Zamperini was an interesting man. However, I don't believe in either positive thinking or God because I'm very much grounded in reality, and this book is chock full of both of those things.

Suet624 Love this review. 7y

Although #LouisZamperini was #unbroken during his 2 years as #POW in Japan, but he was a broken man after returning home. He was constantly haunted by his wartime experiences, especially the daily torment from the #Japanese corporal, nicknamed "The Bird." He resorted to alcohol to help him cope with these #posttraumatic #stress. But he was saved by #JesusChrist and he turned his life around. He was a #remarkable man of #faith. #awesomeread
